BROC and Samaritan’s Kitchen with checks going to each agency in the amount of $2,613. That’s over five grand that directly benefits individuals in the Wilkes area! We even collected a few more monetary donaOons before the checks were delivered thanks to the huge hearts of BMSC members! Our BMSC members ROCK! Thanks also to Brenda and Phil Tomlinson, their granddaughter, Bailee, and Tim Hauser for going with me to deliver the checks and food. It gave us great pleasure to see the happiness and graOtude on the faces of Julie and Dare upon receiving the much needed funds and a great feeling knowing that our shag club was able to make a difference to those that benefit from these organizaOons. I’m sure the look on each of our faces was priceless as we presented the checks...and the rewards for doing so will forever be engrained in our hearts! Our Silent AucOon was a joint effort of individuals that provided items to those that purchased the goods and services or came and supported our dance. Give yourselves a pat on the back for your accomplishments and thanks for “paying it forward!” I want to thank those of you who joined in the Christmas Parade on December 1. Our club was sponsored with two nice cars, a 1999 BMW converOble and a 1979 Classic VW converOble. We got the BMSC name out there, and hope the exposure it gave us will bring in some new members, and make people aware that there is a shag club in Wilkes County! Thank you Eddie, Marlene and Gary – you are the best! It was a super nice day, a li`le warm for a Christmas Parade, but there were a lot of folks out there enjoying the parade. We played some great shag Christmas songs thru Wilkesboro and N. Wilkesboro! Besides that, we had a lot of fun! 2012 is almost over and before you know it, we will be ringing in a new year!! The new year also brings a Ome for elecOng 2013 club officers. NominaOons will take place at our December 8th dance. Special thanks to Delita Staley and Andy Massengill for serving and to Johnny Worley for Chairing the NominaOng Commi`ee this year. I appreciate the support of BMSC and of me this past year as we worked together to make our club even be`er! I appreciate everything and everyone, including those who gave lessons to our members this year. We’ve learned some new line dances, new shag steps and had great opportuniOes for fellowship with friends. It seems, we just can’t get enough of this wonderful stuff!

Well, if you have wondered or realized that the person selling you your Christmas tree could truly be real or even have a life other than that on the lot…you’ll want to read about Be`y and Johnny Worley’s adventures as Christmas Tree Sales Folks!
This is Johnny and Be`y’s second year of selling Christmas trees in Charleston, SC. Their seasonal employer, who is the owner of a tree farm in West Jefferson, provides them with a camper to live in as they work the tree lot. In preparaOon for their journey, Be`y spent several days packing the camper with necessiOes for their stay before they journeyed south from their Ashe County home to Charleston. Since their days are long, they were very pleased to find a local shag radio staOon last year and are able to fill their days listening to shag music! When it’s Ome to eat, there is no Ome for this busy couple to go grab a bite to eat; so resourceful Be`y prepares many of their delicious meals in a crockpot. The two work hard each day way past sunlight hours selling Christmas joy to families in Charleston straight from their Ashe County Mountains! The weather has been a lot warmer than what they are accustomed to at this Ome of year. In fact, the days have been so nice they even turned the air condiOoner on….and that isn’t even an amenity they use at home! I’m sure it seemed strange to be inside with cool air on! According to Be`y, Johnny delivered the fa`est tree she has ever seen to a girl named Kelly. The tree was about 10 feet high, 9 feet wide—would you say short and stout???? When it arrived at her house she had already named it "CHUBBY". No doubt it will be the conversaOon piece around her home during the holidays. The Worley’s had it set up on display so that everyone that came in would gasp at that tree! They said one lady said you wouldn't be able to find the presents under that fat tree. They asked Kelly to send a picture and we will include it in a future newsle`er if she does. Her friends that came with her (aoer she had measured where she was going to place it) told her she had lost her mind. She apparently knew what she needed because Johnny said that where she placed it was a perfect fit! Whoever said a woman doesn’t know what she wants, didn’t know Kelly! She was determined to have that tree-­‐-­‐-­‐the strong will of the female prevail! Johnny and Be`y can’t do the job as well without the help of their li`le elves (Hispanic workers). They may be small in stature like Johnny, but they walk through carrying trees singing "Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it’s off to work we go". They speak very li`le English but Johnny taught them that song. Next season he will try out a shag song for them to sing. Be`y reminded him that during Christmas it was Santa and the elves, not Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs! His reply was, "They are li`le like dwarfs". They are good workers and Johnny keeps them laughing! You won’t find Grumpy on their Christmas tree lot! Like Be`y and Johnny, their day is long and our friends ooen wonder what they are saying when in conversaOon with each other but figure they are probably be`er off not knowing J. It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that the Worley’s have taught some shag steps!
Although a li`le Ored, they are doing well and know they can rest when there is snow on the ground when they’re back in Ashe County. They send their blessings and wishes for a Merry Christmas to all and look forward to catching up as we ring in the New Year! Be`y says, “We are ready to be back doing the thing we so love and enjoy, dancing and being with all of you.”
