A CHALLENGE FOR NOVEMBER
At the time that this newsletter will hit your hands,
we will be between Sunday, October 25, when we
handed to our third graders their own copies of
God’s Word – the Bible; and November 2nd, which
begins a new month (obviously).
There are companies that will host a “bring your
child to work day.” There are schools that will host
a “bring your parent to lunch day.” November 2014, in your family
at St. John’s, is going to be “BRING YOUR BIBLE TO CHURCH”
month. In thinking about this theme, I can’t help but think of a couple of songs, one historical, and one relatively new. “God’s Word
Is Our Great Heritage,” and “Thy Word Is a Lamp Unto My Feet” are
the two that come to mind.
In a time when truth seems harder and harder to come by
and Satan continues to work – maybe even harder than ever in this
ever changing world of ours – it seems right that we focus where
we need to focus: in and on God’s Word. His Word is the foundation for our faith, as in His Word we are told of all that God has
done to make us right with Him through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, and we are taught what it means to live as His children – how to Be His Church!
While the details of what this means during our services are
still being worked out, what I can tell you is that you will be instructed each Sunday to “turn in your Bibles” to a specific section of
God’s Word that will be studied, taught, and applied on that day.
The logic or thought process behind this emphasis is this: as we
have just given our third graders God’s Word, ought we not model
to our young brothers and sisters in Christ just how important being
in God’s Word is for us as adults?
During October we looked at some difficult sections in
God’s Word. There are times in reading the Bible that teaching and

learning is a good approach to take. This is what we plan to attempt
during November. I would like to invite you to consider joining in this
endeavor. Realizing that we most likely own different versions of the
Bible will be a good thing, as our messages will give us the opportunity to look at how God’s Word directly teaches us.
We do not stand on anything else in this place. We stand
with both feet firmly planted on this sure foundation, with Christ Jesus as our cornerstone! So…..bring your Bible to church this week.
Plan to open it, use it, and read from it. Together, we will let the Holy
Spirit lead us into His truth!

You are invited to visit the library at St. John’s.
We have a wide variety of books for children of
all ages and adults. Kids and adults will love to
have books to read as the weather is getting
cooler. Let’s curl up on the sofa to relax and enjoy a good
book.
To check out a book, simply write your name, the date, and
the name of the book in the binder on the
desk in the library. Enjoy your books for a few
weeks and then return by putting them in the
book slot in the desk.

For the month of November, our
men’s and women’s nights will each
have their own Thanksgiving feast!
The women will gather at Sarah
Licht’s on Saturday, Nov. 22nd. The
men will get together on Sunday,
Nov. 23rd. We would love for each
attendee to bring a dish to pass so
that there will be plenty of food to go around. The

2015 Mission Trip Info Meeting
On November 19 @ 6:00 pm in the youth room we will be
having our information meeting for the 2015 senior high mission trip. If you are currently in 8th-12th grade you are welcome to come to this meeting and on the mission trip! If you

Operation Christmas Child Drop-Off Site
We are looking for volunteers to help at the drop–off site during
the week. The job is simple and a short-term commitment.
Maybe your family wants to volunteer for a few hours; there is
no age limit. Maybe you are involved in a group that wants to do
its part, or maybe you are an individual with a heart for service.
Everyone is welcome!
As a volunteer, you are a host of St. John’s by welcoming those
who come through our doors to drop off boxes, keeping a count
of boxes collected, and more.
The shifts are listed below…. Come for a couple of hours or stay
for the day. All help is needed. If you want to know more or

Calling all Youth, Kids and Adults
Join in and be a part of our Congregation-wide Mission Project!
Operation Christmas Child! - November 2nd– 23rd
Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in
desperate situations around the world through gift-filled
shoeboxes and the Good News of God’s love.
Here’s how it works:
1. Pick up a shoebox at St. John’s or find one of your own (standard
size, please). You can also use a small plastic container. You can
wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most
importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.
2. Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl and the
child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Labels are available at
church with the shoeboxes. Mark your age category and tape the
label to the top of your box.
3. Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. A list
of items is also available to pick up. Here are a few suggestions:
* TOYS : small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, etc.
* SCHOOL SUPPLIES: pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons, etc.
* HYGIENE ITEMS: toothbrush, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb
* OTHER: Hard candy (double bag all candy), T-shirts, sunglasses,
hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries)
4. A PERSONAL NOTE: In a separate envelope, you may enclose a
note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. (If you include your name and address, the child may write back The
Sunday School Children’s offerings will be used to pay the shipping
costs. If you wish, you may donate $7 to cover the shipping of your
box. Write your check to “Samaritan’s Purse” (note “OCC” on
memo line) and place it in an envelope on top inside your box.
5. Place a rubber band around each closed shoe box and drop off at
church no later than November 17th.

What about your child's faith?
Will it stick through their teenage years,
college, and adulthood?
Almost half of high school seniors struggle deeply with
their faith. Need some good news? Check out the book “Sticky
Faith!” This book aims to help show parents how to encourage
their child's faith and help it stick with them into adulthood. Copies
of this book are available through Kelly Thole ( Children and Family Ministry Director) or in the church library. Read the book and/or
join us for our Sticky Faith Parent Study
beginning November 2nd at 9:30am.

“Living the Ten Commandments in an Online World.”
7th & 8th graders who bring themselves and a parent will receive a
CYBER point!

Women In Mission
St. John’s celebrated LWML on
both Saturday, October 11, and
Sunday, October 12. In addition to
the eloquent sermon of Pastor
Klemz and assistance of Women in
Mission members, many others
played important behind-thescenes roles. Shala Holm did a
tremendous job decorating (as always), and Tim Berteau, Bill Morri,
and Dylan and Jesse Meyer shared
our PowerPoint presentation for
church attendees. People dedicate
time, talent, and money year-round
to missions. It’s often unrecognized, but it’s vital. By the time this
article is published, Women in Mission members will have attended a
Zone Rally, continued to sew quilts,
and spent countless hours getting
ready for the Country Fair. People
will be filling mite boxes. These
efforts encourage fellowship, support missions and help us “Be the
Church.”
At LWML Sunday, we sang “Praise
to the Lord, the Almighty” written by
Joachim Neander in 1665. Almost
360 years later, this hymn still outlines a successful walk in faith and
fellowship, strong LWML principles.
From its verses: “Ponder anew,
what the Almighty can do, as with
His love He befriends you,” we have
a wonderful chance to re-think
ways God has blessed us. Then we
have a great opportunity to establish caring relationships at St.
John’s. Together we can help many.
“Have you not seen all that is needful has been, sent by His gracious
adorning?” As Christian women we
are witnesses to God’s goodness.
Through mission projects, we have
tremendous resources and clearly
see how He helps others. “Let all
who hear, now to His temple draw
near, joining in glad adoration.”
Developing warm and welcoming
activities and mission projects
brings us together. They are wonderful ways to live a life of positivity,
knowing God is always with us. “Let
the Amen, sound from His people
again, gladly forever adore Him.”
Amen is right. When we encourage
one another and dedicate time and
strengths to mission projects, people throughout the globe grow in
God’s love. It’s my prayer St. John’s
women seek out every opportunity
to be a friend and servant to God,
and ask for help whenever you
need it. Through Women in Mission,
we can build each other up, motivate one another, and support each
other in our walk in faith. We encourage everyone at St. John’s to
join and help whenever possible.

this time. He feels as we walk together in the path we are on
“BEING” the church with our excellent visitation team, youth staff, and
volunteer help we receive our
“vision for 2015” is great. Success

out for a few days the first part of
Nov.
Youth Ministry -- Child & Family Ministry: Youth – Chris Ryan reported
that Gabe and Sarah Licht are now
working with youth as leaders during group and are much appreciated. Valley Scare had 19 people attending and went extremely well.
The youth women and men’s
groups are now meeting and growing. Nov 14th will a night for the 7th
and 8th grades (not an overnighter).
There will be games and small
group devotionals etc.
Kathryn Elsen updated the board
on the Mission Trip for next year. It
will be in Waterloo Iowa in July,
there are 25 spots.
Kelly Thole clarified that she works

with children from Birth through Junior High and Families - Chris Ryan
works also in the Junior High area
through High School. Kelly commented on Operation Christmas
starting in Nov. and that we will
once again be the Drop Off location
the week of Nov. 16th through 24th.
Nov. 19th there will be a Parents
Night with a special speaker, Craig
McCourt, speaking on the topic
“Living the ten commandments in
an Online World”. With some family
conflict the nursery leader, Angela
Friedrich has had to resign so Kelly
is once again looking to fill that position. The children’s bags are being
changed and will now have clip
boards and there will be bins from
which the kids may choose what
they would like in their bag. Kelly
will teach the “Sticky Faith Parent
Class” starting Nov. 2nd and running
for 6 weeks. She commented this is
not just for parents but for any adult
interested in how to keep our youth
interested in their church after high
school. Parents will learn they are
not in this alone we are all here to
help – in it together. If you would
like a book contact Kelly or the
church.
Financial Secretary’s Report:
Kathryn Elsen gave an overview of
written report and extended appreciation of all the response she received in asking for counters. The
counting and materials will be
moved to a different room.
Treasurer’s Report: Kyle Bjork said
that although contributions were
down for September we are still
good for the year. Noah’s Ark will be
using the Education envelope in
Nov. A motion to return $400 deposit money for the Holy Land to Bill
Cook was made by Janice Marschel
seconded by Roger Strege. Motion
carried. On a motion from Roger
Strege seconded by Dave Haggerty
the financial and treasurer’s reports
were accepted.

BOARD & COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Noah’s Ark: Kelly Thole reported
the staff will be going to Family of
Christ church in Ham Lake to observe. Chapel continues. December
the children will be doing the art
work for the Library Art Area. There
will be one Christmas program. The
kids will also decorate brown bags
requested by Project Compassion.
Elders: Dave Haggerty commented
that computer problems have interfered with keeping on track with the
membership program but is being
worked on. Dave Taylor has offered
to help and along with the other
Pastor’s have assured the Elders
they will help with transition if and
when the time comes. There will be
some Elders along with Pastor Hanan meeting with the Korbels.
Trustees: August Mussell gave an
overview of the written report in Stan
Meyer’s absence. The board is looking
for someone with a boilers license to
help with maintenance.
Evangelism: Roger Strege reported on
the Family Fun Fest results. They started with a balance of $3500 adding
approx. $1800 so now have a total of
close to $5400 and are looking at projects at which to apply these monies.
The board decided to move forward
with purchasing t-shirts – purple with
“Be the Church” logo on one side and
St John’s on the other. These will be
used for functions and possible sold.
Stewardship: no report at this time.
Fellowship: Marti Ryan absent. It was
commented that finger food will be
served on the 26th for the form.
Women In Mission (LWML): Pat Norine
said the report was written adding the
a basket was created for the Napper
fundraiser. WIM purchased the video
and 10 books for the Beth Moore
study.
Library/Decorating: The Library people
are reading to the Sunday school children. The WIM and Library people presented the art work depicting the
Country Fair now showing in the Library Art Area.
Project Compassion / Health Cabinet:
The board is sending Thanksgiving
cards and will be creating gift bags for
Christmas giving.
Missions: Janice Marschel said list will
be forthcoming at Quarterly.
