Mickey A. Gomez, CPRP ith the end of the school year and summer finally here, the City of Boca Raton presents this issue of the RECREATOR as your road map to fun. Inside these pages, you will find an array of healthy, entertaining and educational activities from which to choose. The summer season also brings with it family, fireworks, food and music of the Fourth of July in recognition of our independence. Since 1956, July has been designated as “Celebrate Recreation and Parks Month”, sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association (nrpa.org), which strives to advance parks, recreation and environmental conservation that enhance the quality of life for all people. To “celebrate” locally, the Recreation Services Department has put together many new and exciting programs and an offering of 38 different summer camps for area youth. Our goal is to touch the lives of everyone in the community and for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the many benefits of parks and recreation. Whether your interest to participate in a recreation program is for developing a skill, making new friends, staying active and healthy, or taking care of that competitive drive, this recreation guide covers a wide variety of programs and classes just for you. As you turn these pages you will see an incredible number of offerings that can be enjoyed by all members of the community and your family. Happy summer! The most common places for daytime auto burglaries are beaches, parks, gyms, and daycare. Here are a few reminders • Always lock your vehicle and roll up the windows, no matter how long you will be away. • Limit what you bring to our beaches & parks; an empty vehicle deters thieves. • Don’t leave purses, wallets, electronics, money, sunglasses, diaper bags, gym bags, or keys in your vehicle. • Please watch out for subjects who loiter, appear to be lifting door handles or are looking into windows. Report these people immediately to police by calling 561-368-6201, 911, or alert a nearby park ranger. • Thieves are always watching! Placing your belongings in the trunk or under your seat does not safeguard them. TURTLE WALK & HATCHLING RELEASE PROGRAMS & TICKETS SALES INFORMATION Did you know that last year we had RECORD HIGH sea turtle nesting in Boca Raton? This equated to a nesting loggerhead turtle being seen during 75% of our TURTLE WALK PROGRAMS! Our Turtle Walk Programs include an ecology walk on the beach, so even if we aren’t able to see a nesting turtle, we do enjoy an evening walk on the beach. While we can’t guarantee you will see a turtle on a Turtle Walk, you will see baby sea turtles scramble into the ocean during our HATCHLING RELEASE PROGRAM. Did you know Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is one of only three facilities in Florida permitted to conduct public Hatchling Release Programs? Both of these popular programs begin with a fun educational program in Gumbo Limbo’s classroom. We then go to the beach: for Turtle Walks, enjoy an ecology walk and if we are lucky, encounter a nesting loggerhead sea turtle; during Hatchling Releases, marvel as you watch baby sea turtles scurry into the surf. Please note these are hands-off programs; per our Marine Turtle Permit, only the individuals listed are permitted to touch the sea turtles. Tickets must be purchased in advance for both of these programs and tickets sell out. No tickets are sold at the door. General Public Tickets are $17 each. Existing Members of Friends of Gumbo Limbo may purchase a specific number of tickets (based on Membership Level) for $10 each. Please be aware that it is not guaranteed that you will see a nesting turtle during your program. There is no compensation provided if a nesting sea turtle is not seen during your program. Junior Lifeguard Program Summer 2014 THE RECREATOR SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Sea Bathers Eruption (Sea Lice) What is it? Ocean bathers report red welts and blotches, which are concentrated under the swimsuit and other parts of the body after swimming in the ocean. Itching and redness usually occur several hours after ocean bathing. Some experience a slight “prickling” sensation while they are in the water. This occurs mostly from April to July. Symptoms: Itching -- usually lasts 2-4 days, but it can last as long as 2 weeks. Some people have more severe reactions, including headache, fever, nausea and infected blisters. Children may develop high fever. Prevention: Make sure you change out of your bathing suit before showering. This may reduce your risk for sea bather’s eruption by half. Treatment: An oral antihistamine may help to relieve the itching. Also, an over-the-counter topical 1% cortisone cream or sting aid may be helpful. With severe reactions or complications, call your physician immediately.
