What are some of your favorite things about Glory to God?
“It’s user-friendly. From the lighter weight, to the return of ‘old favorites,’ to timely new
texts, to old tunes, to accessible world music, to the notes at the bottom of each page,
to the clear type face, this is a book that the people LIKE. Makes my job a breeze!”
—JANE VAN VALKENBURG, Director of Music, First Presbyterian Church of Bryan, TX
“Wonderful variety! Something for everyone!”
—DIANA WAGAR, First Presbyterian Church of Findlay, OH
“Glory to God provides churches with a blended worship experience that is life-giving.”
—ANTHONY SMITH, Music Director, Chatham, Ontario, Canada
How has your congregation’s worship been impacted by the
introduction of Glory to God?
“In an effort to create more ‘blended worship,’ before Glory to God I was making bulletin inserts almost every Sunday. But now the various songs and styles I need are all
there in one book.”
—TERESA VIOLETT McCOY, Beckley Presbyterian Church of Beckley, WV
“Even though my church has only adopted the hymnal for the choir at this time, we
have been using a lot of the material in the hymnal to enhance our worship. I feel like
the variety of music presented in Glory to God has already made an impact on our choir
and congregation.”
—KEVIN FLANNAGAN, Green Spring Presbyterian Church of Abingdon, VA
What advice do you have for congregations worried about
fundraising for a new hymnal?
“It’s very easy to get a congregation to realize that this isn’t a church budget issue, and
they will donate one or more hymnals in memory or honor of folks.”
—VICKI PETERSON FEY, Director of Music, First Presbyterian Church of Bristol, TN

The Bible is full of singing. Throughout the Old and New Testament we hear women
and men raising their voices to God with songs of praise, songs of joy, songs of
lament. God’s good Creation, singing God’s songs. As biblical scholar and author
Walter Brueggemann said, “We sing because we have been breathed on.”

GLORY
GOD
We hope that you will sense God’s words in this breath of new life: Glory to God,
the new hymnal for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). This collection of favorites, old
TO
and new, seeks to unify a diverse church, serve and enrich a changing church, and
the presbyterian hymnal
strengthen God’s church
for a new generation. Hymnals give a glimpse of the church
at the present moment, showing us who we have always been, and who we are yet
to become. Theologian Martha Moore-Keish remarked, “The heartbeat of our faith is
the heartbeat of this hymnal.”
This catalog provides helpful information about Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal—
its contents and theology; the various editions available, both print and electronic; how
to educate your congregation about a new hymnal; how to raise funds to purchase
the new book for your church; and more. Throughout these pages you will find brief
SURVEY SAYS! facts gathered from an extensive survey of current users of
Glory to God, as well as words of wisdom and inspiration about hymns and singing.
If you have any questions about the hymnal, please do not hesitate to contact us. You
can reach us at 1-800-533-4371, or on the web at www.PCUSAStore.com.
“When we sing,” John Calvin once wrote, “we are certain that God puts the words in
our mouths.” We offer this new hymnal to you in that spirit, that it may bring you new
words, and new ways, to give Glory to God.

SOME FACTS ABOUT YOUR NEW
HOW MANY HYMNS ARE IN THE NEW HYMNAL?
There are 853 hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs in the new hymnal.
WHAT KINDS OF HYMNS ARE THERE?
There is music covering all major historical and contemporary sacred genres, including approximately
thirty-five African American/Gospel hymns (“Soon and Very Soon,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” etc.).
There are many older hymns (“Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty”), older hymns that have never been
published in a Presbyterian hymnal (“Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” “Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is
Calling”), contemporary praise songs (“Awesome God”), and global music (music from six continents,
in many different languages). In addition, there are more than twenty songs from the Taize (pronounced
“tuh-ZAY”) community.
WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF MUSIC IN GLORY TO GOD?
•“Gather Us In,” text by Marty Haugen
•“Rock of Ages,” text by Augustus Toplady
•“Come and Fill Our Hearts/Confitemini Domino,” from the Taizé community. (In English and Latin)
•“Shout to the North,” text by Martin Smith
•“Freedom Is Coming,” from the South African freedom movement
•“Halle, Halle, Hallelujah,” a traditional Caribbean tune
•“His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” text by Civilla D. Martin
•“O Lord, Our Lord, How Majestic Is Your Name,” by Michael W. Smith
You can find more examples on page 4. The complete list of hymns is online at www.PCUSAStore.com.
IS THERE AN ELECTRONIC EDITION?
There are four electronic editions: a web-based online edition, an eBook edition, an App, and a display
edition for projection. See pages 9–10 for more details on all of these editions.
WHO DEVELOPED THE HYMNAL?
The hymnal was developed by the fifteen person Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song
(PCOCS), a volunteer committee of musicians, scholars, pastors, and theologians. The Presbyterian
Publishing Corporation (PPC), the Office of Theology & Worship (OTW) of the PC(USA), and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians (PAM) collaborated to develop the project. In 2012 the hymnal was
commended for use in the PC(USA) by the General Assembly. It was published in September 2013.
PPC funded the entire project; no General Assembly funds were used to create or produce the hymnal.
BESIDES ENGLISH, WHAT LANGUAGES ARE INCLUDED IN GLORY TO GOD?
Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish, Latin, French, Sotho, Swahili, and other languages
are printed where appropriate. Languages that use characters instead of letters are printed with the
actual characters. Although this songbook is not primarily a multilingual hymnal, over 100 hymns and
songs in Glory to God are from the global church.

WHAT INDEXES ARE IN THE BOOK?
x
The pew edition has several indexes to assist in the preparation of worship, or for use as a study
or devotional resource. These include: First Line and Common Title, Psalms, Scripture, Revised
Common Lectionary, Authors, Composers and Sources, Tune, and Meter.
GLORY
Glory to God has forty-eight pages of essential
liturgical resources: the Service for the Lord’s Day (includGOD
ing the Lord’s Supper with musical responses), Baptism and Reaffirmation of Baptism, and services for

Daily Prayer (Morning, Midday, Evening, and Close of Day). Texts for the Lord’s Prayer, Apostles’ and
Nicene Creeds, Brief Statement of Faith, and Ten Commandments are also provided. Some texts are
translated into Spanish and Korean.
These pages are drawn primarily from the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship—putting a sampling
of the treasury of Reformed liturgy in the hands of each worshiper. These materials allow full services of
worship to be led without bulletins or other worship aids, something especially useful in camp and conference settings. More importantly, the hymnal is an invaluable teaching tool, providing a strong example of
liturgy that is simultaneously contemporary, traditional, Reformed, and ecumenical.
WHAT COLOR IS THE HYMNAL?
Glory to God is available in your choice of red or purple cover. There are also two cover editions to
choose from (contents are the same):
•Presbyterian version: The Presbyterian Hymnal, PC(USA) seal
•Ecumenical version: Hymns, Psalms, and Spiritual Songs, without the PC(USA) seal
WILL I BE ABLE TO IMPRINT MY CHURCH’S NAME ON THE FRONT COVER?
Yes! See the Order Form for details.
HOW BIG IS IT?
It is 15/16 inches thick and 2 pounds 3 ounces, thinner than and approximately the same weight as the
1990 hymnal.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Information
FOR YOUR
Every hymn has a brief informational note at the bottom of the page, with interesting tidbits
about the history and theology of the text or tune. Here are some examples:
15 ALL CREATURES OF OUR GOD AND KING
Sometimes called “The Canticle of the Sun,” this cosmic roll call allows human beings to give voice
to all creation. One of the earliest religious poems in the Italian language, it is made even more
expansive by this broad, repetitive melody with interspersed “Alleluias.”
306 BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS
Written to express a pastor’s unwillingness to leave a beloved congregation, this hymn is frequently
used as an expression of Christian fellowship, especially at the conclusion of the Lord’s Supper. The
tune is attributed to an influential Swiss musician and publisher.
818 BY GRACIOUS POWERS
This text (made from the author’s [Dietrich Bonhoeffer] last poem) turns in the middle of stanza
two, where broad affirmations yield to a prayer continuing through the rest of the hymn, a
prayer that testifies to deep confidence. The minor tune helps to convey such tensions in the
life of faith.

Decide
HELPING YOUR CONGREGATION
x
Adopting a new hymnal is an important decision for a congregation. Here are ways you can begin the conversation in your church.
GLORY
ARE WE READY FOR A NEW
HYMNAL?
GOD
TO
the presbyterian hymnal
HOW TO START THE DISCUSSION IN YOUR CONGREGATION
Congregational songbooks are friends and companions on the Christian journey. They accompany believers
through the church year, amidst significant events like baptisms and funerals, and in times of great faith and
doubt. Hymnals’ worn covers are familiar and welcome sights in pews. The decision to change hymnals is, thus,
an important one. It is important for staff and congregation members to engage one another in conversation.
Here is a suggested plan:
•Pastors and musicians should talk about their hopes and desires for worship and music. Ask questions like:
——
——
——
——
How has worship changed over the past twenty years?
Does your current congregational songbook meet your needs?
How often do you use music from other sources, or insert music into the bulletin?
Would it be helpful to have a contemporary collection of Christian hymns, Psalms, and spiritual songs
(from all musical styles)?
•The Worship Committee should add this discussion to their agenda. Ask questions like:
—— How important is it to use a Presbyterian hymnal?
—— How has worship changed in your congregation since the purchase of your current hymnal? How has
worship in your community changed in the last decade?
—— What does your congregation need in a hymnal (large print, electronic edition, etc.)?
—— Begin conversation about how your congregation would fund the purchase of a new songbook.
•Take results of the staff and committee’s discussions to the Session. Use resources here and on our website
to further conversation and answer questions.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES FOR HYMNAL FUNDRAISING AND EDUCATION
Several complimentary resources are available to help you educate your congregation about the new hymnal,
raise funds for its purchase, and introduce it in worship. These include:
Complimentary bookplates: These will be given free with all orders. They will be available in four styles:
In Honor of, In Memory of, Presented to, or blank. You may order bookplates, or you can download a
free pdf of the bookplates to use in your own printer. They will print on standard Avery labels. Visit
www.PCUSAStore.com for the pdf.
Offering envelopes will be supplied free to churches for use in hymnal fundraising campaigns.

HOW TO RAISE FUNDS FOR A NEW
The decision to purchase new hymnals is a significant one in the life of a congregation. Here are a few
ideas for paying for this important resource:
•Invite individuals and families to purchase single copies in honor or memory of loved ones. This
has historically been an easy and fast way of raising the necessary money. We will supply offering envelopes for use in a fundraising campaign (see previous page).
•Build this expense into the annual stewardship campaign.
•Host an evening “Sing for Your Supper.” Sell tickets for dinner and a congregational talent show,
a hymn sing, or a special performance by the choir. Publicize within the local community.
•Sell the current hymnals to congregation members for a minimal cost.
ONCE THE HYMNALS ARRIVE
•Plan to retire the current hymnals with a short liturgy in worship one Sunday. See the
“Resources” tab on our Web site. The hymnals accompanied your congregation on many important days.
•It is often appropriate to return dedicated hymnals to their original donor.
•Plan a celebration once the new hymnals arrive. Sing melodies, use lyrics in devotions, and
encourage their usage in all aspects of congregational life.
•Be sure to write thank you notes to donors! Bookplates for dedicated hymnals are also available.
INSTALLMENT PAYMENT PLAN
We understand that these are challenging times for many congregations, so we want to make paying for the
new hymnal as easy as possible. To help with this, we will accept payment for your order of one hundred or
more copies of the pew edition in twenty-four monthly payments over the course of a two-year period. Just pay

What are some of your favorite things about Glory to God?
x
“I love the background on each hymn found at the bottom of the page. Sometimes I get so
wrapped up in wanting to know more about its genesis or when the tune was written versus
the lyrics that I totally lose track of where we are in the piece!”
GLORY—LINDA KURTZ, Burke Presbyterian Church of Burke, VA
“I have loved the reaction that I’veGOD
gotten from members about the content of the hymns. One
TO
the presbyterian hymnal
Sunday afternoon, I even
caught a member sneaking into the church office to copy the hymn
from that morning because they were words that she thought her daughter really needed to
hear. I like that Glory to God is easy to use and accessible to the congregation, but I love that
it spreads the word about God’s love. What more could you want?”
—PASTOR, First Presbyterian Church of Batesville, AR
How has your congregation’s worship been impacted by the
introduction of Glory to God?
“My congregation’s children, youth, and adults—whether more classical or contemporary
leaning musically—can all use the same book. . . an unbelievable simplifier in planning and
communication. Unlike most things that are a compromise this has enough content to be comprehensive for all. It’s a like a ‘super hymnal.’”
—MICHAEL VAUGHN, Director of Music, The Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church of Spring, TX
What advice do you have for congregations worried about
fundraising for a new hymnal?
“Invite the entire congregation to donate a book or books, and suggest occasions on which to
give. In honor of a graduate, of your dad on Father’s Day, of a new baby (since this will be the hymnal they grow up with!), of an engagement, a marriage, a Veteran on the Fourth of July, etc. Have
donation forms handy in literature racks, pews, on tables at church dinners. Everyone can afford
to give one book, everyone will feel ownership, everyone will benefit from having Glory to God.”

“This hymnal will strengthen our faith at the local level and strengthen our bonds at the
denominational level.”
