Betty Bruner, Area 8 Resident, suggested a wonderful idea. Some of our elderly residents would appreciate a helping hand with various tasks, such as moving their garbage cans in & out on Garbage Collection Days or placement of items at the curb on TREE or JUNK Heavy Trash Days. A response form on Page 8 of this Sentinel offers an opportunity to sign up as a Receiver or Provider of this kind of assistance. Please submit it to the BPHA office – we welcome your input and look forward to hearing from you! Union Pacific Railroad – Crossing Solutions Scott Golenternek, a resident on Falkirk, has cited a problem familiar to many BPHA residents. Trains seemingly are stopping more frequently at the railroad crossings that intersect our neighborhood. With the help of City Council Representative District C Ellen Cohen’s office, and specifically her Deputy Chief of Staff David Bonem, the following is a recommended course of action: If there is a train currently stopped call Union Pacific Railroad at 800-848-8715 (Option 4) and report the situation. Be prepared to give details on what city, cross streets, the exact time and any other pertinent information. To file a complaint, call the Community Relations Department at 800-848-8715 (Option 7). You can also write a letter to Union Pacific Railroad at 1400 Douglas St., Omaha, NE 68179. The railroad companies take these complaints seriously. Whenever complaints are filed, they look into the situation and if they find there are certain conductors or train yard operators who accrue a record of complaints, the company will issue citations and reprimands because it is their business to maintain relations with other entities on the line. Make sure a copy of your complaint is sent to David Bonem in order to maintain a repository of complaints in the event of a systemic problem. Contact David at David.Bonem@houstontx.gov or 832-393-3004. Weekley YMCA 5K & 1K Family Fun Run On Saturday morning, April 14, the YMCA is hosting a “Sprint for Spring” fundraising event. The fun run will weave its way through the streets of Braeswood Place. The planners are acutely aware of the importance of minimizing inconvenience to BPHA residents. They plan to distribute notices prior to the race announcing what will take place and the times that access in & out of the neighborhood may be temporarily affected. The event is sponsored to provide scholarships for at-risk kids who otherwise could not participate in YMCA programs. Continued on Page 3… RESERVE THE DATE! Alarm responses: One home whose alarm was activated was on Vacation Watch. Alarm was sounding as deputies arrived. Home was checked out and no problem was found. Vacationing residents were notified. Burglaries: Motor Vehicle – vehicle entered and contents gone through but nothing taken. Vehicle was unlocked and parked in driveway and was entered between midnight and 7 am. Residence – Burglars entered through rear when no one was home. A vehicle, which was later thought to be getaway car, was observed by nearby homeowner. Later that day, a home in Tanglewood area was burglarized. Resident’s cell was among valuables and was located through GPS feature. HPD went to location and arrested people there and our resident’s valuables were recovered. Traffic Monitoring: Arrest for outstanding warrants; citations for expired registration, expired motor vehicle inspection sticker, no insurance. BURGLARY UPDATE If you listen to the local news or read the newspaper, you are aware that the City of Houston and the surrounding communities are experiencing a dramatic increase in home and business burglaries. These burglaries have become very bold with the burglars going into shopping malls during business hours and crashing display cases to grab jewelry. Please be observant of your surroundings. Report anything suspicious to the Constable Patrol. If you are not a member, call HPD. There seems to be a trend with the burglaries to motor vehicles in our neighborhood – entry without activating the vehicle’s alarm system. Recently, I was given a brochure about a product designed to stymie the burglars attempt to bypass your vehicle’s alarm system. This device is called The Jimmi Jammer. Check it out. You know that if there is one brand of this type of anti-entry device, there are more. If this type of security device interests you, do some investigating. President’s Message, continued from Page 1: New and Improved BPHA Brochure In keeping with BPHA’s new website, a revised and updated informative brochure listing BPHA activities and services has been developed. Many thanks to Lisa Kantoff, Vice President-West, for her contribution of the beautiful paper for printing. Copies will be included in BPHA’s updated Welcome Packets and will also be available at BPHA’s General Meeting on April 10. New Sanitary Sewer on Castlewood The City of Houston has issued a work order to install a new sanitary sewer in the 3000 block of Castlewood and 8400 block of Greenbush. The goal is to alleviate flow problems experienced by the current system, particularly during rain events. This new sewer is being installed in the road right-of-way and all disturbed pavement will be replaced. Notices were delivered to the residents where work will be taking place. Projected completion is within approximately four weeks. Page 3 of 16 TRASH AND RECYCLING PROGRAM by Cathie Partridge Beware of CFL & LED light bulbs! Are CFL (compact fluorescent light bulbs) and LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs the best thing since sliced bread? True, they last longer than incandescent bulbs and may save you money in the long run. But, think again. CFL bulbs contain mercury that may be harmful to both humans and our environment. LED bulbs do not appear to be much better. If they break and end up in a landfill, LED bulbs are known to pollute ground water, lakes, rivers and streams. These bulbs contain high levels of arsenic, lead and other toxic chemicals. Incandescent light bulbs look like the best alternative as they are the least toxic and cleanest type of bulbs on the market today. For more information, go to these websites: http://vigilantcitizen.com/latestnews/eco-friendly-light-bulbs-containtoxic-chemicals/ http://seatoshiningsea.wordpress.com/2011/02/10/blog-post-guess-what-those-led-bulbs-arent-so-safeafter-all/ Got CFL bulbs in your house? What if you break a CFL light bulb? Check out the EPA website below for their cleanup procedures: http://epa.gov/cfl/cflcleanup.html. YOU MAY RECYCLE CFL BULBS AT LOWE’S AT BEECHNUT & 610! To acquire one or more small green recycling bins OR to get an extra one, stop by 3742 Drummond. No need to call. Bins are located on the west side of the house next to the empty lot. Grab a recycling yard sign & wire stand as well! Questions? Call Cathie Partridge at 713-218-9459 or e-mail chilsonpartridge@comcast.net. GARDEN OF THE MONTH by Jackie Addington Glover, Program Coordinator The Garden of the Month for March is located at 3515 Aberdeen, the home of David and Polly Roth. Their home is representative of the transition in architecture and landscaping in our neighborhood. The initial build out of our area occurred largely in the 50's and the design of homes was Houston's version of a ranch and midcentury modern styles. As these older homes are razed, a wider range of styles are found in the neighborhood, influenced more by preference of the homeowner and less that of developers. Like so many others, the Roths bought their lot because of the wonderful oak trees. Polly stated that they designed their house so the trees are a focal point from inside and out. They designed the landscaping with clean lines to fit their contemporary style home. At the same time, they didn't want it excessively stark so they built it around texture, color, and dimension. They accomplished this goal beautifully with a landscape of shapes and colors which includes magenta and burgundy plants and trees, such as the Japanese maple, contrasted with variegated greens of flax lily, border grasses, shrubs, and of course, the oak trees. Dear Steve, Dear Steve, Max and I can't thank you enough for the incredible job you did as our real estate agent. We would recommend you without hesitation to each and every one of our friends who would be looking to buy or sell a home in Houston. Thank you so much for helping us find our first house! We were so excited to get out there, but as rookies we didn't really realize what we were getting into! Your reputation for high-quality execution and your knowledge of the neighborhood is what convinced us to secure your services. We, however, received so much more than that. You helped us not only get our house sold within our time horizon and at a good price point but your guidance in getting our house ready for market as well as your list of referrals for contractors was another incredible bonus for us. Without rehashing all our personal chaos at the time, you were also an incredible friend and provided our family with support beyond what would be reasonable to expect in a business transaction. You consistently were focused on helping our family with solutions to a whole host of issues we did not anticipate having to deal with in our move from Houston to Seattle. Well, we are safe, relatively settled and thriving in our new town. We only wished that we could call upon your services to help us buy a home in this marketplace. I am sure that our next agent would not live up to the gold standard that you deliver. Alexandra and Max Steele From the very beginning you didn't waste any time, instead we starting looking at properties the day after we spoke about our interest. You were so accommodating to our schedules and still maximized our time at each location. We both knew very little about real estate and your wisdom and insight was extremely helpful! But even more than that, we began to really count on you to guide us through and you did! Thank you for being straight-forward and honest about the properties we looked at. We always felt like you gave us the true story based on your knowledge and experience. Your estimates on repairs and possible issues to expect were right on and this was helpful when deciding how much to leave in the budget for repairs! We found our home and absolutely love it! Thanks to your advice we paid exactly what we were hoping to pay and got more for it! Thanks for everything, you really made it a wonderful process!
