Staff Helps With Cost Savings
Once again, our Northmont staff has put students first and will
experience a salary freeze for the 2013-14 school year. Over
a three-year period, there have been no step increases and all
Northmont employees are paying more out-of-pocket for health
and dental coverage. Insurance contributions and co-pays have
increased. Thanks to these and other cost-saving measures, the
District has been able to maintain financial stability.

Northmont has a great partnership with our local law enforcement agencies to provide
School Resource Officers in our buildings. Current safety features in place at Northmont
City Schools include:
*SROs at High School and Middle School
*SRO presence at all elementary buildings
*Locked doors
*Buzz-in systems
*Additional cameras in all buildings
*Purchased new 2-way safety radios for the
entire district
Along with the additional security systems, our Safety Committee has been meeting
regularly to update our safety plans in the event of any kind of emergency. The team has
reviewed plans including fire, tornado, or a threat of violence. Our entire staff
participated in a scenario-based drill on August 30 presented by the City of Englewood,
City of Clayton, and City of Union Public Safety Departments. It is important for our
community to know there are plans in place for evacuation and relocation of our students
as the situation dictates. In the case of an evacuation or relocation, parents will be
informed through our One Call Now system and Facebook as to where to go for
reunification with their students.

We are so excited to be embarking on a new school year! There are so many changes that I can’t even
begin to list them all. Fabulous staff members have retired and wonderful, fresh faces have been hired
with big shoes to fill. The construction going on presents change every single day, whether the change
is to the parking pattern at the high school or the change in landscape along Route 40. There are many
changes to the State Report Card and the State Budget and ways we evaluate staff. The point is that
through all these changes, one thing remains the same: Our dedication to educate the children of this
community and provide positive role modeling for them as they grow and prepare to make their mark
in the world will continue to be a constant. Let’s have a great school year!

Federal Nutrition Guidelines
Change Lunch Business
This fall, Northmont and Miami Valley CTC school cafeterias will continue to
meet the tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that
meals are healthy and well balanced and provide students all the nutrition they
need to succeed at school. Beginning last school year, school lunches had to meet
additional standards requiring:
• Age-appropriate calorie limits
• Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)
• A wider variety of vegetables, including
dark green and red/orange vegetables and
legumes
• Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must
be fat-free)
• More whole grains
• Less sodium
Music Program Changes
In the interest of providing quality music instruction to students, Northmont
was able to recall two music teaching positions that were reduced in the 2010-11
school year. This makes it possible to:
*Expand General Music classes for elementary students from one semester to a full year
*Hold sixth grade band and orchestra instruction before school in each elementary building instead of the students being bused to the High School or Middle School to participate in band or
orchestra
*Build younger students’ skills in preparation for the Middle School and High School programs
Music is an integral teaching tool that strengthens skills in other areas, such as
math, reading, and memory. Northmont has always been known as a district with
strong music programs, and it is important to continue that tradition.

Construction Update
The construction projects are in full swing, and anyone driving by can see the
changes taking place on a daily basis.
At the Kleptz Early Learning Center, the walls have gone up, and the brightly
colored interior walls are almost all in place. Each wing will have a different
color theme to help our little ones identify their classroom areas. The exterior
brick is being applied and the roof joists are in place. The weather has been
cooperating and the building is on schedule to be “under roof” by fall/early
winter. At that point, the interior work can continue throughout the winter
with weather no longer being as much of a factor.
At the High School, the construction fences have gone up and the math
modules have been delivered. Some preconstruction work must be done
before the modules are move-in ready, but that work is moving along. The
new parking lots are in use and everyone is showing patience with the new
configuration. Once the pre-work is completed, the math wing is scheduled
for abatement and demolition. For pictures of the construction process, please

Once again, when traveling around the High School area for events or sporting
activities, remember to exercise patience and be aware of signs and personnel
directing drivers around the complex. The safety of our students and their
families is of the utmost importance.
