MESSAGE
FROM THE
Presenter
Oh, Canada! We’re tackling new
territories this season – literally.
When I set out last fall to start
programming the 2016-2017
season, I was inspired to celebrate
Canada’s fast-approaching 150th
birthday by assembling a season
of performances, films and events
from all across Canada. This season
we’re going on a cross-country road
trip, stopping in every province and
territory to make new friends and
visiting with some of our long-time
Arden Theatre family.
We live in a country where we are
privileged enough to openly honour
and celebrate the art and culture of
our Indigenous Peoples, our ancestors and newcomers to Canada. We are
a country rich with resources, but I believe it is the people, as well as our
artistic and cultural talent, that provides the greatest wealth and reward.
This year, I hope that you enjoy your artistic and cultural journey across
this vast landscape and join me in celebrating this beautiful country we
call home.

In this riveting keynote speaking
engagement, Egyptian-born
Canadian author and journalist,
Mohamed Fahmy, discusses the
media trial of the century and
his incredible ordeal in being
freed from imprisonment. He has
worked extensively in the Middle
East, covering conflicts like the
Iraq War and the Arab Spring for
CNN, the BBC, and the New York
Times. In 2013, Mohamed and two
other journalists were unjustly
arrested, and sentenced to seven
years in prison in Egypt. Pardoned
of all charges in 2015, Mohamed
has since founded the Fahmy
Foundation for Free Press, to fight
the injustices he suffered and

In 13th century Germany, the
medieval town of Hamelin is way
too big for its lederhosen. The town
is governed by a spoiled Mayor, his
Mommy and stuffy corporate cronies
who have left the town in serious
trouble. Twins Celeste and Ralph are
baffled, so with the help of a hapless
“Minstrel”, they devise a plan and
set out to make the grown-ups
wake up and smell the strudel!
Stretching the boundaries of live
theatre through mime, dance,
clown, puppetry and acrobatics,
Axis Theatre has amused and
inspired children, families and
adults with entertaining shows for
over 40 years.
