PUBLISHED CARTOONIST / ILLUSTRATOR
Cartoons published in regional and national magazines including The Saturday Evening Post, Time
Magazine, MPLS St. Paul Magazine, Cabin Life Magazine and the Lake Country Journal
Syndicated editorial cartoonist for five Minnesota newspapers.
Designed storyboards and products used by Warner Brothers and Disney.
Illustrated 30+ children's books and created advertising art for Fortune 100 corporations.
Author/ illustrator of award winning drawing book Cartooning Basics.
TEACHING ARTIST
Residencies in cartooning, animation, claymation, drawing, watercolor at summer camps, young
artist/author conferences, and art centers throughout Minnesota. Artist in Education teaching residencies
in schools from Arizona to Washington DC and around Minnesota for over 30 years.
ACE Media Arts instructor for advanced teacher training with the Perpich Center for Arts Education
2009-2011.
Conducted teacher training workshops, in-services and presentations for the Minnesota Arts
Education Association, the National Art Educators Association the Walker Art Center as well as
individual school districts around Minnesota.

Arts Residencies
My residencies directly relate to Minnesota State Art Standards, including:
• Understanding elements of visual art, including (color, line, shape, form,
texture, and space)
• Understanding the characteristics of visual art from a variety of cultures
and historical times;
• Using the tools, basic skills, and techniques of different mediums; and
• Creating original works of art to communicate ideas.
During my residencies
Students will learn to create their own characters using basic shapes and
simple materials (paper, pencil, black markers). Depending on the grade, we
will cover: Creating human, animal, and anthropomorphic characters,
onomatopoeia, sequential storytelling,
Participants will learn professional ways to approach problem solving
from both visual and narration viewpoints.

Final Outcomes of a residency may include:
• art displays
• publishing in school and community newspapers
• publishing comics and graphic novels
• broadcasting on community TV
• illustrating calendars, greeting cards
• Powerpoint presentations
School Assemblies
Fast Paced, fun, entertaining, informative presentations incorporating
drawing skills, cartooning history, Lots of cartooning trivia for the entire
school. I draw lots of examples and leave the autographed cartoons at the
school.
Teacher Training
Editorial Cartooning in the classroom - (Social Studies meets art)
Animation: from flip books to video. Easy, inexpensive ways to create
animation in a classroom.
Making Claymation movies on a budget. Clay character and set making
techniques, camera and computer instruction.
How to Make Graphic Novels and illustrate stories. Teach the ways the
pros plan, write, draw, and publish.
