Xiahai Temple (8) is located on the corner of Haimen Lu, at no. 73
Kunming Lu. Dating back 300 years, the Buddhist monastery is the
oldest site in the Tilanqiao area. In past centuries, fishermen used to
go to the temple to pray for safe passage. Continuing up Kunming Lu,
turn right onto Zhoushan Lu, heading past a small fish and bird market to end up back on Changyan Lu – formally Ward Road. Turn left
(putting Ohel Moishe on Changyan Lu behind you) to see the sites of
the Ward Road Jail (9) (no. 147 on the left) and Ward Road Heim (no.

Continuing further down Changyang Lu, turn right onto Haimen Lu
where you can still see faded signs for ‘Horn’s Imbiss-Stube’ and ‘Café
Atlantic’ (7) at number 127. These rare authentic relics from the
1930-40s period are all that remain of what once was a row of Jewish
shops. In 2004 the signs were saved from being painted over at the
last minute.

Keep an eye out for: Many Tilanqiao buildings from the 1880s
and 1920s belong to the Queen Anne architectural style, used
throughout Shanghai by English architects. Also known as the
Romanesque Revival Style, this fashion is marked by rounded
arches on windows, round column with various detailing, and a
profusion of over-sized brick detailing.

If you still have some time left, make sure to wander around the area,
which has retained much of its original features. Even the tenements

In 2005, a Conservation Plan was completed for the area, which
identifies historic features, formulates policies to protect them and
guidelines for the future development of the area. A remodelling of
the area is under discussion, with plans to rival Xintiandi, and including hotels, entertainment and residential and office space.
Save Shanghai Heritage
The Save Shanghai Heritage group was established in 2003 as a result
of the rapidly changing urban landscape to address the preservation
of architectural heritage in Shanghai. The group’s aim is to promote
understanding, protection, and care of Shanghai’s heritage for the
enjoyment of its many residents and visitors.

once the largest in the Far East. During WWII it served the Japanese
and, after 1945, the Guomindang, before it was taken over by the
Chinese. In 1946-47 it hosted American trials against war criminals.
Today it is know as Tilanqiao Jail. Ward Road Heim (10) was established in January 1939, hastily converted from a former barracks,
and sleeping anywhere from six to 150 to a room. This Heim was the
largest camp in Shanghai, housing over 1,000 refugees before being
turned into a hospital.
