Compassion, Care, Integrity and Faith
The Spirit of St. Mary’s December 2014 A publication of St. Mary’s Foundation St. Mary’s Foundation’s mission is to improve and enhance services provided for patients and residents of St. Mary’s Health Care System and to ensure these services are available to those who need them most by providing opportunities for giving to the community. Sisters Katie Bogle, Megan Lewis, Anne O’Brien, Bridget Mink and Sara O’Brien, who host BreastFest each year, celebrate the dedication of St. Mary’s Hospital Mammography Waiting Area in memory of their mother, Tyanna Barre O’Brien, on March 28, 2014. St. Mary’s Foundation dedicated the Mammography Waiting Area at St. Mary’s Outpatient Center in honor of Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer. Compassion, Care, Integrity and Faith Dear Donors and Friends of St. Mary’s, With 2014 coming to an end, I want to take this opportunity to say thank you for making this year incredibly successful! Your generous support makes a difference and assures that the continued fine tradition of excellence, quality, service, and compassionate health care is provided by St. Mary’s for you and our community. My sincere thanks to our Athens and Greensboro Foundation Boards of Directors, the Committees, Young Professional Advisory Board, employees and volunteers, whose ongoing compassion, stewardship and commitment are the heart of our system. St. Mary’s would not thrive without the generous support of our many donors and volunteers! You are vital to our ongoing efforts to extend our Mission and Values to our community, allowing us to bring essential new services and build for future needs. The Foundation is an important part of the team, helping to keep our ministry in the forefront of health care in our region. By envisioning our future and working strategically to make it a reality, St. Mary’s Foundation helps to make certain that St. Mary’s mission will prosper for years to come. For that I am very grateful. I am proud of St. Mary’s Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital’s accomplishments during 2014! With the generosity of the community combined with the work of our Foundation, St. Mary’s enhanced our healthcare facilities, access and services in Athens and Greene County. Events including the “Take a Chance for Kids” Raffle, Golf Tournament, BreastFest, Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer, and the Annual Gala raise money to support the many needs of our patients in the community. These events continue to grow and truly make a difference to our patients. We are thankful to the supporters and organizers of these events, without which we could not have achieved such great success. Through partnerships with communities, donors and employees, the Foundation has endowed St. Mary’s with modern facilities, equipment and programs. Some of the disbursements of philanthropic funds for 2014 include upgrading the infant security system, installing new surgical lights in the second floor operating room, purchasing Pulse Oximeters for the newborn nursery, and funding Camp Nokose for children who have lost a loved one. I am excited to announce that St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital was named 2014 Small Hospital of the Year by the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals at its 31st Annual Conference on October 16. The category includes most non-profit community hospitals in Georgia with fewer than 100 beds! I am extremely proud of this tremendous achievement and want to congratulate all of our employees, physicians and volunteers at Good Samaritan. Your support is a major reason that St. Mary’s continues to excel. Your energy, enthusiasm, and financial support truly make a difference in all we do. On behalf of everyone at St. Mary’s and the communities we serve, thank you. Dear Friends and Supporters of St. Mary’s, I am excited to announce that 2014 has been another successful year for St. Mary’s Foundation and I am proud and grateful to have served as the Chair of St. Mary’s Foundation Board of Directors during a year full of accomplishments! St. Mary’s Foundation’s mission is to improve and enhance services provided for all patients and residents of St. Mary’s and to ensure these services are available to those who need them most by providing opportunities for giving to the community. Achieving our mission could not be possible without your support. I want to thank each and every one of our donors – community members, employees, physicians and businesses – who support St. Mary’s. This support comes not only in monetary donations, but gifts of time and talent by serving on a Board or Committee or being an Auxiliary member. St. Mary’s Foundation events raised over $222,000 to promote excellence in healthcare for the patients, residents and families served by St. Mary’s Health Care System. What an outstanding accomplishment! I would like to share with you several highlights from our 2014 events. The Young Professionals Advisory Board held its annual “Take a Chance for Kids” Raffle on February 27, 2014 raising nearly $16,000 for St. Mary’s Children’s Services. On May 12th, the Foundation hosted its Annual Golf Tournament benefitting St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care, Hospice and Palliative Care Services. The tournament had 154 golfers participate and raised over $84,000! This year’s Gala raised more money than ever before for our Children’s Services! Through sponsorships, donations, and live and silent auctions, St. Mary’s Fourteenth Annual Gala netted over $122,000, exceeding our record high by over $5,000. Through partnerships with local organizations, St. Mary’s Foundation was the beneficiary of many great events including BreastFest Athens, hosted by The Tyanna Foundation, “Mission in a Mile” sponsored by Central Presbyterian Church, and Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer. St. Mary’s Love Lights, a year-round fundraiser hosted by St. Mary’s Auxiliary, lit its Love Lights tree located in the atrium on December 2, 2014. We cannot begin to express our appreciation to each organization for raising money for the mission of St. Mary’s Foundation. St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital held its annual Heart & Soul Gala at the Ritz Carlton on February 15th, and hosted the Bucky Dent Invitational Legends on the Link Golf Tournament on October 26 and 27, 2014. The results from these events were exceptional and we are unbelievably proud of the hard work put forth from our boards, volunteers, and employees. Please read Rick Wolfert’s letter in this magazine for an update on Good Samaritan. I strongly believe 2015 will be another successful and thriving year for St. Mary’s Health Care System. The Foundation, with the help and support from our community, Board members, volunteers, physicians, employees, and staff, will continue to support St. Mary’s in providing the integral health care needs of our community, both in the Athens and Greensboro area. F Feel better her With Best Regards, I hope you enjoy the 2014 Annual St. Mary’s Foundation Magazine, The Spirit of St. Mary’s! Have a wonderful holiday season and a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year. Don McKenna, FACHE President and CEO St. Mary’s Health Care System Seth Waltman, Chair St. Mary’s Foundation Board of Directors FOUNDATION FUNDS IN ACTION: Center for Wound Healing St. Mary’s Foundation supports St. Mary’s Center for Wound Healing using contributions donated to the Foundation. The state-of-the-art center has provided a full range of wound healing services in one convenient outpatient facility since its opening at 4017 Atlanta Highway in November 2012. The Wound Center’s goal is to provide compassionate care and patient education to help prevent amputations and improve quality of life. St. Mary’s Foundation strives to reach that goal by purchasing necessary equipment and services. On August 6, 2014, the Foundation purchased a wound vacuum service for a patient at the Center for Wound Healing to help heal her infected leg. The KCI wound vacuum, used at the Wound Center, delivers negative pressure at the wound site through a patented dressing helping to draw wound edges together, remove infectious materials and actively promote new skin growth. “My leg began turning black because of infection,” said the Center for Wound Healing patient, who asked to be kept anonymous. “It wouldn’t have gotten better without the wound vacuum and I couldn’t afford to use the vacuum without the Foundation’s help. Thank you so much to St. Mary’s Foundation and Center for Wound Healing for saving my leg.” In addition to the wound vacuum, the Center for Wound Healing offers services including debridements, compression therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, advance specialized dressings and therapies, and infection control. “St. Mary’s Center for Wound Healing is beneficial to the community in that there is someplace that caters to the specific need of wound care,” said Katie English, Director of St. Mary’s Center for Wound Healing. “We want to enhance patient care and get better healing results for patients in the community.” St. Mary’s Center for Wound Healing could not provide essential wound healing services without the monetary support from our community. Our sincerest thank you for your donations to St. Mary’s Foundation. Your support is the reason St. Mary’s continues to prosper and succeed! Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer Naming Opportunity Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer (BBBC) was created as a result of founder Teresa Abbott’s battle with breast cancer. Teresa won that battle, which inspired her and her husband Jay to hold a golf tournament each year pairing golfers with Georgia Bulldog Football players and coaches. But more importantly, the BBBC golf tournament is an event to raise money for the treatment and cure of breast cancer. The BBBC charity, founded ten years ago, has donated over $204,000 to St. Mary’s Foundation’s Radiology and Breast Health Fund, and in 2014, they donated $67,000. Because of this tremendous accomplishment and outstanding effort, St. Mary’s Foundation dedicated the Mammography Waiting Area at St. Mary’s Outpatient Center (see front cover) in honor of Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer. The plaque, installed in November 2014, reminds viewers of the incredible impact BBBC has made on the patients, families, and employees affected by breast cancer. Thank you Jay and Teresa Abbott and Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer! 1 – The BBBC golf tournament was held July 7, 2014. 2 – BBBC volunteers and Coach Mark Richt attend the 2014 event. 3 – Jay and Teresa Abbott with their two sons, Chris (left) and Michael (right). St. Mary’s Thrift Store Celebrates $1 Million Milestone On Monday, October 6, 2014, St. Mary’s Auxiliary, which operates St. Mary’s Thrift Store on Broad Street, celebrated making the tens of thousands of sales needed to hit the $1 million milestone. The thrift store was first envisioned in 2007. Then-Auxiliary President Wanda LashSorenson pitched the idea to the Auxiliary Board as a way to raise funds for St. Mary’s Hospice. Noting that the Athens area did not have an upscale thrift store, Lash-Sorenson felt there was an empty niche in the market that the Auxiliary could fill. The Auxiliary Board agreed, and a few months later, the Board of Directors of St. Mary’s Health Care System and Foundation gave their official consent. St. Mary’s agreed to let the Auxiliary use a recently acquired storefront on Broad Street and provided labor from its Engineering staff to renovate the facility. A loan to cover the cost of renovation was provided by St. Mary’s Foundation, and the store opened on April 22, 2008. The store covers its own expenses, from keeping the lights on to paying back the loan that funded the initial renovations, which it did in just a few years. Even after deducting all expenses and selling items on average less than $10, the volunteers have been able to generate more than $561,000. Thank you to St. Mary’s Auxiliary, the Auxiliary’s Thrift Store Committee and the 30-plus volunteers who keep the store open five days a week. The funds you have raised provide care to patients at St. Mary’s. Without your hard work and dedication, we would not be celebrating this incredible milestone. St. Mary’s Thrift Store is located at 2165 W. Broad St., Athens, and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Donations of gently used clothes, books, household goods and more are welcome, and large donations can be picked up from your home or business. Please call 706.389.2772 for more information. The Legacy of David and June Elder St. Mary’s Legacy Society recognizes individuals who have included St. Mary’s in their estate plans. The word “legacy” is defined as “what someone is remembered for or what they left behind that is revered and has influenced the present day.” Well, David and June Elder will certainly be remembered for what they left behind to St. Mary’s. David Elder passed away on April 10, 2010, and June Elder passed away on November 16, 2013. Through The David M. Elder Irrevocable Trust, the family graciously donated over $250,000 to St. Mary’s Foundation’s Hospice Fund in 2014. This donation has contributed greatly to the Hospice House and our legacy of caring for hospice patients. Because of the generosity of David and June Elder, St. Mary’s Foundation dedicated two patient rooms at St. Mary’s Hospice House in memory of the Elder’s in accordance to the family’s wishes. The reception, held on October 22, 2014, celebrated the Elder’s legacy gift to our hospice program and the lasting difference they have made on the community. Mrs. Bennie Heard, sister of June Elder, commented at the reception that “David and June would be smiling down on us from heaven.” We would like to express our appreciation to these individuals for your foresight in including St. Mary’s in your plans, and extend invitations to officially become members of St. Mary’s Legacy Society. We consider it an honor and recognize that this special consideration will enable us to continue our mission into the future. Friends and family of David and June Elder celebrate the dedication of two rooms at St. Mary’s Hospice House. 2014 GALA October 11, 2014 The St. Mary’s 14th Annual Gala was held on October 11, 2014, at Athens Country Club. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and guests and the dedication of our Special Events Committee, this year’s Gala was our most successful Gala yet, raising over $122,000 for St. Mary’s Children’s Services! We continue to be overwhelmed by the community support it has received. Before I give an update on the progress of the Good Samaritan Foundation, I want to congratulate Good Samaritan Hospital for being named Georgia’s Small Hospital of the Year by the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals. Our Foundation Board is very proud of this accomplishment in its first full year of operation in the new facility and is honored to be a part of this important and impressive Critical Access Hospital. Our Good Samaritan Foundation Board and its Committees have been very hard at work over the last year. The not-for-profit, 80,000 square foot Critical Access Hospital asked the community for financial support with a goal of raising $8 million in philanthropic funds, or about 15% of the total cost of the project. To date, our Capital Campaign has raised over $7.4 million with the funds going to acquire a broad range of critical state-of-the-art medical equipment and technology. We have now achieved over 90% of our goal and want to extend our thanks to our more than 900 donors for this level of support. St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Foundation hosted two successful fundraising events this year to benefit Good Samaritan Hospital including The Legends on the Links Bucky Dent Invitational Golf Tournament and the Heart & Soul Gala held at the Ritz Carlton. Both of these events had tremendous results! Thank you so much to our Board members, committees, employees and volunteers for all of their efforts with these outstanding events. I am pleased to report that we have made excellent progress in 2014 in providing the funds necessary to acquire a broad range of critically needed equipment for Good Samaritan (including the recent acquisition of a Nuclear Camera and completion of the Nuclear Medicine Room). While we celebrate our success to date, the hospital still needs $600,000 to equip and furnish a third Operating Room (critical for recruiting medical specialist to the areas); and, the Minor Procedures Room (used in the operating suite for such procedures as cataracts and minor surgery). As a reminder, all gifts and donations support Good Samaritan Hospital and are fully tax deductible. It is my honor and privilege to serve as the 2013-2014 Chair of the St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Foundation Board. Thank you for all you do and we are honored by your ongoing support of Good Samaritan Hospital. Frederick E. “Rick” Wolfert, Chair St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Foundation Board Spotlight: Becky Smith St. Mary’s Foundation is proud to spotlight Becky Smith, one of St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Foundation Board’s newest members. Born and raised in Holdenville, Oklahoma, Becky attended Oklahoma State University. After graduation, she joined IBM. One of her moves led her to Fayetteville, Arkansas where she met and married her handsome husband, Steve. For 30 years, Becky worked in sales and marketing executive positions with IBM and Hitachi. She was the Vice President of World Wide Marketing for Hitachi’s Hard Drive business when she retired in 2006. Steve also worked for 30 years in sales and marketing with consumer packaged goods for Procter and Gamble and Helene Curtis before he retired as well. After retirement, Becky and Steve decided they wanted to be closer to their family, so they packed up their lives in San Jose, California and moved to Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia. The move allows them to play golf and be on the lake while also being located closer to their three sons and nine grandchildren. The Greensboro community is lucky to have gained such a hardworking, kind-hearted woman. Becky is the past-president of the Reynold’s Women’s Golf Association and serves on the Greene County Food Pantry Board. She is also a member of the Oklahoma State University Foundation Board of Governors. For the last six years, Steve and Becky helped raise money on behalf of the Greene County Food Pantry to provide 370 local families with a full Thanksgiving dinner including a 16 pound turkey, and a Christmas dinner with a 10 pound ham. This unbelievable 40 pounds of food for each holiday covers about 10% of Greene County. Becky and Steve raised $6,000 their first year, providing only the Thanksgiving turkey. In their 2014 fundraiser, Becky and Steve raised over $23,000. When Becky heard there might be a new hospital in Greene County, she immediately wanted to become involved. Not only was healthcare important for her and Steve after retirement, but Becky felt a first-class hospital was necessary to help the community grow and develop. Therefore, Becky joined the 2014 St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Foundation Board. The Foundation is proud to have Becky serve on the Board and is honored to spotlight her in this year’s magazine. MARY’S Good Samaritan Hospital: Nuclear Medicine Since opening in November 2013, St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital has seen impressive increases in the number of patients, treatments, and services provided by our ministry. One of the most notable installments was the addition of the nuclear medicine suite. When the hospital was built, a shell was included for the nuclear medicine room to be built in the future. After months of waiting for the state’s approval and St. Mary’s Foundation raising the appropriate funds, the room was added to Good Samaritan Hospital in October 2014. Siemens “Symbia” Nuclear Medicine Camera Nuclear medicine is an important tool in diagnosing a variety of serious conditions, including heart disease and tumors. By injecting low level, harmless radioactive substances into patients and allowing the radiation to circulate through the body, doctors can detect which areas are absorbing the radioactivity. This identifies where the problem is located. Nuclear medicine tests differ from most other imaging modalities in that diagnostic tests primarily show the function of the system being investigated as opposed to traditional form imaging such as CT or MRI. Nuclear medicine imaging is generally more organ or tissue-specific (lungs scan, heart scan, bone scan, brain scan, etc.) than those in conventional radiology imaging, which focus on a specific section of the body (chest X-ray, abdomen/pelvis CT scan, head CT scan, etc.). In addition, there are nuclear medicine studies that allow imaging of the whole body based on certain disease patterns (bone scans in cancer patients). Although the nuclear medicine room was installed in October, it is not yet open to patients because of fine tuning and calibrating equipment. Nuclear medicine will be available to patients after the first of the year. Once open, Good Samaritan patients who need nuclear medicine will not have to leave the community to undergo this kind of testing. “We are so excited about having nuclear medicine at Good Sam because no other hospital in the area between Putnam County, Greene County and Morgan County have nuclear medicine,” Rich Sabol, Radiology Manager at Good Samaritan Hospital, said. “This will be great for the patients in the area because instead of having to drive to Athens, Atlanta, Milledgeville or Augusta, they can come here.” 1ST ANNUAL “LEGENDS ON THE LINKS” - Bucky Dent’s Invitational Golf Tournament The Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation hosted the 1st Annual “Legends on the Links” – Bucky Dent’s Invitational Golf Tournament on October 27th. Along with over 100 golfers, six baseball greats played in a 4-man scramble: former Atlanta Braves first baseman Andres Galarraga, former New York Yankees catcher Rick Cerrone, former Atlanta Brave and New York Yankee star and six-time World Series Champion Chris Chambliss, former Detroit Tigers slugger Cecil Fielder, former New York Yankee infielder Brian Doyle, and special tournament honoree Wade Boggs, who was an inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005 after 18 years with the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees as a third baseman. The event began with a cocktail party at the Sandy Creek Barn on Sunday evening that featured a DJ spinning great tunes, wonderful food and libations, and a highly successful silent and live auction. The weather on Monday provided a picture-perfect day for golf, camaraderie with old and new friends, and lots of good food and prizes for everyone. Proceeds from this tournament benefit St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital with hopes to equip a third operating room and minor procedures room. Next year’s tournament will be in the fall with a firm date to be released as soon as possible. We hope that you can join us!
