What is Floda31?
Floda31 is a laboratory
for innovation and
creativity.
We provide an
environment that fosters
new connections,
networks and crossdisciplinary encounters,
in order to come up
with sustainable design
solutions.

Current set-up
Lots of space, ancient forest
all around, a workshop
full of tools, a network of
creative thinkers and doers
and plenty of time to play.
Why here?
This part of Sweden is in the last
remaining wilderness of Europe.
We are situated in the Taiga
forest, which is the largest
connected forest stretching
around the Northern
Hemisphere making up 27%
of the world’s total forest.
Why here?
Being here encourages talented
individuals from various
disciplines to collaborate and
share knowledge in order to
redefine problems and create
innovative solutions.
Why us?
Richard Holland and Marije
de Haas ran a creative agency
company called Bullet in London
from 1998-2010.

Why us?
Working with a wide range of
clients and collaborators inspired
us use our skills and network for
‘the greater good’.
How do we stimulate
innovation?
Workshops
We host bespoke workshops.
Residencies
Year round we are open to
individual residents to work on
their own projects.
Curated Residencies
Twice a year we invite someone
to set a brief and to create a
team to fulfill this brief.

Multi-disciplinary
We bring together specialists from different backgrounds
and get them to collaborate – to stimulate lateral thinking
and approaching problems from a new viewpoint.

Exploration
When we have assembled a team, we set some exercises
to explore the brief, experiment and test out new theories.

Once we have our innovative solution we implement it. Can this
solution work on different scales, do we need to change things?

Creation
With our new thinking we get creative. You never really know if
something is going to work, unless you try. We get our hands dirty
and start prototyping.

Curated Residencies
The curated residencies encourage
cross-disciplinary interaction. A
curator will set a brief, a team will
be invited to work on this brief.
The aim of the curated residency
is to generate an outcome. This
outcome won’t be prescriptive but
will evolve from the experience of
the residency.
Summer 2011: Friggebodar
Curated by Johan Berglund
This project is to design and build two sustainable
friggebodar that can house residents at Floda31.
The friggebod will serve as a sustainable prototype,
and will propose new and innovative ways of
designing with the climate in mind.
Team:
p Unit 8, the Bartlett School of Architecture, UK
p Umeå School of Architecture, Sweden
p Lucy Rist: Sustainable forest specialist
p Stoffel Kuenen: Interaction designer
p Martinssons: Pre-fabricated local wood (TBC)
p Plano AB: Tools
Summer 2011: Hill park
Curated by John Bassett
We will design and build a sculptural action sport park
for use summer and winter, by snowboarders & skiers,
mountainbikers & BMXers. Additionally it will function
as an architectural and engineering ‘testing ground’ for
experimental, innovative and sustainable building techniques.
Team:
p Nicolas Müller/Gigi Rüff: Professional snowboarder (TBC)
p Rowan Sorrel: Professional mountain biker
p Jakob Gate: Architectural student
p Henric Johansson: Hunter master
p Umeå University: Biologists and scientists
