The Vieux Palais de Justice de l’Assomption is the
oldest county courthouse in Quebec. Its architecture
is inspired by traditional 18th- and 19th-century styles.
It comprises the Lebourdais House, built in 1811,
the Gamelin-Woolrich House, built in 1822, and
a former Hudson’s Bay Company trading post. It
was not until 1857 that it became a courthouse.
In 1975, the then-abandoned building was classified
as a historic monument. The Corporation de l’Oasis
du Vieux Palais restored and developed this fine
heritage building, which now offers guided tours
and cultural activities such as croissants and music,
literary Sundays and murder mystery suppers.

Rosalie Cadron-Jetté (1794-1864), mother of 11
children and foundress of the Misericordia Sisters,
was born in this house, built around 1790. Here you
can learn about the daily life of Rosalie Cadron and
Jean-Marie Jetté with their first six children, around
1820, shortly before they left Lavaltrie. The period
furniture, the vegetable and flower gardens, the cross
standing by the road, the baker’s oven plus the old well
and its mechanism, will take you back 200 years.
An exhibition in one of the rooms tells about the life
and work of this exceptional woman who devoted her
life to the poor, the miserable and unmarried mothers.
She has now been proposed for sainthood.
You’ll enjoy the exhibition and workshops on the
domestic arts: weaving, quilting, arrow sashes,
braided and hooked rugs, knitting, embroidery, etc.
Home-made bread, games and amusements from the
past, handicrafts and regional products.

The second church in Berthier is the oldest in the
Joliette diocese. It was opened to worship in 1787
and declared a historic monument in 2001. Numerous
works by many renowned artists have made it a
priceless art centre. Five sculptors and one painter,
among the masters of their time, transformed the
inside of the church into a veritable museum. The
Église Sainte-Geneviève is a prime example of old
French-Canadian architecture.
