Rescuing Maui’s Abandoned and Neglected Pets Maui Humane Society’s (MHS) Field Operations team is made up of highly trained, dedicated professionals who are committed to public safety and animal welfare. Rescuing animals from neglectful or cruel situations, supplying food and water to those in need, and assuring the animals of Maui are safe, is just the beginning of what these officers do. They go out into the community 7 days a week, acting not only as law enforcers, but also as educators and facilitators to pet owners all over the island. Here at MHS, we believe that diligent public outreach efforts can effectively prevent most issues of animal neglect and cruelty. MHS Field Officers Enforce Maui County Animal Laws and Regulations It is up to our Field Officers to uphold and enforce animal protection laws. Pursuant to state and county statutes, our officers have the same authority and powers as a police officer to issue citations in the event that Maui County animal regulations and laws are violated. These laws include but are not limited to licensing laws, restraint laws, excessive barking laws, and laws to protect animals from abuse and neglect. We also work with MPD on laws that prohibit dog and cock-fighting. For a full outline of the laws and regulations our Field Officers enforce, please visit the “Legislation” section on our website. MHS Field Ops Team Helps Lost Pets Find Home One of the responsibilities of Maui Humane Society’s Field Operations department is providing the community with animal management services. This means that in addition to enforcing Maui County law, it is their responsibility to collect stray, trapped or loose companion animals that are reported around the island. (continued on page 4) 1 Message from our CEO By Jocelyn Bouchard, CAWA This year the Westminster Dog Show raised eyebrows for cutting ties with its longtime sponsor Pedigree in part because of Pedigree’s commercials featuring sad-eyed mutts up for adoption. “We want people to think of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show as a celebration of the dogs in our lives,” said David Frei, the club’s director of communications. “Show me an ad with a dog with a smile; don’t try to shame me.” The kennel club had expressed its concerns to Pedigree, he said, adding, “We told them that, and they ignored us.” Please help us continue the critical programs and services we I have personally heard a lot of my friends comment how they are provide for our community. We are facing serious financial tired or increasingly offended by these depressing ads. While our challenges and need your help now more than ever before. This reality is still so very sad, it might be time for ads that convey a is because the economy over the past few years has affected happier image to motivate people to come to a shelter for a positive Maui County’s ability to fund the total amount needed to fulfill experience and to find a new best friend that will make their lives our animal management contract. MHS has been utilizing our happier. We can only do so much negative publicity or share so much own monies to ‘fund the gap’ in order to continue the services so of our reality before we lose people. People want to support success important to our community. and feel good about it as evidenced by how happy people are to say Below are items that will greatly help us reduce our operating costs and share that they adopted a pet, supported a successful event, etc. and do more for the animals. Please consider sending an extra Or as a colleague of mine put it; “Let’s just not horrify the public so donation or gifting an item or two from the list below. If you own much that they can’t even bear the thought of walking into a shelter a business or have special skills or services and can offer assistance to possibly adopt a pet one day.” for special projects, please call Lindsey at (808) 877-3680 ext 32. WISH LIST Studies show that the public perception of shelter pets is clouded by fear and uncertainty. If we want to change people’s behavior about adoption we have to challenge their assumptions about shelter pets. We found that many people mistakenly fear that shelter pets are “damaged goods” and did something wrong to wind up in the shelter…. or that potential adopters are unsure of what to expect when they visit a shelter (it might be depressing, the adoption process too cumbersome, etc). No gift is too small and every penny helps! Thank you so much for your continued support. PROJECTS: Refinishing our dog kennels Completing our irrigation system ANIMAL CARE SUPPLIES: Large - Kuranda Pet Beds (from www.Kuranda.com) Easy Walk Harnesses - all sizes (for Dog Walking Program) Jerky Treats Enrichment items for little Critters – small animal houses, water bottles, toys, bowls Canned Food for kittens, puppies, cats and dogs Guinea Pig Fortified Pellet Food Rabbit Pellet Food Towels Adoptions are a very critical part of a shelter like ours. Spay/ Neuter, while still the most important factors in controlling the pet population will not help the animals in our shelter today, tomorrow and even next week. Until the population of companion animals is more appropriate to the amount of homes available we need people to come to our shelters and adopt a shelter pet. And the truth is, our hardworking staff takes great care of the pets at our shelter! If we feel that it is necessary to tell about a particular animal’s rough start, we will—and then show a happy photo of it in its new, positive environment. After being left in our overnight holding kennels back in June of 2011, she spent 225 days at the shelter. She was adopted by an amazing family in January and now lives in Canada. Bettina was adopted by a family that adopts cats from the shelter several times a year, and then helps them find new forever homes on the mainland. After being re-homed in Vancouver, Bettina had a run-in with two dogs and almost did not make it. When the HessMckay family found out about Bettina’s accident they took her back into their home and have been nursing her back to health. After a few surgeries, many sleepless nights, and a few months of recovery, Bettina is as good as new. She is spending her days playing with her many hanai siblings and enjoying life. Hopefully, Bettina’s future will be as trouble free as she deserves it to be. 3 As an open admission shelter, Maui Humane Society must accept every abandoned or unwanted animal that comes to our door. We receive an average of 24 live animals per day, every day of the year. We do our best to get as many pets reunited or adopted as we can, but the number of homes available to orphaned pets here is limited because we are an island community. We partner whenever possible with local animal groups on Maui and other shelters on neighbor islands, such as Oahu, for transfers. We are finding that our current partners are not able to take as many of our pets as they have in the past. All of us are overflowing, adoption trends are not increasing, and the intake of animals does not cease – even through extensive efforts to encourage spay-neuter. When our partner agencies cannot take our pets, we are out of options. Though we have been transferring pets locally for some time, we recently designed a new transfer program called Wings of Aloha in order to get animals out of the Hawaiian Islands altogether and into mainland shelters or rescues for guaranteed adoption. Wings of Aloha is a viable way to reduce the number of pets needing homes without having to euthanize for space and we are getting ever closer to our goal of never putting down another healthy or treatable pet. We are beginning to line up partner destination shelters, but each dog, puppy, cat or kitten, transferred from our island must go by air, which means the expenses are higher and logistics are more for this program than those of shelters on the mainland. In order to relocate our goal of at least 500 pets per year, we need to raise $345,000. We have a long way to go to meet that goal (so far we have raised $10,000), but are happy to fly as many as we can into the arms of adoption-guarantee shelters. We feel that this program will improve quality of life for the pets we transfer, but it will also improve the chances for the wonderful pets remaining at our shelter to find loving, forever homes here on Maui. If you are interested to contribute to Wings of Aloha, please go to our website or call (808) 877-3680 ext 34. Help our furry Maui ambassadors find their forever families and help us save more lives! For more information on the Wings of Aloha Program, please visit our website or call (808) 877-3680 ext 17. On the Beat - Cover Story ...continued from page 1 Once collected, the animal is either brought to the shelter, or when possible, returned to its owner right away. Our Field Officers make a diligent effort to return pets to their owners leaving valuable space open at MHS, conserving resources, and giving officers a chance to work with the public. All MHS officers urge pet owners to provide their pets with as much identification as possible, so that they can be easily and quickly returned home in the event that they become lost. Dog licenses are mandatory by law, and can be obtained either through the DMV or Maui Humane Society. Your dog or cat should wear their license and identification tags at all times. MHS also suggests micro-chipping or tattooing your pet as a means of permanent identification. MHS Field Officers Help People Become Better Pet Owners Animal welfare is a delicate subject, involving situations that can be very sensitive and emotionally stressful.. Our field officers handle their daily duties with a perseverance and grace that can only come from being true animal lovers, and a sense of understanding that can only come from a true public servant. They are driven to cultivate kindness and compassion toward our companion animals, out of a desire for seeing Maui’s pets treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. “You’re making a difference in an animal’s life, you know?” says Officer Redd, who has worked as a field officer for over 18 years, when asked what motivates her to pursue this line of work. “This animal that you came and found in these terrible conditions is now living ten times better, and you made that difference. Sometimes it’s like babysitting and you have to check [with the owner] a hundred times to make sure they’re getting it. Other people, if you give them enough rope and let them go, they soar. One of the things that has really enlightened me is that people I have cited in the past for cruelty will actually come to me and report when they see something… they’ve been educated enough to realize what is right and what is wrong, and said ‘Hey, there’s something going on here and we respect you guys, we know that you did a job and you weren’t just being mean to us and pushing your weight around’… that’s a pretty good high for me.” Animal Protection is a Community Effort Last year, our Field Operations department responded to 8,874 calls for assistance with anything from loose dogs and lost or found animals to feral cat pickups, dog bites and cruelty/neglect reports. What many don’t realize is that our Field Operations department, which serves the entire island, consists of a small team of only 6 officers, 1 supervisor, 1 director, and 1 dispatcher. While it may be the duty of our Field Officers to enforce Maui County’s laws and provide animal management services, it is important to remember that they simply can’t do it alone. Whenever the opportunity presents itself, share what you know about responsible pet ownership and encourage others to do the same. “I would say about 99 percent of the time it is an educational type of situation.” Officer Redd says. “Education is the smart way to go.” Knowledge is a powerful tool, and when it is shared it can transform a community. “We’re finding better results with educating people. It’s amazing how many people don’t realize that they’re being neglectful and need to be educated - but now it’s our daily routine.” Maui Humane Society urges animal lovers to be model citizens - obey Maui County animal laws, and call and give a detailed report when an animal is in distress or danger. Only with our whole community working together will we be able to make the changes needed to ensure there are no more neglected, abused or lost animals on Maui… help us work toward this goal! Together, we’ll continue to make a difference in the lives of Maui’s pets! 4 Volunteer Spotlight: Jeanie Williams For more than ten years, Jeanie Williams has volunteered in our veterinary department here at Maui Humane Society. A full time ICU nurse, Jeanie makes sure to keep every Friday open so she is able to assist our staff with some of the thousands of surgeries they perform every year – she never misses a Friday, something our staff appreciates tremendously. Dr. Kim, Director of Veterinary Services at MHS, and the rest of the MHS vet staff, count on Jeanie’s dependability, capability, and wonderful attitude. Assisting with paperwork, data-entry, and surgery prep, Jeanie (and other vet staff volunteers) (L to R) Lori Coad, MHS Vet Tech, and Jeanie Williams, allows our staff to perform even more surgeries every day – this means more animals are SuperStar Vet Staff Volunteer, prep a cat for surgery. spayed and neutered, a benefit for the animals, pet owners, and our community. Besides helping every week in our shelter, Jeanie is also a volunteer outside the shelter – she’s a pet foster parent. Jeanie is able to foster puppies, kittens, and animals with injuries or requiring medication. She to the following donors for has been fostering orphaned animals since before we started a formal foster program, and has been their financial support this year: going strong for years. She even had a little kitten house built on her property for the sole purpose of Hawaii Hotel and Lodging Association fostering for Maui Humane Society. Jeanie regularly Paul Joel Freeman Trust has a full house, often bringing in one set of foster Sue D. Cooley babies on Friday morning (when they’re ready to Marin Community Foundation be adopted), and taking another litter home with ASPCA her Friday afternoon. Because of her set up with Menu Foods Limited the kitten house, she is one of the few foster parent Maui Brewing Co. volunteers that is willing to take home moms that Catholic Community Foundation are nursing their kittens, or kittens that are sick and need medication. MAHALO Hawaii Inaugural 2010 Jeanie is also a strong advocate of MHS, educating her friends and co-workers about spaying Buzz’s Wharf and neutering, and always retaining a positive attitude. All of the staff at MHS who have the Hawaii Community Foundation pleasure of working with Jeanie have commented on how dedicated, generous, and happy The Seattle Foundation she always is. Marina Treese, our newest vet staff member, is genuinely grateful for Jeanie’s Commercial Properties of Maui Management support and insight throughout her surgery training – Jeanie helped Marina transition James MacPherson smoothly into the highly efficient and effective MHS surgery team. Aluli Public Relations Jeanie, we hope you know how much we all appreciate your warmth, cheer, and wonderful heart… Mahalo nui loa for all that you do, and the many lives you’ve saved. Tatiana Botton David Easly Kenneth and Maria Zielinski Ali’i Kula Lavender Hawaii Pacific Area Combined Federal Campaign PY HAP NG I END BRADLEY Now lives: Pennsylvania Bradley came to us in January, left in our holding kennels with no note. How his story began, no one knows, but we do know how it ends! Bradley was here at the shelter for 40 days before a loving couple noticed him. Standing out in a kennel full of other cute dogs, they saw something in Bradley that reminded them of their dogs at home. Unable to just walk away, they decided that Bradley would have to come home with them - all the way to Pennsylvania! He now spends his days playing in the snow, cuddling on the couch with his new canine brethren and loving his new feline friends. 5 Robert McCleary Keri and Don Mehling Eileen Burton Rebecca Kapustay Marilyn Ericson Cheryl Iseberg Drs. This May will mark the start of the 15th annual Calendar Contest, and we couldn’t be more excited! The MHS Calendar not only reminds us of the bonds that we cherish with our own pets; it also represents the vital connection that exists between Island residents and the animals of Maui Humane Society. Each year, we are delighted with the outpour of support from our community, as pet owners submit adorable — and often hilarious – photographs of their pets. We see poi dogs and purebreds, feral cats and foster kittens. (In fact, everything from guinea pigs and mynah birds to rabbits and tortoises have graced the pages of our annual calendar!) Local businesses often show their support by contibuting as advertising partners and offering special discounts to calendar purchasers. Still others rally funds through voting, consigning and purchasing calendars. The combination of these efforts serves as a powerful and heart-warming representation of what our animal friends mean to the community of Maui. To all who have participated in the past, Mahalo. Your goodwill and enthusiasm have helped to shape this tradition and celebrate the cause of caring for animals on our island. If you are interested in participating in the 2013 MHS Calendar Contest, whether by submitting a photo, becoming an advertising partner, voting or purchasing a calendar, we invite you to visit our website. Please join us in this annual tradition of community partnership as we all work toward for the best cause of all – the animals. VALENTINO Now Lives: Maui, HI Valentino (formerly known as Royce) came to us as a stray from Kihei at the beginning of February. After just 2 weeks at the shelter he and a kind woman fell in love. He was scooped up and named Valentino, because he’s such a lover boy. He continues to live up to it every minute. Valentino now spends his days playing with his brother Kipa (another MHS Alumni). He spends his nights cuddled up in bed with his owner. Always ready for fun, Valentino loves to play keep away with his brother’s toys and runs to his heart’s desire. His new family said, “You may think he’s the lucky one, but he is such a joy to have that we feel that we’re the lucky ones.” 7 PY HAP NG I END JOIN US ONLINE! Wanna Volunteer? PY P A H NG I D EN We have many wonderful opportunities for people to volunteer at the shelter and in the community, including: GINGER Now Lives: Haiku, Maui Ginger came to us in a sorry state in early March. Her owner brought her to us when he found her injured after being chased off the property by a dog that was not a fan of hers. With an eye that was damaged and a very infected tooth, this 10 year old kitty was in bad shape. Thanks to donations to the Hope Fund, she was able to get the surgery needed to remove her eye and bad tooth. Not even one day after her procedure Ginger was up and around and ready for love and affection. Ginger is a warm and comforting presence to be around. She now spends her days in Haiku with her new owner, where she gets to share her love with everyone she meets and shows them just how resilient pets with adversities can be! 8 Administrative Assistance Adoption Assistance Animal Care and Dog Walking Disaster and Emergency Response Education and Outreach Facilities and Gardening Fundraising and Special Events Veterinary Assistance Foster Program For more information about how you can get involved, contact Jennifer at: (808) 877 - 3680 x 14 Volunteer@MauiHumaneSociety.org
