Jennifer Lyn Stachowiak passed away at 3:50 P.M. near Tunnel Hill as the result of a car-truck collision. Jenny was born on November 21, 1985, and resided near Tunnel Hill. Jenny was a member of the cheerleading squad her freshman year and a member of the dance team her sophomore year. Jenny also played the clarinet in the band. She enjoyed shopping, repelling, hiking, bicycling, and spending time with her family and friends. Jenny worked as a waitress at Dolly’s Restaurant. As grief-stricken students came to school following the accident, counselors were on hand to talk with them. A remembrance table was set up in the commons for students to place items on, and there were posters to sign that were given to her family. Mrs. Kreuter’s English III class created a large poster with pictures of Jenny and some pieces of writing out of her writing journal. The poster was displayed at the funeral home and then given to her parents. In the wake of her tragic death, Junior class oficers and sponsors felt they wanted to do something special in Jenny’s memory. A memorial scholarship has been created and will be given to a member of her class at graduation in 2004. Anyone who would like to contribute to the Jennifer Stachowiak Memorial fund may send a check to Vienna High School, noted Jenny’s Memorial. The 82-81 win had the crowd out of their seats and cheering wildly for their respective teams. The game ended with a victory for Vienna, and the crowd showing more enthusiasm that has been seen in many, many years in the Eagle gym. With Meridian losing to Vienna, that created a 3-way tie in the Round Robin event. Sesser’s only loss was to Meridian, and Vienna’s only loss was to Sesser. According to tournament rules, irst place goes to the team with the best free throw percentage. Although it was very close, Sesser won the tournament with a free throw percentage of 70. Brandon Bundren was voted the Tournament’s MVP, and was also the top scorer in the tournament with 91 points. Other Eagle high-scorers included Bryan Waters with 59 points for the tournament, followed closely by Tommy Waters with 56. VHS Cheerleaders Win Bid to State Competition The VHS Cheerleaders took a 1st place win, and qualiied for State competition at the ICCA Regional Cheerleading Competition in Pinkneyville. Sixteen squads competed in 5 different categories, with VHS taking 1st in the Small Varsity Division. State competition is March 7, 8 & 9 in Springield, IL. This is the seventh year the cheerleaders have competed at the ICCA Regionals, but their irst year to qualify for State. Coach Tina Penrod said that this year’s team had some big advantages. “They had an awesome routine choreographed by Candace Sherman and Kelly Aylesworth, tremendous experience and ability and alot of heart. This squad is by far the most positive I’ve ever had.” She also attributes their success to other factors, such as showmanship, great stunting, and most importantly, teamwork. Sophomore cheerleader Amanda Adamson is one of the cheerleaders that will be competing in the State competition. “We have alot of hard work to do, and alot of potential to work with. Hopefully, we’ll place at State.” ICAA does not divide squads by school size. Instead squads are divided by squad size - small varsity, 10 and under, medium varsity, 11-15, and large varsity, 16 and over. At the State competition in Springield, the varsity squad will be competing against other small varsity squads. The VHS JV squad came very close to qualifying, but since they did not qualify at Pinkneyville, they will compete in another Regional competition in January or February in order to try to win a bid for State. The program they went through was Rape, Aggression, Defense (RAD). The class instructor, Erin Lehman taught the girls how to defend themselves if they were to ever be attacked by a man that was planning to hurt them. The irst three day of the class the girls learned techniques on how to get away if a man were to come up behind you and grab you, try to strangle you, try to lead you away, grab you by the wrists, or how to get away if he were to get you to the ground. Girls were also taught how to yell, kick, punch, and hit properly. They were also shown where and how to hit the aggressor to get him to leave you alone the quickest. On the fourth day students got to test out the techniques they learned all week in simulation. This is where the girls got to see how successful they really could be if they were put in the situation where they had to defend themselves in a ight. For this part of the training the girls tested their skills on a trained instructor from Blackburn college near St. Louis. Mr. Anthony Solano, a certiied RAD instructor, suited up and let the girls give their best effort to get away. “You girls did really well, and I mean really well. I am so proud of you,” Erin commented on how the girls did with their simulation drills. After the simulations were all over, Erin and Mr. Solano sat the girls down and explained a little more about the RAD program. Both the instructors were trained and certiied in Washington D.C. Mr. Solano talked about the experience of wearing the suit and how realistic it is. “It does hurt,” Mr. Solano commented about whether or not he could feel the hits through the padding. “So remember if you were to be attacked you really would have the advantage of surprise and the know how to do something.” A comment from Mr. Palmer really covers the whole weeks experience, “The girls worked really hard. They can inluence our thoughts, feelings, and even what we wear. When someone is feeling depressed or happy, they choose an artist and a CD that they can relate to at that very moment. As more and more artists and trends become popular with the often ickle fans, increasing numbers of performers are being forced out of the entertainment business, creating a revolving door of entertainers. Over the last ten years many have come and gone. Some went as quickly as they came, with the ever present one hit wonders. Who could forget the lone hits of “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baha Men and the always remembered “Macarena.” On the other end of the spectrum are those who are legends and will always be a part of society. That goes for all the different types of music. The Ring was a movie that the previews didn’t really give you an idea of what the movie was about. The basic plot of the movie was that whenever people watch a certain video tape, within a week they die. That was given away right from the beginning. However, there was a more to this movie then suspected. The Ring is about a woman named Rachel, a respected journalist, whose niece just mysteriously died. After hearing about this video that her niece and several of her friends watched while on weekend getaway at a mountain resort, Rachel becomes involved. Her curiosity peaks when she inds out that the others who watched this video also died mysterious deaths. Her life becomes more complicated when her small son tells her that he sees things, kind of like in the Sixth Sense, and that he knew his In rock there is KISS, and the great Nirvana, who still remain as legends even in the death of lead man Kurt Cobain. In pop, there are Madonna and Janet Jackson. R&B has Mary J Blige. And in rap there are P. Diddy and JayZ. With all of these artists one thing remains the same. They are always welcomed back by fans when releasing a new CD or embarking on a new tour. Then there are those that many consider to be legends in the making as long as they work wisely. And once again, this is in every type of music. Rock has Linkin Park, pop has Britney Spears, and rap has Nelly. There will always be those who try, but few who succeed. There will always be music around influencing those who listen. I can’t wait for the next ten Page 13 December 2002 Rachel decides to find this video--and she succeeds. After viewing the video, she receives a call that just has the cryptic message of “One week.” She decides to do her own investigation into the video. What she reveals is the story of a twisted family and of the little girl that they adopted years ago, and all of the mayhem that she caused before and after her death. The Ring is not what I expected. It is actually better. When seeing the previews, it seems to be another over-hyped movie that teenagers are expected to go see, and then be disappointed. However, those expectations were wrong. The movie actually has a half way decent plot and story line that makes sense.
