In my last year’s November message, I talked about the fact that Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims in the New World in 1621 and the fact that in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on the final Thursday in November. Then, on December 26, 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt signed a resolution making the fourth Thursday in November a national holiday. BUT, the First National Proclamation of Thanksgiving was given by the Continental Congress in 1777 from its temporary location in York, Pennsylvania (The British were occupying our national capital which was in Philadelphia at the time). The Congress recommended to each state that the residents give thanks for the blessings our nation had received, for our liberties, and for our troops. During the second half of the19th century, Thanksgiving traditions varied by region. For example, in New England a raffle was held on Thanksgiving eve. The prizes were mainly geese or turkeys. On Thanksgiving morning a shooting match was held followed by a church service and the traditional feast. The feast included turkey, pumpkin pie, pigeon pie and other tasty dishes. The 1900s saw the introduction of football matches and “ragamuffin parades”, consisting mostly of children dressed in old and mismatched clothing. This parade has been replaced by lavish parades in various cities, including the Macy’s Parade in New York City. Hopefully, you all had fun at our annual potluck and silent auction! Don’t forget to make your reservations for the general meeting/luncheon at the Pinery. The elite singers from Chaparral High School will be entertaining us with a medley of songs Do remember to give thanks for family, friends, and the wonderful country where we are privileged to live. We lived in Alamogordo, NM while dad worked with the chimpanzees that piloted the first space flights, and in Texas and Louisiana. I have been mostly raised in Louisiana from elementary school through college. I graduated with a BS in Radiologic Technology from University of Louisiana, Monroe in 1977. I married my husband, Chris, the day after graduation. He is a retired Wildlife Biologist. We have lived in Austin and San Marcos,TX, New Orleans, LA,Vidalia, LA (across the Mississippi from Natchez,MS )and Baton Rouge ,LA. I completed several advanced study programs and was doing not only X-Rays, but CT, Nuclear Medicine, Mammography and Ultrasound. I eventually dropped all other areas of diagnostic radiology with the exception of Ultrasound as I liked it the best. I am now retired, however , during my career as a Sonographer; I did become registered in and practiced the areas of cardiac, vascular, obstetrics , abdominal and neurosonology. I just like to keep challenged. My husband and I have been married for 38 years and have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. We came to Colorado to be closer to our daughter, Laura, and her 3 children who live in Parker. Our son, Cooper lives outside of Chicago with 2 children , but it is too darn cold there to do anything except visit. We are enjoying our new surroundings in Franktown and are doing a lot of sightseeing. My hobbies include: scrapbooking and paper arts, bird watching, art journaling and card making, needlework, sewing and watching grandchildren grow. I have also been known to make boozy cupcakes. Chris is an avid metal detecting fella and loves to write articles for wildlife and metal detecting journals. We are both crazy for photography and are seldom without our cameras.
