With the sun beating down 14 Birchwood teachers set off from the school to cycle the 100 miles through Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Norfolk. A beautiful day with little wind meant that the weather was perfect for the ride and after 10 hours the whole team arrived on the beach to enjoy the pleasures of Hunstanton. The Birchwood TLC LIVE Cycling team was formed from the school’s well-being committee and has the dual purpose of helping staff keep fit as well as being a way to raise money for the school’s chosen charities. The ride benefited the school’s International Ambassador Programme, supporting schools in India and South Africa Four committed staff, George Walker (Technology) , Claire Peet (PE) , Thomas William-Powlett (Science) and Charles Gilbank (Deputy Head) also took to their bikes for the return leg the very next day, racking up a total of 200 miles in total and 14 hours in the saddle! The next challenge is the 100 mile Wiggle Essex Explorer, using sections of the Tour de France route. Following this the plan for 2015 is to cycle from Birchwood to Paris. For more information about the International Programme visit www.birchwoodonline.co.uk/bhsiap.php or for Information on TLC LIVE online tutoring visit www.tlclive.com. Construction Students tour new development Year 9 and Year 10 BTEC Construction students were invited to visit the Marden Homes development of new luxury homes and apartments, opposite Birchwood. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to see the theory they have been learning, in a real life situation. Mr Puxley the Site Manager and his deputy Mr Smith, kindly gave a detailed tour of the whole site and answered all the students’ questions. The most popular question from the students was “how much will the penthouse flat be sold for?” We have been invited to visit again later in the project, which the students are all very excited about. Hair and Beauty students complete their course! On Thursday 22 May a group of Birchwood students completed their City & Guilds L1 Introduction to the Hair & Beauty Sector course. The course has been delivered by Mrs Jo Johnson after school on Thursdays between 4.00-6.00 pm at Forest Hall School in Stansted. Beth Staines had this to say about the course: “I have enjoyed every moment of hair and beauty! Having Jo as our teacher just made it even better! We have learnt so much and doing this will definitely help us in our future careers in whatever we do. It’s been a worthwhile experience and it’s definitely something I would urge people to do.”
