Bible
School is always
the
keystone
activity of the
summer in our
parish. This year
VBS will run from
June 20 through
June 24 in the evenings from 6pm
to 9pm.
The theme for VBS is CAVE

children from age 3 through fifth grade .
Volunteers who would like to help out with
VBS must have a certificate of completion
from the course “Protecting God’s
Children”.
On Friday evening, families are invited to
celebrate the week with the children, with
a cook-out, and a performance from the
children during which they display the
many activities they completed during the
week.
VBS uses music, crafts, movies,
sports and snacks to excite the
children in their relationship with
Jesus. The program is open to all
VBS “On the ROAD”
This year’s VBS “On the ROAD”
will travel to St. Gregory’s
parish in Barbourville, KY. Fr.
Anthony is very pleased that
PAX CHRISTI is coming to his
parish.
St. Gregory’s has not held a
VBS for years because they do
not have enough members of
their parish to serve as
volunteers to offer this
program. Also there are few
children in the St. Gregory
parish.
Although the VBS
program that we offer is the
Catholic version, VBS is open
to all children. It has often
been
a
source
of
evangelization
in
the
mountains.
Many new
Catholics in Eastern Kentucky
recall
a
positive
VBS
experience as a child offered
by the local Catholic parish.
St. Gregory’s has a sign out
front of their church, and the
parishioners are contacting
neighbors to invite them to
the VBS experience.
PAX CHRISTI initiated VBS “On
the Eoad” a few years ago as a
way to support the Eastern
Kentucky parishes in their
mission to evangelize the “hills
and the hollers.”
Those who volunteer attest
that they receive more than
they give.
a
FUNDRAISING FEASIBILITY and PLANNING STUDY
PAX CHRISTI recently entered into
an agreement with Walsh &
Associates
to
complete
a
Fundraising Feasibility Study and
Planning Study to ascertain our
ability
to
undertake
the
recommendations
of
the
Exploratory Committee to renovate
the church hall to improve the
space for faith formation and to
build a new church hall.
The primary purpose of the
Fundraising Feasibility and Planning
Study is to identify the state of the
parish, in terms of both its
strengths and challenges so that
we can develop a road map as we
move “on the journey” of faith,
both by growing in our relationship
with God, and by sharing God’s
love with others through our
church community.
Walsh & Associates has assigned
Mr. Patrick Weaver as our
consultant.
Mr. Weaver during
mid-June will be interviewing up to
30 families to solicit answers to
questions so that he can
recommend how we can proceed
with the recommendations of the
Exploratory Committee.
All the questions prepared by the
Consultant firm have been
reviewed and approved by Fr. Nick
and the new Development
Committee which has be convened
by the Parish Pastoral Council.
Mr. Gary Bourland and his wife
Shaunne have agreed to chair the
committee on behalf of the parish.
They have recruited Thomas and
Kristine Coons, Bob Rode, Dennis

TeKrony as current members of the
committee. They are still seeking
committee members. If you are
interested and would like to help in
this new ministry of the parish,
please
contact
Gary
at
bourlandgl@gmail.com .
The representative sample of thirty
families was recommended to be
interviewed. They were selected
from those parishioners who help
found the parish, as well as
parishioners who are recent
members.
Additionally, the
committee that recommended the
group also attempted to have
representation from the various
ministry and social groups of the
parish.
The information requested during
the interview is confidential. Mr.
Weaver will only provide Fr. Nick
and the Development Committee
an aggregate of the information.
Individuals who are to be
interviewed should feel confident
that their privacy will not be
compromised. They should answer
as honestly as they are able, so that
the committee can make a
judicious decision based on the
information.
The opinion of parishioners who
were not selected for an in-person
interview, is also being solicited. In
the next few weeks all parishioners
will be receiving a survey: a
shortened version of the personal
interviews form. Parishioners can
respond anonymously. Again,
parishioners are asked to be honest
in their responses so that the
committee can make the best
decision based on the information
which they have available to them.
The Development Committee will
aggregate the responses to the
mailed survey. The results of both
the personal interviews and the
mail survey will be each be
evaluated and compared to
determine a sense of consistency
or divergence between the two
types of surveys.
It was
recommended that this is the most
expedient and cost effective way to
make a decision based on as wide
as possible survey of parishioners.
A report on the results of both
methods of survey should be
available for the August PAX VOX.
From the survey results, the
Development
Committee
will
recommend to Fr. Nick how we
should
proceed
with
the
renovations and building addition
plans.

Youth Mission Trip
Two years ago, Fr. Nick assisted by
celebrating mass at Good Shepherd
in Whitley City. The parishioners
there host mission trips for youth
from all over the United States.
They invited PAX CHRISTI to
bring a youth group to Whitley City
to complete a project for a local
family, such
as building a
handicapped assess ramp, or
painting and repairing a house for
an elderly resident of the area.
summer.
Good Shepherd has
accommodations for a group of up to
30 individuals including chaperones.
The teens will be responsible for
keeping their lodgings clean, and
participating in preparing the food and
washing dishes, as well as doing
volunteer work for a local resident.
During one afternoon, the teens will be
taken on a tour of the local area
mountains and villages.
PAX CHRISTI is planning to host
a mission trip for our youth this
Annual Diocesan Appeal
Yearly, the Diocese of
Lexington calls on our

various parishes in Eastern
Kentucky,
Catholic
Charities programs, the
priest and seminarian
funds, as well as some
diocesan programs that
support the efforts of
parishes, such as family
and youth ministries.

We kicked off the Annual
Appeal at PAX CHRISTI on
the weekend of May 2122, with a presentation by
Father Terry Hoppenjans,
the pastor of St. Michael’s
in Paintsville.
Fr. “Hop” has spent most
of his priestly ministry in
the mountains of Eastern
Kentucky and serves on
the
Mission
Appeals
Board. He is very much
aware of the benefits to
Eastern KY through our
support for the Appeal.
Our parish goal this year is
$50,382

100%
participation.
Last year we, as a parish,
we contributed $45,018

nearly 80% of our goal.
Please be generous.
