Normandeau (Canada) Bernard Vaillot (France) Scriptwriter / Director: Jon Kalina Format: HDCAM SR “Whisky Zulu, Whisky Zulu you are cleared for take-off 2-4 left. You are cleared 2-4 left.” To the outsider it’s gibberish but this is the highly structured sound of the control tower at New York's JFK airport. Air traffic controllers here are working in two-hour bursts of frantic energy. Staring at screens and feverishly writing they are keeping close contact with the hundreds of airplanes taking off or landing at New York’s three major airports. Inside those planes thousands of passengers are strapped in, hoping that all will go well. It's a busy, scary world up there in the skies and it's getting scarier by the minute. Air Traffic Controllers play a critical role in keeping air passengers safe. Most of us have only the vaguest notion of what they do and no idea of how their job is changing. It's time we paid attention. The job is famously nerve-wracking. If something goes wrong – and sometimes it does – people die. That’s stress. Air Traffic Controllers are a key element in keeping passengers safe - in this film we'll go behind the scenes to show you the complexity of air traffic control. We’ll explain the tasks, the codes and show the viewer the knuckle biting challenges that are the daily life of an air traffic controller. And we'll look into future of air traffic control: will computer-run airplanes be guided by computerized air traffic control? Will that be an improvement or a nightmare waiting to happen? À FLEUR DE PEAU Documentary (2015), 1 x 46' Production: Ideacom international Broadcaster: Canal Vie Producers: Josée Roberge, Josette D. Normandeau Scriptwriter: Tiziana B. Saad Director: Alain Belhumeur Format: HDCAM SR Self-harm: the term evokes distress, depression, lack of self-esteem, and a desperate attempt to control emotions. Previously perceived as a marginal phenomenon, over the last decade this disturbing behaviour among youth has become widespread, a source of worry, particularly among professionals who work directly with youth. In this film, three young people talk frankly about their problem and dream out loud of a better life for themselves. Today, approximately 20% of teenagers in North America practice some form of self-harm—an enormous number that continues to grow. How did this happen? What exactly does it involve? What are the warning signs? Do effective treatments exist? Insight is gleaned by specialists who answer some of these questions and offer clues to help us understand a harrowing subject. I D E A C O M I N T E R N AT I O N A L 2015 4 FILMOGRAPHY MONSIEUR LE MAIRE, JEAN DRAPEAU ET SA VILLE Documentary (2015), 1 x 52' Broadcasters: Radio-Canada, RDI Producers: Amy Webb, Josette D. Normandeau Scriptwriters: Marc Laurendeau, Jacques Nadeau Director: Bruno Boulianne Format: HDCAM SR Journalist Marc Laurendeau’s take on famous Montreal mayor Jean Drapeau. Over a period of five decades Marc Laurendeau observed, parodied, interviewed and critiqued “Monsieur le maire Jean Drapeau”, all the while harbouring an undeniable admiration for him and his gutsy accomplishments. Nearly 30 years after Drapeau’s last day in office, Laurendeau questions Drapeau’s contemporaries on critical moments in his political career. Jean Drapeau’s political heritage is that of a man who changed Montreal forever. APOCALYPSE WORLD WAR I APOCALYPSE LA 1ÈRE GUERRE MONDIALE Documentary Mini-series (2014), 5 x 52' Co-production: France / Canada (CC&C / Ideacom) Broadcasters: France 2, TV5 Québec Canada, TVO, Knowledge Network, Planète, RTBF, National Geographic Channels (165 countries), Discovery, US/American Heroes Producers: Louis Vaudeville, Pascale Ysebaert (France) Josette D. Normandeau, Josée Roberge (Canada) Scriptwriters / Directors: Daniel Costelle, Isabelle Clarke Format: HDCAM SR Website & iPad Apps: apocalypse-10lives.com In 1914 the world entered into a period of unimaginable conflict and suffering. How did such a cruel and far-reaching conflict occur? How did humankind endure this atrocity for four long years? Could the sacrifice of an entire generation have been avoided? Produced using over 500 hours of archival footage, much of it previously unseen, and now completely colorized, the series Apocalypse WWI takes a strategic and global approach to address these fundamental questions, but also, and most importantly, tells the story with compassion and empathy. The story brings us to the heart of battle, from the trenches in the North of France to the lesser-known fronts of Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and Palestine, as well as to the everyday life of civilians behind the lines. The narration brings to life the memories and the experiences of these men and women, and helps us better understand and feel how yesterday’s world was driven to apocalypse. Documentary Mini-series (2014), 2 x 45' Co-production: France / Canada (Camera Lucida / Ideacom) Broadcasters: ARTE France, Radio-Canada, RDI Producers: François Bertrand (France) Josée Roberge, Eric Michel, Josette D. Normandeau (Canada) Scriptwriters / Directors: Pascal Cuissot, Luc Riolon et Rachel Seddoh Format: HDCAM SR Our 21st century planet is an insatiable energy-devourer. But since the Fukushima disaster, we’ve become suspicious and fearful of nuclear energy. Our future is at stake. An unexpected treasure is buried in the ocean floor: methane hydrate, gas trapped in ice. This resource, an energy reserve that will last hundreds of years, is lying there, ready to be tapped, and it exists all over the world. Access is difficult, but the prospect of running out of fuel sources and the growing appetite for energy due to the galloping world population have pushed countries into a feckless race for more energy. Even as scientists question the wisdom of exploiting these methane deposits, a new industrial revolution has been set in motion. But can we exploit methane without damaging the global environment? Under what conditions can this be accomplished? And what are the risks for the world’s environment and its inhabitants? Will extracting methane hydrates be a viable ecological solution when other gases, such as shale gas, have failed? How can the mere mention of this erogenous zone provoke such argument, doubt, and salacious laughter? G Spotting is an investigation into the heart of the fascinating world of scientific sexology, a close-up of the “G” zone. I D E A C O M I N T E R N AT I O N A L 2015 7 FILMOGRAPHY IS THE MAGNETIC POLE ABOUT TO FLIP? Normandeau (Canada) Scriptwriters: Stéphane Nicolopoulos & Jon Kalina Director: Yanick Rose Format: HDCAM SR The earth has two North poles, the geographic pole and the magnetic pole. The magnetic pole is the one that attracts the needles of our compasses. It’s always moving, but science tells us it is now moving rapidly. Could it be about to flip? What will be the impact? Paleomagnetism has taught us that the magnetic pole flips regularly, going from north to south and vice versa, once every 250,000 years on average. However, the last inversion occurred 780,000 years ago! Are we on the eve of such a major event? The film follows Canadian geophysicist Larry Newitt and French geologist Jean-Jacques Orgeval as they meet astronauts, marine biologists, paleomagneticians and archeomagneticians, in an attempt to understand, measure and explain the consequences of a pole inversion. We once saw “moving out” as a logical step to adulthood. What are the reasons behind this drastic societal change? Part One: Who are the stay-at-home children? How are they perceived? What are the family dynamics at work? Part Two: Why do young second-generation immigrants tend to leave the family nest only when they marry.
