SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL – CINCINNATI 2014 ANNUAL REPORT S OCIE T Y O F ST. V IN C E N T D E PAUL – C IN C IN N ATI / 201 4 A N N UA L R E P O RT DEAR FRIEND: The statistics of services provided through St. Vincent de Paul is staggering, but these numbers only tell half the story. During our time at St. Vincent de Paul, we have both become intimately aware of the people behind those statistics: those that are receiving our services; the staff members, Vincentians and volunteers that are providing our services tirelessly for those in need; and the people like you who help us make these services possible. It is here that we find the real story of St. Vincent de Paul. With your support, in 2014 we were able to assist over 125,000 neighbors in need with their rent, utilities, food, clothing, medicine, furniture and so much more. The outcomes, however, are much more than the sum of the services and goods your gifts help make possible. We cannot measure the joy a child experiences from the realization that his new winter coat will keep him warm walking to and from school every day. We cannot quantify the relief an elderly man feels as he walks through our pantries selecting the groceries he needs to feed his extended family and himself. There is no instrument to measure the esteem gained by a man once discouraged by life’s failures who, with the support and guidance of St. Vincent de Paul staff and volunteers, now has the confidence and tools to learn new skills and provide for his family. On the pages that follow, in addition to the impressive statistics, you will also find stories of hope and second chances all made possible thanks to you. When you share God’s love with our neighbors in need, you give life to dreams once dormant. Because of YOU, hope lives! Once again, we say thank you. Mike Dunn, Executive Director Andrew Curran, President P.S. As you read the following pages, please keep in mind there are many more stories yet to be written in 2016. St. Vincent de Paul has much to accomplish for our neighbors in need, but there is no one we would rather accept the challenge with than you. So, let’s get started. Mike Dunn Executive Director Andrew Curran President 3 Because of you, over 900 beds were given to local adults and children who would otherwise be sleeping on the floor. Thanks to you, the seven St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and Donation You can lift a neighbor off the floor and onto a warm bed. Your gift of $100 to the Bob and Sylvia Rahe Mattress Fund will provide a mattress, box spring and bed rail set to someone sleeping on the floor. Centers provided more than $747,000 in free clothing, furniture and household items to neighbors in need in 2014. These items go a 4 long way to help clothe quickly growing children and make their homes feel comfortable. MAXINE Maxine never planned to have children and she didn’t, until late in her 50’s when the four young children of a relative had nowhere else to go. “I never had any doubt about taking these kids in. Where I come from, you help out. You pick up and you help out. But going from never having kids to having four is a big switch,” Maxine shared. Now, instead of planning on retirement, Maxine adjusted her entire life to care for three young boys and one little girl. The love and care in their family never runs low, but the funds often do. She had a full-time job, but needed to take a leave of absence to help the children adjust to their new lives. Their happiness is always her top priority. Maxine doesn’t like to ask for help, but when her careful budgeting still wasn’t enough to cover beds for the two youngest children she knew it was time to reach out. She came to St. Vincent de Paul. Our volunteers made a home visit to understand Maxine’s struggles and, because of your generosity, were able to bring her beds for the children and help keep her heat on in the brutally cold winter. And for the children’s first holiday season in a new home, they received a surprise Christmas gift shopping trip. “I wouldn’t have had anything for them if St. Vincent de Paul hadn’t helped me,” Maxine said. Maxine continues to adjust to life with four children. Now almost 61, the love that the children have for their “CiCi” is clear. And Maxine wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love these kids. I’m going to take care of them.” S OC I E T Y OF ST. V I NC ENT DE PAU L – CIN CIN N AT I / 201 4 AN N UAL R E P O RT S OC I E T Y OF ST. A gift of $500 will keep a family in their home. Ninety percent of families assisted with homelessness prevention are able to avoid an eviction for at least 6 months after being helped. St. Vincent de Paul is the oldest and largest private provider of Homelessness Prevention services in Cincinnati. With our network of more than 950 neighborhood-based volunteers, families are DEMETRIUS When Demetrius first came to St. Vincent de Paul, he was living in his car. With no food and very little hope for the future, he was about to give up. But through the quick work of the St. Vincent de Paul staff and volunteers, Demetrius was immediately helped with emergency housing as well as gas and clothing vouchers for his job search. Demetrius was set up with a Cincinnati Works program that helped him find full-time employment in just a few weeks. It wasn’t easy, but Demetrius found encouragement from the unwavering support of the SVDP staff. “She guided me. I had to do the work, but she worked so hard for me that I couldn’t let her down,” shared Demetrius speaking of a Social Services team member. “St. Vincent de Paul gave me hope and helped me better myself so I can take care of my family. There’s a weight lifted off of me and I feel whole again.” Demetrius and his family are now back in an apartment that he will be able to afford. And Demetrius continues to strive for more as he works through an apprenticeship for welding. Demetrius proves that with a little financial support when it’s most needed, and with the care and support of our staff, one can achieve amazing things. Thank you for helping Demetrius through the tough times and giving him the encouragement to fulfill his potential. served with homelessness prevention assistance in more than 75% of Hamilton County zip codes. Thanks to your generosity, onetime emergency rental or utility assistance was provided to 5,951 families in 2014. 7 The St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy is truly a lifeline for struggling neighbors who cannot afford their prescription For every $1 donated to the Charitable Pharmacy, we are able to provide $8 worth of medication to a neighbor in need. A gift of $500 will provide glucose testing strips for 50 patients for one month. medication. Our patients include the uninsured, people with low income who have Affordable Care Act plans with little to no prescription insurance, elderly people who face large gaps in their Medicare coverage, the chronically ill and the working poor. 8 In 2014, the Charitable Pharmacy launched the Medication Therapy Management (MTM) program to help patients manage their medications and improve health while reducing doctor visits, emergency room trips and other healthcare costs. In 2014, the MTM program helped our patients avoid an estimated $737,000 in additional healthcare costs! Thanks to you, the Charitable Pharmacy served 1,210 patients and filled 36,845 prescriptions valued at $4.5 million. DOUG Going on 40 years of marriage, Judy and Doug have faced all the ups and downs that come with life. But in the last two years, this couple has faced more than their fair share of challenges and it has been an overwhelming struggle. Judy is, as Doug puts it, “allergic to the world.” Her many allergies, including one to metal, are very dangerous and have left her in and out of the hospital for the last 15 years. Doug, on the other hand, had no health problems until just before retirement when he had heart surgery after suffering from an originally misdiagnosed condition. Doug spent 31 years in the auto business before retiring. To prepare for retirement, the couple had downsized from a large family home to a trailer home with a small lot and Doug arranged for some part-time contract work while they adjusted to their new income. But when Doug’s heart condition worsened, the many medications he needed took the couple’s entire budget. “It came down to either we eat or we get our meds,” said Judy. Understandably, buying food often seemed a better choice. At over a thousand dollars in co-pays each month, the price of paying for their prescriptions was simply out of the question. Without his medication, however, Doug’s heart condition put him in the hospital on a consistent basis over several months. The couple’s daughter, a nurse, suggested her parents visit St. Vincent de Paul after hearing recommendations from other patients. “I’ve never gotten help for anything, so it was difficult for me to reach out like this,” said Doug. “Everyone we encountered at the outreach center was so nice and pleasant. We thank God for the Pharmacy,” shared Judy. The very same day the couple visited the pharmacy for their intake they were approved and received their medication before leaving. “If I had gone any longer without my meds I wouldn’t be here. It was a matter of life or death,” said Doug. Thanks to you, this couple is no longer facing an uncertain future. They will continue to receive their life-saving medication from the St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy. S OC I E T Y OF ST. Your support of the Bob and Sylvia Rahe Mattress Fund helps us lift these neighbors off the floor and into a warm bed. In 2014, beds were given to 916 local adults and children. A special thank you to our Kids Dream Too! Program Partners: Morris Home Furnishings, Ashley Furniture Homestore, WLWT and The Cincinnati Enquirer. The Kids Dream Too! Program gives beds to local children in need. THE OZANAM CENTER FOR SERVICE LEARNING In 2014, The Ozanam Center for Service Learning hosted retreats for Confirmation students and sponsors exploring childhood poverty in Cincinnati, day-long reflections on the criminal justice system designed for adults and week-long service-immersion retreats for high school and college students. In 2014, 39 retreats were held with 329 youth and 253 adult retreatants embarking on a service learning journey. For more information about The Ozanam Center for Service Learning, visit www.svdpcincinnati.org/ ozanamcenter or contact Nick Hosmer at (513) 5628841 ext. 231 or ozanam@svdpcincinnati.org. RE-ENTRY PROGRAM HOLIDAY PROGRAMS The holiday season can be overwhelming and isolating for families who are struggling just to keep the heat on. Through a variety of 2014 holiday programs, including Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, Adopt-A-Family, Christmas Angels Toy Program, Holiday Hearts and Shop with a Bengal, you ensured hope lives on for families facing tough times. Your generosity brightened the holidays for 10,679 families. In 2014, the St. Vincent de Paul Cincinnati Council was selected to pilot a new five-year collaborative Re-entry Program for citizens returning to the community following incarceration. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development, an anti-poverty program of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, helps fund the program. Together with the Cincinnati Archdiocese and the Amos Project, St. Vincent de Paul aims to educate the community about the barriers to employment faced by returning citizens. Other focus areas include education, volunteer engagement & leadership development and basic needs assistance. The program launched in the second half of 2014, providing guidance to many returning citizens and inspiring the community through Dismas Journey presentations. We are excited to witness the power of this program in the upcoming years. To learn more about the Re-entry program and the Dismas Journey, please contact Dominic Duren at dduren@svdpcincinnati.org or (513) 562-8841 ext. 851. 11 THRIFT STORE AND DONATION CENTERS Our thrift stores provide low-cost and free clothing, household items and furniture. Items sold in the store are donated by individuals all throughout Cincinnati. “I learned to help my neighbors feel the worth and dignity they were so often deprived of, whether through home visits or walking through the food pantry with them. I will carry these experiences with me all my life.” Rob Sander, VVC ’14 in faith, friendship and service by giving deeply of themselves to their neighbors in need. In 2014, five VVC members gave 8,238 hours of service through many programs of St. Vincent de Paul. During their time of service, the VVC members touched the lives of over 14,000 individuals who came through our doors. This group also contributed 136 hours of service to our parish-based Conferences. DRIVES 12 COAT DRIVE In 2014, nearly $750,000 worth of clothing, furniture and household items were provided at no cost to neighbors in need through our voucher program. Our volunteers provide vouchers for items such as children’s clothing or a kitchen table. Vouchers are redeemed at our stores much like a gift card — recipients can select what they want and check out at registers just like any paying customer. This program gives those in need the items they need with the respect and dignity they deserve. Find a list of our seven area thrift store locations on page 14. VINCENTIAN VOLUNTEERS OF CINCINNATI Rooted in St. Vincent de Paul’s mission and tradition, Vincentian Volunteers of Cincinnati (VVC) is a faith-based, year-long, residential service program. The program provides young professionals an opportunity to grow Every winter morning, adults and children brace themselves against the cold as they travel to work and school with just a sweatshirt or tattered winter coat for warmth. Because of your generosity, the Channel 5 Cares Coat Drive provided winter coats to thousands who would have otherwise been left in the cold. In 2014, 8,000 coats were collected for struggling neighbors. Thank you to our 2014 partners: WLWT News 5, Gold Star Chili, Kemba Credit Union, City Dash, Youthland Academy, Starr Printing and participating fire departments. FOOD FROM THE HEART Throughout every neighborhood of Cincinnati, from Delhi to Anderson Township and Bridgetown to Finneytown, families are struggling to put food on the table. Every holiday season, Kroger and Fox 19 Now ask the Cincinnati community to give food from the heart for those struggling families by placing donations in food collection barrels and coin-boxes at local Kroger stores. You gave a record amount of food in 2014 and it reached hungry families in every corner of Cincinnati. In 2014, you gave 136,448 pounds of food. Thank you to our 2014 partners: Kroger and Fox 19 Now. STRIKE OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE Every summer, when children are out of school and eating more meals at home, our food pantries become a much more needed resource for struggling families trying to make ends meet. Your support of the Strike Out Hunger Food Drive at the Cincinnati Reds games gave growing children in Cincinnati the nourishing meals they needed. In 2014, Reds fans donated 27,300 pounds of food. Thank you to our 2014 partners: Cincinnati Reds and WLWT News 5. EVENTS 5K RUN/WALK In March 2014, we held the first annual St. Vincent de Paul 5K Run/Walk at Sawyer Point. The event was held in partnership with the Northern Kentucky District Council of St. Vincent de Paul. Despite a cold, rainy morning, over 700 participants of all ages enjoyed the PRESCRIPTION FORE FUN CHARITY GOLF OUTING In 2014, the St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy continued to be a last resort safety net for those who had no other way to access or afford their prescription medications due to a lack of insurance coverage or high co-pay costs. The 7th Annual Prescription Fore Fun Charity Golf Outing allowed us to fill crucial prescription medications for neighbors in need. In 2014, your support at the golf outing filled $200,000 worth of prescriptions. RETROFITTINGS For over a decade, St. Vincent de Paul has partnered with the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) to inspire the spirit of giving through fashion. RetroFittings continues to grow every year with each new theme topping the one before. Dozens of sophomore fashion students design an ensemble using just $10 worth of materials from a St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and Donation Center. The designs are showcased in a high-energy fashion show event that also includes boutique shopping, live auction, raffle baskets and more. Thank you for helping us raise nearly $170,000 in 2014. 13 GIVE GOODS OR A USED VEHICLE You can donate clothing, furniture, household items and even a vehicle to help neighbors in need. We promise to carry your legacy of hope to where it will do the most good — as our founder Blessed Frederic Ozanam said, “not in a comfortable meeting room, but rather in the cheerless attic tenement, or in the sick room…the old age home or any place where love is needed.” Please consider joining these generous donors who have included St. Vincent de Paul – Cincinnati in their estate plans.
