Canines. Thank you for your help with submitting articles to Critter Magazine and your volunteer work for High Country transports! Rabies vaccines are important, even for inside pets! Growing up, my parents always warned me with stories about the dreaded raccoon staggering down the street, foaming at the mouth and freshly infected with rabies. Not only could the animal bite me but knowing that the animal was suffering made it even sadder. Now that I am older I worry about my own animals getting infected by rabies. Whether domesticated or not, any animal can become infected. Some people may decline to vaccinate their indoor pet, thinking they are protected. They are not! Vaccinating for rabies is required by law, since rabid squirrels or raccoons have even been known to climb down chimneys. Chances of this happening are slim, but if it did, your household pet would be held in strict quarantine for six months or possibly even euthanized. Raccoons, squirrels, skunks and other wild animals should run from you, especially in the daytime. If any wild animal is walking towards you in the daylight, one should assume it has rabies. If you have a concern about an animal, whether wild, domesticated or feral, call Animal Control. If you are ever bitten by a rabid animal, wash the wound with warm soapy water and report the bite to Animal Control, as well as the Poison Control Center, the Health Department, and of course your physician. Contact your local veterinarian or animal control to get your pet up-to-date on their rabies vaccines. We should not be scared of the disease but work to prevent it. Don’t stop to look for your pets. Leave that to your parents and the professionals. Tell how many pets you have and where they are in your home. But what of you’re not home when there’s an emergency? You can still let emergency workers know who’s inside. Fill in the form above. Then color the rest if it using bright, eye-catching colors. Laminate the form or cover it in clear contact paper. Then place it in a window or on an outside door at home. If you don’t have a pet, color and give this form to a neighbor. PAGE 12 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2013 2012 Euthansia Statistics Released … Don’t Shop, Adopt a Shelter Pet! Statistics are from the 2012 FY Public Animal Shelter Report http://www.ncagr.gov/vet/aws/Fix/index.htm NCDA&CS Veterinary Division of Animal Welfare The 2012 NC Animal Shelter Euthanasia Statistics are better for High Country shelters compared to 2011 stats (some shelters were at 93%+ in 2011), but some regions still have very high euthanasia rates at shelters because of the high number of incoming animals. Many times the lack of space in animal shelters (and available cages/dog runs) is a huge reason they have to euthanize so many. Shelters are not required to hold owner surrender animals, puppies under 8 weeks old, or injured animals. Any animal picked up as a stray is held for 3 days then put up for adoption or euthanized depending on space available and if its deemed an adoptable pet. Animals surrendered voluntarily do not have any type of required holding period and may be euthanized on intake if no space is available in the shelter. **Note: any shelter whether "no kill" status or not has to euthanize animals. Shelters have to euthanize animals that aren't adoptable, aggressive or feral. They also provide humane euthanasia for local citizens that cannot afford their vet bill to have a senior or injured pet put to sleep. "No Kill" shelters do not euthanize adoptable animals but still have to put animals to sleep for the reasons listed. The good news is many shelters are contacting rescue groups to receive help. All shelters struggle with space issues and cannot hold dogs or cats longer than a few days in many areas. Please consider adopting from an animal shelter to save a life and encourage community members and family to be responsible owners and to spay/neuter their pets to reduce overpopulation issues. Contact us at (828) 773-9112 or crittermagazineboone@gmail.com to find out ways you can volunteer in your area to improve the lives of cats and dogs that end up in shelters. Also make sure all personal pets have an ID tag or microchip in case they are ever lost and end up in a animal shelter. 90% of lost animals are never reclaimed because they do not have an ID tag.
