BOA RD UPDAT E | PAR T N E R P R I ME R DHWInsider DHWI Tweeners compete in Sunny Kids Triathlon After five months of training, the DHWI team shines in the Tom Landry Center Event to the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute Celebrating 5 Years Celebrating 5 Years of Service After the race: Two of the racers recover and celebrate with their coaches and Tweeners team leaders. For the past five months, nine of DHWI’s Tweeners have be working toward the ambitious goal of being a youth triathlete. Their opportunity came at dawn Saturday, April 18, as they competed in the Baylor Sunny Kids Tri, part of the Baylor Tom Landry Triathlon. They all completed 200 meters of swimming, 6 miles of biking and 1.2 miles of running. Before they could dive into the first leg of the event, many of the kids had to learn how to swim. For months the students received free competitive swimming lessons at the Baylor Tom Landry Center. Though some of the kids saw one lap as intimidating at the beginning, all of the participants swam the complete 8 lengths and bolstered their confidence in the process. “I used to be a slow swimmer, but now I’ve speeded up enough where I think I could place first, second, or third,” said one 14 year-old participant. For the 6 mile bike ride, the kids were outfitted with new bikes, helmets and locks. “The kids get to keep all their equipment: tri-kit, jersey, bike, running shoes, and helmet,” said Tyson Bain, manager of community outreach at DHWI. It was a great incentive and encouragement for them to keep up with the intensive training that goes with being a triathlete. Sometimes the kids would train 3 days a week in addition to participating in the Tweeners program. “The majority of adolescents get into trouble between the hours of 3 and 6 pm, so if we can keep them occupied, they’re less likely to get into trouble,” said Bain. On June 5, 2015, DHWI will host a community celebration of its 5 years of service to the South Dallas Community. On June 5, 2015, DHWI will kick off its celebration of five years of service in the southern Dallas community. This community appreciation event will feature free food, music and family fun! SAVE THE DATE All of the hard work paid off, as all nine of the triathletes completed the race and were greeted by cheers from parents, siblings, supporters and coaches. A face full of focus. One of the younger participants rounds the final turn, before jetting off and completing a 1.2 mile run. Spring 2015 - DHWInsider OCTOBER 24, 2015 1 DHWI Chef Cookoff Sponsors Agree to Hosting Next Year’s Event The Texas weather was unpredictable, but the event was phenomenal. On April 9th, nearly 200 people filled the courtyard of the Latino Cultural Center for the DHWI CHEF COOKOFF. The event, sponsored by Aramark Food Service, focused on cooking with a healthy twist. The event kicked off with Aramark Food Service presenting DHWI with a $25,000 check and committing to sponsoring next year’s event. For three levels of competition, each group was challenged with an ingredient that was diabetic friendly or contributed to healthy eating habits. Townview Health Science Magnet’s Tiramisu Cupcakes took the trophy for the High School Challenge where students thought out of the box to create amazing cupcakes using alternative sugars! The college team lead by Art Institute’s Ashley Warner won the avocado challenge by featuring Avocado Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Grilled Corn Salad and Avocado Mousse served with Whole Grain Sesame Thai Crackers. Chef Clint Absher’s Roasted Halibut Cheeks with Lamb Belly, Bok Choy, Swiss Chard, Flavors of Curry swayed the Celebrity Judges Darren McGrady and David Scalise, Executive Chef of the Anatole Hilton and won him the top prize in the competition. Overall, guests and sponsors were pleased with the event and eagerly anticipate another cookoff next year. How Does Our Garden Grow? Hard at work preparing the Sunny South Community Garden for a Summer Harvest High School Competitors present their dishes to celebrity judges Clinic Research Funded and Underway Two new initiatives are underway at DHWI-the Family Health Center Patient Satisfaction Survey and the Cigna Foundation Patient Activation Project. Starting in May, clinic patients will be able to offer real-time feedback on their patient experience. Service providers will give patients an iPad at the end of their visit and allow them to privately evaluate the staff, service and their overall patient experience. The survey will also capture data about access to technology in an effort to assess viability for virtual service delivery. 2 The Cigna Foundation Patient Activation project has provided funding to implement a pilot of the validated Patient Activation Measure tool (PAM). The PAM assesses the patient’s level of activation and affords us the opportunity to deliver more tailored programs and services. More targeted delivery of programs and services will improve the patient’s level of activation and empower them to become a more effective self-manager of their chronic condition(s). The DHWI Outreach team has successfully recruited gardeners for the neighborhood garden. As part of addressing the need for more affordable, fresh food, DHWI sponsors a plot in the Sunny South Community Garden. The garden was planted in March 2014 and the site is the culmination of more than a year of planning. The land, owned by the Texas State Federation of Garden Clubs, gives DHWI community members the opportunity to grow fresh produce in their own “backyard.” The garden is managed and cared for by local residents and takes a step toward addressing the limited access residents may have to fresh, affordable healthy food options in South Dallas. DHWI pays a small annual fee and is responsible for a raised garden bed. The ultimate goal for the Sunny South Community Garden is to sell extra produce to Urban Acres after sharing with local families and neighbors. Spring 2015 - DHWInsider
