THE ROOSEVELT HOTEL
The moment you enter the block-long canopy of golden columns and crystal
chandeliers, there’s little question that your stay will be anything short of grand.
One of the South’s first grand hotels, a $170 million historic restoration has
returned The Roosevelt to its place as the premier luxury hotel in New Orleans
and one of America’s grandest destinations.
Now a part of the prestigious Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, this landmark
combines elegant guest rooms, historic dining and entertainment venues with
abundant and luxurious meeting spaces. New indulgences like the world-famous
Waldorf Astoria Spa make for a truly legendary experience in the heart of this
remarkable city.
The Roosevelt stands in the same place it has for more than 100 years, at the
heart of all the history, cuisine, entertainment and culture that made New
Orleans famous. Just past the hotel’s magnificent brass doors are the narrow
streets and old-world charm of the French Quarter. Stroll along the shop-lined
sidewalks of Royal Street. Immerse yourself in the constant buzz of activity at
Jackson Square. Let your ears take you from one club to the next as you soak in a
wealth of musical stylings at Preservation Hall or on Frenchmen Street. With the
St. Charles and Canal streetcar lines within blocks of The Roosevelt, the rest of
New Orleans is just a few stops away. Walk amongst the centuries-old live oaks
of City Park or marvel at the majestic homes of the historic Garden District.
When you stay at The Roosevelt, all of New Orleans is yours to explore.

ERIK ELIEL
FRED HYMAN MEMORIAL LECTURE
THURSDAY OCTOBER 6, 2016
9:15AM - 10:30AM
Erik Eliel, founder and president of Radar Training
International, has been involved in aviation since 1979. His
earliest years as a professional aviator were as an Air Force
pilot flying the T-38, C-141, and the U-2. His interest with
radar began in 1991 while flying airlift and transport
missions to Europe, Africa, South America, and the
Middle East. In 1997, Erik was selected to join the cadre
of instructors at the Air Force Advanced Instrument
School in San Antonio, Texas, teaching advanced
instrument concepts to pilots representing, NASA, federal
law enforcement agencies, and all branches of the DOD.
It was here that Erik developed and taught the first-ever
formal weather radar course for Air Force pilots.
Erik’s early interest with weather radar and severe
convective weather was inspired by the work of industry
legends Bob Buck, Jim Cook, J.T. Lee, Archie Trammell,
and Dr. Fred Bates. Currently, his radar seminar is offered
both domestically and abroad and has been presented to
professional pilots representing the flight departments of
Fortune 500 companies, aviation associations, a major
airline, the military, as well as dispatchers and
meteorologists of aviation-related companies. He has been
called on by the manufacturers of airborne weather radar
systems to consult in the design, operational employment
of, and evaluation of their systems. His radar- and
weather-related articles have been published in the NBAA
Journal of Business Aviation and in Business &
Commercial Aviation. In addition, his input has been
solicited for safety-orientated publications such as the
Flight Safety Foundation’s magazine AeroSafety World.
Erik has over 13,000 hours of flying time and is currently
a line pilot for a major airline, logging more than 600
hours annually. He also maintains his CFI, CFII, and MEI
ratings. His company, Radar Training International,
maintains active memberships in multiple professional
flying organizations and associations including National
Business Aviation Association (NBAA), American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).

MMOPA COMPANION TRAINING OPPORTUNITY
Your choice of Introductory Ground School - Advanced
Ground School - 1.5 hours practicing pattern flying &
landings at the airport in YOUR plane with an instructor
in the left seat.
This year for the companions ground school we are
changing the program up a little and will be offering two
different ground school courses. Legacy Flight Training
out of Vero Beach and Scottsdale will be providing Caitlin
McCarthy as the companions ground school instructor.
MOPA companions are welcome to attend one or both of
the courses as described below.
Caitlin is an instructor at Legacy in Vero Beach, Florida.
Caitlin joined the Legacy team in 2013 after spending six
years as the Chief Pilot for an engineering firm in
Jacksonville, FL. She has been an active flight instructor
since 2006, accruing almost 2,000 hours of dual given
time, with 400 of those hours in the PA-46. Caitlin enjoys
sharing her passion for aviation and travel with new and
seasoned aviators. She aims to make flying accessible to
people of all backgrounds with her clear, entertaining style
of communication and genuine enthusiasm for the
subject.
"The Empowered Passenger"
(Introductory Ground School) 2.5 hours
Thursday 9:30am -12:00pm
Provide a step by step approach to firmly comprehending
and applying the essential fundamentals to proactively
serve as an essential resource during all phases of flight
including challenging and critical scenarios. Most
importantly, the goal will be instilling confidence that
pilots and non-Pilots alike CAN be crew-members.
Beyond just staying out of the pilot's way, what you can do
to make the flight safer, easier and more enjoyable for
everyone. Topics may include: assisting with the preflight
inspection, proper loading of baggage and people, sterile
cockpit concept, traffic watch, basic radio phraseology and
how to listen effectively, aeromedical considerations, what
constitutes an "emergency," how to help in case of an
emergency (safety equipment, navigation, emergency
checklists, basic flying skills). We will also allow time for
discussion, possibly analyzing an accident where the
passenger could have been of assistance and mitigated the
situation or simply answering the participants "what if"
questions.
CONVENTION GUIDE
|
"Partners in Flight”
(Advanced Ground School) 2.5 hours
Friday 9:30am - 12:00pm
Provide an introduction to the execution of instrument
approach procedures utilizing the aircraft’s onboard
equipment along with basic, disciplined aircraft control
techniques. The objective will be to instill confidence that
with a well-planned and rehearsed mindset, the use of
standardized flight deck flows and aircraft control will
yield a predictable and successful outcome in a variety of
scenarios. This training will also encourage one to assume
progressively active roles on future flights thus enabling
them to refine the skills previously acquired. This is an advanced course for those who have spent a lot
of time in the cockpit, perhaps even have a license. Topics
may include: PA-46 systems (with a focus on
pressurization) and the sounds, smells, sensations, aural
alerts and CAS messages/annunciators that may indicate a
problem; instrument theory including loading and flying
autopilot coupled approaches; basic weather theory and
planning; and helping the pilot make a good go/no-go
decision using the Risk Assessment Form developed by
Legacy Flight Training. This course will include a
discussion/analysis of an accident where the passenger's
action or inaction played some role in the event.
In both courses the participants will leave with a list of
questions to ask their pilot on their next flight, ranging
from simple: "can you please show me where the fire
extinguisher is located and how to use it?" to more
advanced "can I try to load, activate and arm the approach
with your help?" as appropriate.
The Introductory and Advanced Ground School 2.5 hour
courses are $150.00 for one or both. The 1.5 hour flying
session is $600.00 and INCLUDES one or both ground
school classes.
The flying sessions usually sell out quickly so register now
at www.mmopa.com. Both ground school classes have no
limit on attendance.

MMOPA COMPANIONS TOUR
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8TH 10:00AM - 3:30PM
Oak Alley Plantation
Come Enjoy Her Beauty and Dream of Her Rich Past!
At the time Oak Alley was built, the River Region sugar industry was flourishing, and a chain of
stately plantations and their homes that lined the banks of the Mississippi. Too many of these
plantation homes since have been devoured by the passage of time, exposure to the elements
and mankind’s struggle to move on, but Oak Alley remains as a testimonial to the old South’s
golden age. There is a simple authenticity about her grandeur that reassures and frees the mind
to contemplate and appreciate all facets of her existence. She offers the enchantment of one way
of life without compromising the significance of another. Here indeed is something for
everyone.
Her restoration in 1925 by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Stewart was carefully planned so that the
inclusion of modern plumbing and kitchen facilities would conform to the original architectural
format. In restoring something of beauty one assumes the responsibility of resisting the
temptation to add little “improvements”.
Adaptive restoration is somewhat more permissive, but at no time should it lose sight of the
importance of preserving the very essence of the original. Inasmuch as the success of such a
venture tends to be measured more by the lack of fundamental architectural changes rather than
by the quantity, no matter how ingenious they might be, it is interesting to note that the Stewarts’
efforts at Oak Alley resulted in what many architects regard as the finest remaining example
of adaptive restoration.
Shortly before her death in 1972, Josephine Armstrong Stewart created the Oak Alley
Foundation,
a non-profit, charitable, literary, educational trust, so that, through the love and support of those
who value a region’s link to the past, the mansion and 25 acres of grounds would endure.
After arriving at the Plantation we will have a guided tour for 1 hour followed by a private
luncheon. After lunch we will have another hour for a self-guided tour and historical discovery
of the surrounding grounds.
THIS TOUR INCLUDES:
PRIVATE MOTOR COACH - PRIVATE GUIDE - LUNCH - ALL APPLICABLE TAXES & GRATUITIES
THE COST OF THIS TOUR IS $99.00 PER PERSON

WORLD WAR II MUSEUM
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6TH 3:30PM - 9:00PM
The War that Changed the World
Why it was Fought, How it was Won, and What it Means Today
The National WWII Museum tells the story of the American Experience in the war that changed the world–why it was
fought, how it was won, and what it means today–so that all generations will understand the price of freedom and be
inspired.
The National WWII Museum in New Orleans opened on June 6, 2000, as The National D-Day Museum. Founded by
historian and author, Stephen Ambrose, the Museum tells the story of the American Experience in the war that changed
the world — why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today — so that all generations will understand the
price of freedom and be inspired by what they learn. In 2003, Congress officially designated us as America’s National
WWII Museum. The National WWII Museum is an private 501c3 corporation.
Designated by Congress in 2003 as the America’s National WWII Museum, the campus includes the Louisiana Memorial
Pavilion, showcasing the large artifacts of the war and exhibits on D-Day at Normandy, the Home Front and the Pacific;
the Solomon Victory Theater, a 4D theater showing the exclusive Tom Hanks production, Beyond All Boundaries; the
Stage Door Canteen, where the music and entertainment of the “Greatest Generation” comes to life; the John E. Kushner
Restoration Pavilion, where staff and volunteers restore artifacts in public view; the American Sector restaurant and Soda
