School sprinter (2010),
Kellie Grigg, is the new
2014 NCAA Big West
Conference Women’s 400
Meter Hurdle Champion.
Grigg, a senior from the
University of California
at Davis, converted from
sprints to hurdles just two
years ago, and has steadily climbed the school’s
hurdle rankings. Grigg
(pictured at left) currently
ranks fifth all-time in UC
Davis’ 100-meter Hurdles
and third all-time in the
400-meter hurdles.
Her 10-point, first-place
finish also helped the
Aggies edge Cal State
Northridge to win their
third consecutive Big West
Conference team championship. For the past two
seasons, Grigg also has
been named to the Big
West Conference’s AllAcademic Team.

Green Monsters: The Little
Red Cherries played the Green
Monsters at Krusi Field. In the top
of the first inning the Cherries’ Eri
Kakuno hit a solid line drive down
the third base line and ran to first
base. In the bottom of the first
inning the Cherries’ first baseman
Sadie Mozenter fielded a strong hit
and hustled to tag first. In the top
of the second inning, the Cherries’
Leah Benson smashed the coach’s
pitch and ran to first base. In the
bottom of the second, Alexandria
Lamprecht fielded a pop-fly ball
and threw it to Paloma Camacho at
first base.

Dolphins: For the Thunderbolts,
Aurora Stonehouse guarded first
base expertly, while Cadence
Trammel’s turn as catcher showed
consistency and tenacity. Jordan
Vaughan continually met the ball
in motion, grabbed a fast-flying
grounder and completed the game
by power hitting to right field,
bringing the base runner home.
Ella Rumrill defended the pitcher’s
mound with blue-chip stops and
passes, had a steady turn at bat, and
was later seen sliding into home.

On Thursday, May 15, the
Alameda Women’s Golf Club hosted the second round of the 84th
Fry Brothers Memorial Match Play
Tournament. This annual match
honors the Fry brothers — Earl,
Mark, Dick Fred and Tom — who
donated the first trophy to the
Alameda Women’s Golf Club in
1930, when all golf was “match
play.”
Three players forfeited their
rounds: two due to injuries in
Flight C and one because she was
in Maui and was unable to reschedule her match. Those who did play
called it a perfect day for golf.
Sunny, warm and a slight breeze
to keep the temperature down to
a comfortable degree combined to
make it a perfect day for golf: the
greens were fast, and the fairways
cut short and wide.
In Flight A it was Dot Moody
over Stephanie Bellato, 3 and 2. Tai
Chewpanich over Juanita Solano
4 and 3; Madeline Sally over (A3)
Bernice Herzberg, 4 and 3; and
Jackie Suh over Fran Mori by forfeit.
In Flight B it was Barbara Wood
over Barbara Mickle, 2 and 1;
Debbie Adams over Linda Ferrill ,
2 and 1; Louise Eilhardt over Sarah
Valentine, 2-up; and Pat O’Hara
over Carole Evans, 3 and 2.
In Flight C it was Kay Park
over Betty Hatch, 2 and 1; Bobbie
Hoepner over Pam Curtis, by forfeit; Diane Hughes over Susan
Logan, 1-up and Marty Stitzle over
Donna Cooper, by forfeit.
Today, May 22, should see some
good golf as the undefeated in each
flight play a match for first and sec-
