So many people give so much of their time and expertise to make Blaston the enjoyable and successful Show that it has become. Led by an enthusiastic, hard working and knowledgeable Board of Directors backed up by the individual Section Heads, on the day itself there are well over 100 people involved in laying on a Show that always seems to fulfil our expectations. We are grateful to every one of them for the time they so generously give to this successful venture, and I will hope to see even more of you than perhaps I was able to last year. improvement of the 2015 and future shows. It is uplifting to be part of an organisation which gives pleasure to many, raises notable funds for local charities, and is run by an always cheerful and effective group of helpers and officials. You will find not only are all your old favourites back again at Blaston in 2015, but there are quite a number of exciting new improvements, headed by an enhanced livestock area for the Cattle and Sheep sections, which have proved increasingly popular in recent years. I would particularly like to thank our Sponsors for their very considerable generosity, and to welcome our Members to a Show of which they remain an important and much appreciated part. I am sure that you will all find much to entertain you at Blaston in 2015, and that this year’s Show will be as popular and successful as those of recent years. I trust that you will return home afterwards with happy memories of the Show and satisfaction for a job well done by everyone involved, whether organiser or visitor. The Show not only gives great enjoyment and much please to so many people who love all the activities in the countryside of South Leicestershire, but is a significant fundraiser for many local charities, led this year by Headway (of Leicester), a charity which promotes understanding of and significant help for all those suffering from brain injury – a very worthy cause. Last year the Society was able to donate some £7,000 to local charitable causes, and in a profitable year, still plough back significant funds towards the development and Joe Cowen President 5 6 Chairman’s Welcome On behalf of the Show Trustees and everyone who has worked so hard to organise our 2015 event, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 57th Annual Blaston Show, we all hope you have a wonderful day, helping us raise funds to support local charities and in particular, this year’s main charity, the Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland Headway Organisation. Headway is a voluntary organisation specialising in providing support and services to adults with an acquired or traumatic brain injury and their families. and traders. Both our sheep and cattle sections recorded a 20% increase in entries in 2014 - a fantastic achievement entirely due to the hard work and dedication of Section heads and their teams. Blaston Show could not survive without the support of many individuals and organisations. On behalf of the Trustees I’d like to take this opportunity to offer our thanks to everyone involved for their year on year commitment to the Show. Even a small one day Show takes an immense amount of organisation. My thanks to my fellow Trustees and officers of the Society, particularly our Show Director, Will Young and Show Secretary, Jo Costello, for their brilliant ideas and hard work over the whole year to plan the Show and ensure everything is in place on the day. My own three year term as your Chairman comes to an end this year; it has been a privilege to lead a remarkable team. Blaston Show is a very special event in the Welland Valley, my best wishes to you all for its continuing success. As Trustees we rely on the generosity of our landlords, Clare Clarke, Rob and Jo Miller, Charles Thompson and Anthony and Kate Smith to hold the Show on their land. Do please respect their kindness, use litter bins provided and remember that the grass in the field is grazed again once the Show is over. We have a huge and dedicated team, Section Heads, their Judges and Stewards, the team on the gate and in the car park, the bar, the Members Area team and so many more, sincere thanks to you all None of this could be achieved without the support of many other local organisations and individuals. Your Show Trustees place immense importance on our long standing partnership with the Harborough 2012 Lions Club, Welland Valley Rotary Club and Young Farmers Clubs – we are delighted that Medbourne Cricket Club and Stoneygate Rugby Minis coaches and parents will be joining our stewarding team this year. As ever, all these organisations will feature strongly among our charitable donations. Most of all, may I thank you for supporting the show, we hope you enjoy your day and look forward to welcoming you back for many years ahead. We continue the now well established classic car run, this year starting from The Langton Garden Centre, whose entrants will meander through the Welland Valley to the Show and we are expecting a significant turnout of vintage tractors of all colours, shapes and sizes to rival many local events. At the time of going to print we are expecting good entries across all sections and would encourage you to enter whatever your level. I would just like to thank everyone involved in creating and supporting the 2015 Blaston Show and wish you all a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable day. I look forward to seeing you all there, whether competing or socialising and would encourage you to bring your friends and family to sample this rural spectacle which is Blaston Show. After a late spring, it feels as if the run up to this year’s Show is shorter and more challenging than ever. In a difficult agricultural climate with low commodity prices, the importance of our rural community is as important as ever and the Show provides everyone an opportunity to build relationships and enjoy friendships. The organising committee has as always been busy putting this year’s event together, new blood, fresh ideas and local connections remain key. The Modern Farming Area is under new stewardship as is the Cattle Section. The efforts of all of our helpers and good will of local businesses continue to provide the platform for this unique event. We hope to build on the success of last year’s Show, with new attractions including working Sled Dogs, Falconry Display, Modern Farming Display, Spitfire Fly Past and all in addition to our well established attractions including, horse and pony sections, family dog show, fox hound parades, terrier racing, trade stands and catering. These will all be open from 8.00am. We are also grateful to the Women’s Institute (WI) for their support in running the Refreshment Tent that will be situated in the main marquee. 13 Blaston Show Rules Conditions of Class Entry to All Competitions: As a competitor you agree to the conditions in the schedule and to abide by the decision of the judges and not to hold the Secretary or Trustees in any way responsible for any loss, injury or damage whatsoever occurring on the showground during the day of the show. You understand that it is a requirement of the Society that all competitors have up-to-date public liability insurance and that you can provide evidence that you hold up to date public liability insurance. This can be obtained from NFU Mutual, Market Harborough Office. 1. All persons entering this show in any capacity do so at their own risk, and the Society will not be responsible under any circumstances for any loss, damage or injury arising from any accident occurring upon the Showground or Car Park, whether personal or otherwise. The Society and its officers shall not be responsible for any accident, damage or loss, however caused that may occur to any exhibitor or his servant or to any animal, article or property exhibited or brought to the showground by him. Each exhibitor shall indemnify the Society from and against all actions suits expenses or claims on account or in respect of any such damage or injury however caused. 5. Correctly secured British Standard Skull Caps/ Riding hats that meet current safety standards MUST be worn by riders at all times when mounted. 2. All animals entering this show in any capacity do so at their owners risk, and the Committee will not be responsible under any circumstances for any loss, damage or injury arising from any accident occurring upon the Showground or Car Park. 10.The Society reserves the right for judges, stewards, honorary veterinary surgeon or officers of the Society to remove any animal, competitor, vehicle or machinery from the show without providing reasons, that decision will be final and must be complied with forthwith. 3. Any protest or objection must be lodged with the Hon. Secretary before the close of the Show accompanied by a £20 deposit. In the event of the protest or objection being overruled by the Society, the deposit will be forfeited. 11.All dogs must be kept on leads and under proper control at all times and dog mess should be collected and disposed of in the bins provided. 6. Body protectors may be worn and are strongly recommended. 7. In extreme weather conditions a Judge may use his discretion regarding coats on the day. 8. First aid cover for every equine entrant must be paid at point of class entry. 9. Once an entry is made there will be no refund of entry fee. 12.Dog Show and Craft Exhibitors are required to pay full admission to Showground. 4. Entries will not be accepted unless accompanied by the appropriate fees. 13.All motor vehicles parked at owners’ risk. 14 14.All Cup/Trophies remain the property of the Blaston and District Agricultural Show Society. A £25 refundable deposit is required for the acceptance of a cup/trophy which must be returned in good condition and cleaned, to the show secretary by 31st May of the following year they were presented 20.ALL VEHICLES ON THE SHOWGROUND MUST LEFT SAFE AND SECURE, WITH HANDBRAKE APPLIED AND WITH NO MATERIAL DEFECTS. THE ORGANISERS RESEVE THE RIGHT FOR JUDGES, STEWARDS OR OFFICERS TO REMOVE OR REQUIRE TO MAKE SAFE ANY VEHICLE ON THE SHOWGROUND, WITHOUT PROVIDING REASONS, THAT DECISION WILL BE FINAL AND MUST BE COMPLIED WITH FORTHWITH. 15.All equine entries must enter the showground through the designated horse box parking area through the indicated gate and use the designated horse walk at all times. 21.THE JUDGES AND STEWARDS DECISION IS FINAL. 16.No animals should be exercised in the showground or horse box park, except within the designated collecting rings. 22.EMERGENCY PROCEDURE – In the event of a major incident during the Show the emergency procedure will be put into effect and the public and exhibitors shall be informed and directed through the public address system and show stewards. 17.Piped water supplied on the Showground is not for human consumption, potable water is available to be purchased at the main bar. 18.Any vehicles accompanying horse boxes and trailers must pay admission - £15 per vehicle. 19.ANY VEHICLE ON THE SHOWGROUND MUST ONLY BE OPERATED BY A PERSON(S) WHO HOLDS AN APPROPRAITE LICENCE FOR THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION. THIS INCLUDES ALL MODERN, VINTAGE AND CLASSIC CARS AND AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY. The Show Organising Committee has done everything possible to make your day at Blaston Show as pleasant and safe as possible. All cups and trophies are held for ONE year and a £20 deposit is required. This show is affiliated to Equifest, taking place at the East of England Showground on the 12th 16th August 2015. Main Ring: 8.30 a.m. Horse & Pony Open Jumping Incorporating BS Club Jumping (open to unaffiliated riders and BS Club members) Classes start at 8.30am Entry fee: £6.00 · 1st £10 · 2nd £8 · 3rd £6 Rosettes: to 6th place These classes will be run under British Show Jumping rules. For any horse/rider, pony/rider combination without a registered result in National Amateur 90cm., British Novice, Pony British Novice, Stepping Stones and above in the last 3 years. Competitors can register as Club Members up to 7 days after the competition and regain points won. Horses and ponies will be split if there are more than 15 starters. Children can ride horses from the beginning of the calendar year in which they are 12. Class 1: THE BLASTON NOVICE CUP 80 cm Horse and Pony Open Jumping Incorporating BS Club Jumping. Height 80cm. Time limit of 2 minutes allowed in the first section of the course. Table/Speed single Phase 325mpm. Regional points will be awarded in Riders own league. Class 2: THE BLASTON SHOW ACCUMULATOR CUP 90cm Horse and Pony Open Jumping Incorporating BS Club Jumping. Height 90cm. Time limit of 2 minutes allowed in the first section of the course. Table/Speed Single phase 325mpm. Regional points will be awarded in Riders own league. Class 3: THE BLASTON SHOW GRAND PRIX CUP 1.00m Horse and Pony Open Jumping incorporating BS Club Jumping. Height 1.00m. Time limit of 2 minutes allowed in the first section of the course. Table/Speed single phase/325mpm. Regional points will be awarded in Riders own league. 23 Faults • • • • • • • • Knock down -4 faults First refusal -4 faults Second refusal -4 faults Third refusal - Elimination A fall anywhere on the course - Elimination 1st- 12 points, 2nd- 10 points, 3rd- 8 points, 4th - 6 points, 5th- 4points, 6th - 3points 3 points will be awarded to all double clears PLEASE NOTE: Horses/ ponies may only enter ONCE in any one competition. Skull Caps to standard PAS105 or BN1384 must be worn. The judge’s decision is final BUT objections can be lodged with a £20 deposit to the Secretary within 15 minutes of the Class closing. Points will be awarded to those competitors who are BS Club members in line with BS Rules and Regulations. Farm businesses in the UK adhere to some of the highest standards in the world in terms of food safety, animal welfare, environmental protection, habitat management and staff equality. UK farmers also produce over 70% of food that can be grown in this country and will play a leading role in producing ‘green’ energy from plant products and other by-products in the future. In order for future generations to benefit from domestically grown, safe, fresh and healthy food and enable them to enjoy the stunning landscape created by farmers, it is important that farming and food production is understood by everyone. The original founders were Bill and Molly Jackson, Dick and Clare Clarke and Joyce Noble. The Show has always been held in the vicinity of Blaston village and has been run from just 6 sites in its 52 year lifespan. It has been held at its current site on Blaston Road near to Slawston since 1997. The first ever Blaston Show was held the same year and has been an annual event ever since, only having to be cancelled twice in its history in both instances due to Foot and Mouth disease. The show originally started as a small gymkhana competition and later incorporated donkeys. As the show grew and became more popular, show classes of horses and ponies, sheep, goats, cattle and dogs developed. The Society was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee in 2009 to coincide with the introduction of an all new management team. In 2011, the Society was successful with an application to the Charity Commission to achieve formal Charity status for the organisation.
