WELCOME
At Divine Savior Healthcare in Portage, WI, you’ll
enjoy a collegial atmosphere with over 50 active
medical staff in the community plus 50 consulting.
You’ll have the opportunity to work with a
talented, caring group of professionals in a family
friendly, community-focused healthcare setting.
You’ll find an exceptional level of staff
enthusiasm, camaraderie and stability, along
with an intense dedication to our patients, fellow
employees and to our community. Here you will
find individualized learning with preceptors who
have elected to teach versus being required
to teach, and an organization dedicated to a
positive experience.
Emergency Medicine – Dr. Jennifer Bahr, Dr.
Marc Biedermann, Dr. Thomas Jackson, Dr. Angela
Moreau, Dr. Brad Rogowski, Dr. Robert Redwood,
and Dr. Michael Walters
Experience the full spectrum of acute injuries
and illness during a rural Emergency Department
rotation. Given the practice location, learners can
expect to perform many needed procedures
for the patient such as fracture reductions and
splinting, suturing, reductions of dislocations,
incisions and drainage to name a few. Other
goals in this rotation include learning to approach
the undifferentiated patient, developing an
appropriate treatment plan, learning to admit a
patient for inpatient services, and learning how
to coordinate outpatient care as needed.
Orthopedics – Dr. Frank Walter, Dr. James
Foskett and Dr. Douglas Arnold
Rotation Experiences
Divine Savior Healthcare is a rotation site
with close to 20 preceptors for residents and
medical students. In addition to the resident
rotations featured here, we also participate in
the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine
& Public Health Primary Care Clerkship
program offering 6 week rotations for 4th year
medical students and 8 week rotations for 3rd
year medical students.
Rural Family Practice – Dr. Jill Pogorelec,
Dr. Brenda Blohm, Dr. Susan Kreckman,
Dr. Thaddeus Whiting, Dr. Jenna Derr,
Dr. Lisa Mironarich
Learn what rural family practice is all about.
Besides working in a family practice clinic,
this rotation includes potential experiences
in the Emergency Department, call time, and
hospital and nursing home rounds with
various preceptors.
This customized rotation focuses on common
general orthopedic conditions such as arthritis,
meniscus tears, common shoulder and elbow
pathology, common hand conditions including
carpal tunnel and trigger fingers as well as
pediatric conditions. Residents develop skills
in reading x-rays and in diagnosing orthopedic
issues as well as starting treatment plans,
knowing how to properly give joint injections, and
placing casts and splints.
General Surgery – Dr. Joshua Pogorelec and
Dr. Eric Anderson
Portage
Residents typically see, participate in, and prepare
a patient for endoscopies, laparoscopy and colon
surgeries, as well as participate in minor office
procedures that are typical of clinic settings. A
rotation in general surgery at Divine Savior is
definitely a hands-on, well-rounded experience.

Program Highlights
Portage, WI is a picturesque and thriving
community of approximately 10,000 people.
The city offers a historic downtown area, as well
as a contemporary retail shopping experience.
Portage has a growing industrial park with new
and established companies, an outstanding
public and parochial school system, and a
Madison Area Technical College campus.
Several scenic walking/biking trails are within
the city as well as 12 city parks, seven area golf
courses, a nearby ski hill, and more than 30,000
acres of wildlife areas and waterways, including
Lake Wisconsin, Swan Lake, and a public
beach at Silver Lake and the Wisconsin River,
offering superb recreational opportunities. In
Portage you have all the advantages of a small,
friendly riverside community, plus easy access
to “big city” malls and a major university just 30
minutes away in Madison.
We are in a great location just off three interstate
highways (I90, I94 and I39), 15 minutes from the
natural beauty and attractions of Wisconsin
Dells. This location offers easy access to four
major metropolitan areas with all their additional
social, cultural and shopping possibilities.
“I enjoy teaching the art of medicine, along with the science, during student and resident rotations at Divine
Savior Healthcare. I believe that the small community hospital offers an invaluable experience for students
and residents that is unobtainable at the academic medical center. I relish the opportunity to share with
students and residents the complexities, challenges, and joys of practicing in such an environment.”
- Dr. Michael Walters, MD JD FAAEM, Director of Hospital Based Physicians, Divine Savior Healthcare
