2015 Annual Report - Lawrence Public Library Foundation
Lawrence Public Library Foundaon Annual Report 2015 Lawrence Public Library Foundation | 2015 ANNUAL REPORT For fiscal year ended December 31, 2015 Our Mission The mission of the Lawrence Public Library Foundation is to provide long term, stable support for the resources and services the library needs to meet the evolving educational, recreational, and informational needs and interests of the community. The Lawrence Public Library Foundation has three primary goals: • • • Build and maintain an endowment fund to benefit the Lawrence Public Library. Raise funds for Lawrence Public Library capital needs. Seek out grant funding for the Lawrence Public Library. The Lawrence Public Library Foundation is a not-for-profit 501c3 Kansas corporation, with its offices located at 707 Vermont Street, Lawrence, Kansas 66044-2371. We commenced operations in 1997. Our telephone number is (785) 843-3833, extension 131 and our web address is www.lawrencepubliclibraryfoundation.org. Directors do not receive any compensation for serving on the Board of Directors. As of December 31, 2015, the Library Foundation was not party to any material pending legal proceedings. Letter from the Chair April 25, 2016 To the Lawrence Public Library Board of Trustees: The Lawrence Public Library Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to report the progress we have achieved in the past year. Building on the momentum of opening our beautiful new library, the Library Foundation experienced another successful year of fundraising in 2015. Lawrence loves and trusts its public library and people are using it in huge numbers – nearly 700,000 visited in 2015! In addition, more than 51,000 people attended library programs and 3,400 meetings were held at the library. Given this increased demand for library services, private funding is more important than ever. The Lawrence Public Library Foundation is honored to help the library provide the best possible programs and services to this community. While private funding cannot replace strong public funding of the Lawrence Public Library, it is clear that the library cannot rely solely on tax dollars to give children, teens, and adults full access to the information and services they need. More than ever, concerned, civic-minded citizens who are committed to keeping the library strong and vibrant have stepped up to support their Lawrence Public Library with private donations. Here are just a few 2015 Library Foundation highlights: • • • • • • The Foundation contributed a total of $97,987 to library programs in 2015. These private gifts supported projects ranging from storytelling furniture in the Readers Theater to a new Music Storytellers Series featuring world class musicians sharing the stories that influence their music. The Second Annual Ross and Marianna Beach Author Series was held on October 15, 2015. Karen Russell, award-winning author of Swamplandia and Vampires in the Lemon Grove presented an unforgettable evening of humor and stories. The Foundation brought back Caddy Stacks in 2015.This popular family-friendly fundraiser features an 18-hole mini golf course winding its way throughout the library. The event raised $15,000 for the library’s summer reading program. The Library Foundation was honored to receive a $230,000 bequest from the estate of KU Librarian Ann Hyde. This generous gift was invested in the Foundation’s unrestricted endowment to provide important supplemental funding to the library for years to come. The Foundation’s endowment at Douglas County Community Foundation reached new heights in 2015.Total endowed funds stood at $1,655,623 as of December 31, a 41% increase from 2014 levels. The Library Foundation’s total income in 2015 was $681,308. The Foundation board is honored to support Lawrence Public Library. Our board includes representatives from both the Lawrence Public Library Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library. The link to these two groups is vital to our success and we look forward to continued collaborations. Finally, our achievements to date could not have been possible without the invaluable contributions of the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Executive Director. I have enjoyed serving as Chair of the Lawrence Public Library Foundation this past year. Working and volunteering with such talented and dedicated individuals is an honor.
