Why is it important to Shop Ponca First?
Shop Ponca First and you are supporting our schools. Our Ponca City businesses support our
schools through the Chamber PIE Partner Program, the school booster clubs, and various
extracurricular activities offered by our schools. No one else supports these programs like Ponca City
businesses – not an online retail business or a business in another community.
Shop Ponca First because our local businesses are the ones supporting our Ponca City United Way,
our churches, our local civic services, and the list goes on. When you shop Ponca City you are helping
these organizations. Every citizen benefits from these organizations supported by Ponca City
businesses.
Shop Ponca First because it allows our businesses to prosper... bringing you more variety in product
and service.
Shop Ponca First and you will save valuable time and gas.
Shop Ponca First and you are shopping with your friends.
Shop Ponca First and you are safe day and night.
Shop Ponca First and you keep tax dollars local, which equals more economic development
opportunity. Yes, shopping Ponca City will help expand our economy and expand job opportunities for
our citizens.
Shop Ponca First and you keep dollars here working for our community, providing more money for
city services such as streets, sewer, recreation, fire department, police department and again, the list
goes on and on.
Shop Ponca First and you will be assured that our businesses stand behind their products and
services. They are a phone call away. If you have an issue, they are right here in Ponca City to help.
Shop Ponca First because it is the right thing to do. We all benefit when that happens.
Shop Ponca First and you will not be disappointed!

Chamber Report — November
By Natalie Fraser, 2013 Chamber Chair
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It is so relaxed and gives us an
opportunity to gather with family and friends, eat, watch football, and be
grateful for all that we have. One of the things for which I am grateful is living
in the United States of America. After traveling a few weeks in Europe recently,
I came home with the reaffirmation that I am so lucky to be living in the United
States and even happier to be living in Ponca City, OK. There are many things
here in Ponca City that we take for granted that are not available in every
community, and we also avoid many of the issues that larger cities endure.
On my recent trips, I have had some time to catch up on the history of E.W. and
Lydie Marland. Every time I think about the movie "The Ends of the Earth," I
get more excited. Just think how incredible it would be to have it filmed in our
community. Getting the Marland story out to a much wider audience would be
great for Ponca City. Speaking of Mr. Marland, I can’t thank Pete Stynes
enough for hosting Business After Hours in the Marland Board Room and
Office at Phillips 66.
As we start winding down 2013, we still have so much to do and a very busy few
months ahead. The Community Wide Holiday Giveaway is the largest project
done by our Ponca City Business Council. We have made several changes that
will make it so much easier on our businesses. This year we are also adding the
Santa Buck Surprise program to the ways you are able to win. We will be giving
away instant prizes in our participating businesses. The sole purpose of this
retail promotion is to help keep our Ponca City retail base strong, and to
remind people to “Shop Ponca First.” A strong retail base is extremely
important and a sure sign of a vibrant and growing community.
Remember to ...

THE REALITY OF OBAMACARE
November 8th Presentation to Provide Information to Businesses
David Myers, Ponca City Development Authority
Obamacare. Just the name is enough to set off a spirited discussion among even the most eclectic
group of friends. Officially called the Affordable Care Act, it has become the poster child for the difficulty
the federal government has in making decisions. The arguments from both supporters and detractors are
many. If those arguments are actually correct, well that seems to be a happy coincidence. The emotions
surrounding the issue run high and it is almost impossible to have a well-reasoned conversation with
people from any political persuasion.
So, naturally, that is exactly what Ponca City will do.
Behind all of the rhetoric, there is a law that is beginning to take effect. That law will have
consequences for employers and employees alike. The timing depends on a lot of variables but judgment
day draws nigh. In order to help Kay County employers better understand what the new law will mean to
them, PCDA, Pioneer Technology Center, the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce, Ponca City Main
Street, the University Center at Ponca City, the Blackwell Industrial Authority and the Tonkawa
Development Authority will be hosting Mr. Andy Adams, a recognized expert in the new law, to present two
overviews of the law for area businesses.
Mr. Adams is in high demand around the region as exchanges open and employers have notification
requirements. His lively, engaging style brings clarity to employers seeking answers to questions, rather
than political doublespeak. Adams is general counsel for an insurance firm in Houston and he holds a law
degree from the University of Texas.
Two sessions will be provided in order to give area businesses the opportunity to select the time that
works best for them. The two hour sessions are designed to help employers understand what is real, what
is not, what is required and when it will be required. The cost of admission is free.
Both sessions will be held at Pioneer Technology Center on Friday, November 8 th. The first session
begins at 9:00 a.m., and the second begins at 1:00 p.m.
If you plan to attend, you are asked to do only two things. The first is to RSVP to the Ponca City
Area Chamber of Commerce at 580.765.4400. The second is to leave politics at the door. It’s not that we
don’t all completely agree with everything you have to say. The goal of November 8 th, however, is to make
sure that Kay County employers are well armed with the facts they need to operate effectively. Since no one
in attendance will have the power to make any changes, these sessions are going to stick with helping
employers figure out how to comply with a law that some love, some hate, but everyone will have to live
with.
Make your plans now to attend one of these two hour sessions. This will be a no nonsense,
informative presentation, with questions to help you understand how you can meet your obligations under
the law. While the focus will be on what employers will need to do to comply, you may also pick up useful
information you can pass on to your employees about what this brave new world means to them.

At Freddy’s, frozen custard is such a signature part of the menu that it’s
included in the name. But surprisingly, the Freddy’s story doesn’t begin
with dessert. It all started with a main course back in the 1950’s. The
savory steakburger is inspired by the 50's style staple and reminiscent of
an era focused on quality, cooked-to-order meals that bring families and
loved ones together. Enjoying great food without a long wait doesn’t
mean your meal has to be cooked before you order it. From sandwiches
to sundaes, Freddy’s makes food fresh after you ask for it because that’s
the kind of quality you deserve.
