The Coastal Road
I
f we are to give the philologist and historian Ramón Menéndez Pidal the credibility
with which he is normally attributed, the so-called Coastal Road starting from Irun
and running alongside the Cantabrian Sea to the western boundaries of Biscay was
one of the primitive pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostela, even prior to some of
those which history would have as authentic. Even in the first decades of devotion to
Saint James - in the 9th and 10th centuries, there is evidence of pilgrims having chosen
this route, which followed roads that had been established and important since far-off
times. At the very beginning of the tradition of travelling to Santiago de Compostela,
and in view of the fact that the part of Navarre which the pilgrims had to cross after
coming over the Pyrenees was threatened by the Muslims, the way along the
Cantabrian coast was undoubtedly the safest. When the Inland Road started gaining
importance in the 13th century, as a consequence of the road improvements brought
about by the incorporation of Gipuzkoa to Castile, the Coastal Road stood up well to
the competition, and continued to make a living from both the pilgrims who chose this
road in Irun as well as those who, coming from far-off countries, landed at any of the
ports in Gipuzkoa or Biscay which were dotted along the following route.
The first stretch through Gipuzkoa was nevertheless far from a pleasant stroll. From
the Bidasoa estuary to the border with Biscay, the rivers Oiartzun, Urumea, Oria, Urola
and Deba break up the coastline on reaching the sea. Many travellers were strongly
marked, as can be seen from the notes written by Hugo de Oporto, Bishop of Portugal,
during his journey in 1120, by “the roughness of the area, the barbarity of its
inhabitants and the unbridled fury of the many branches of the Ocean”.
On the other hand, we have to recognize the fact that the complications of Gipuzkoa’s
steep coastline disappear on entering Biscay through Markina-Xemein and coming to
the calm valleys of the Lea-Artibai region.
This route combines the coastal and agricultural, urban and rural aspects of the
Basque Country. Having followed the first stretch through Gipuzkoa, already wellknown for its tourist attractions, it takes us to parts of Biscay which, on having remained relatively remote from the more important points of communication, are a pleasant source of surprise.
The greenest areas in the Basque Country lie along this route. Those
which are already known, and those which still have to be discovered.

Old villa (town) granted with
the Carta Puebla by King
Alphonse VIII in 1203. It is
located on a hill near the
mouth of Bidasoa River. One
of the accesses is through
the Gate of Santa Maria , the
main access of the wall, presided by the town’s coat of
arms.
Among other buildings inside
this walled enclosure, we
should stand out the Town
Hall, the Casadevante
Palace, and the Torre Alta
House. The Parish Church of
Our Lady of La Asunción, in
Gothic style, was built between the 15 th and 16 th centuries.
It has a Latin Cross plan with
three naves covered by groin
vaults and three apses at the
head.
Once at the Plaza de Armas ,
the Castle of Carlos V is
located at the end of the
Mayor Street. A building
attributed to Sancho Abarca
of Navarra. With square plan,
a central courtyard and
three-metre thick walls it
witnessed many sieges, the
most famous in 1638. At present, is has become a
Tourism Parador (state tourist hotel).
In the outskirts of the town,
we will find the small
Hermitage of Santiagotxo,
dating from the 15 th century
and whose inside hides a
carving of Santiago
Matamoros.
The Sanctuary of Guadalupe ,
closely linked to maritime
religiosity since it was built
in 1585. Its inside hide a
Gothic Virgin dating from the
15th century; some people
say that it was the figurehead
of a ship. From here, we can
enjoy a beautiful view over
the Txingudi Bay.
LEZO
It is located in the foothills of
Mount Jaizkibel, near the
Oiartzun River mouth and
next to the Pasaia Bay.

seafarers’ houses are built
opposite quay, while the historic quarter of San Pedro is
distributed in three different
urban sectors: the San Pedro
Street, the Herriko Plaza, and
the Tirrin-Tarran site.
Parish Church of San Pedro,
finished in 1774, has three
equally high naves and a
polygonal apse, in the same
style as the Basque Country
hall churches. The façade
preserves the image of San
Pedro.
The Faro de la Plata is located on a crag at the foot of
Mount Ulia, in a extraordinarily beautiful place.

This stage presents different difficulties for cyclists. The ascent to Mount Jaizkibel
can be avoided taking the GI-3440 road. From Pasai San Pedro to San Sebastian,
it is better to go through the streets linking them.
Hondarribia’s Old Town is located on a height from which
one can enjoy the Bidasoa River mouth.

We start from the Kaizarra pier and, through the Santiago Street, we go towards the historic
quarter to get to the Plaza de Armas, where we will find the Castle of Carlos V. We go down
through the Mayor Street towards the Gate of Santa Maria, to go towards the Hermitage of
Santa Engrazia. To our right, some stairs lead us to an asphalted track towards the hermitage of Santiagotxo, the linking point for the Coastal and the Inner Roads, coming from Irun.
We start our way up to Mount Jaizkibel. We will soon turn to the right and, later, to the left,
through the track leading to the GI-3440. After leaving behind a farmhouse, we go on
through a cement track passing by some water tanks. We take a junction to the right and,
just before getting to the Txominenea Farmhouse, some stairs will lead us to the Hermitage
of Santa Barbara, and a little higher, the Sanctuary of Guadalupe.

We take the forest track starting from the Sanctuary. It turns to the left to skirt round the southern hill of Mount Jaizkibel. At this point, we should take the path that goes through the
crest line and, ascending, links the old towers of Erramuz and Santa Barbara, until reaching
the haughty summit of Mount Jaizkibel. There, we will find the remains of the old Castle of
San Enrique. After enjoying the extraordinary views surrounding us, we continue through a
path going through the crest and leading us to a hillock, a bit lower, after passing by other
two towers. At this place, we leave the crest line and take the path to the left. After crossing
the track, we will go down to the Olazar Farmhouse. From here, a cement track will lead us
to the historic quarter of Lezo.

We go through the narrow and paved San Pedro Street until we find some steep stairs to our
right. Passing by the graveyard, the stairs go up suddenly until they end at the access to the
lighthouse. Later, we will towards the La Plata Lighthouse on a smooth slope up and enjoying amazing views over the port.

We cross the village and go towards the neighbouring Pasai Donibane through the promenade by the GI3440 road. The picturesque Donibane Street leads us to the pier, near the shrine.
There we will use the motorboat service and cross the port estuary in order to get to Pasai
San Pedro.

Plata Lighthouse
A good and busy coastal path starts from the left side of the lighthouse esplanade. It goes
parallel to an old water course. Along the way, we can see the old aqueduct bridges. We
follow this paved path up to a track to our right. We will follow this track, with no detours,
and get easily to the Ulia Park. At the park entrance, we leave to the left the access to the
refuge and start our way down through the old railway that, from Ategorrieta, went up to
Ulia. We go down through an easy track and continue walking until we see San Sebastian.
Next to the Arbola Farmhouse, the track becomes asphalted and we take the first junction to
the right and go down through a steep slope up to the coast line. We pass by the Kursaal
building and, after crossing the bridge, we get to San Sebastian’s Boulevard, the finish of
this stage.

Of uncertain origin, it is known
that it already existed in 1016,
when King Sancho el Mayor
donated the villa (town) to the
Monastery of Leire. Formerly,
this place occupied what we now
know as the Old Part, which was
surrounded by a wall. It was
defended by the fortress located
in Mount Urgull, the location of
the destroyed 12th century Castle
of La Mota. That is the basis of
the current Monument to the
Sacred Heart.
Through the maritime promenade of La Zurriola, we can access
the city passing by the Kursaal
Congress Centre, designed by
the prestigious Rafael Moneo,
the Victoria Eugenia Theatre,
and the Maria Cristina Hotel, in
order to get to the Boulevard, a
modern promenade built over
the old walls, like the market of
La Brecha.
The port facilities witnessed San
Sebastian’s trading life from the
Middle Ages to the end of the 20th
century. Its surroundings hide
the Aquarium and the Naval
Museum.
The Town Hall occupies the old
Gran Casino building, built in
1882. The building, surrounded
by the Alderdi-Eder Gardens,
has become one of the city’s distinguishing marks.
The San Telmo Museum was an
old Dominican Convent until
1836, and then became the artillery barracks. It preserves a
Renaissance cloister dating from
the 16th century and the rooms
are the venues for painting and
ethnographic exhibitions.
The Church of San Vicente is the
oldest building in the city. In
Gothic style, the porch houses a
Pieta by the sculptor Jorge de
Oteiza.
The Basilica of Santa Maria del
Coro is a baroque site of
Romanesque origin. It was
modified and restored in the 17th
century.
Cathedral of El Buen Pastor, a
clear example of Neo-gothic
style with some Germanic features.
The Miramar Palace dominates
the bay. In English style, it was
the royal family’s summer residence between 1893 and 1930.
At the end of the promenade,
after passing the Ondarreta
Beach, we find the Wind Comb, a
sculptural work by Eduardo
Chillida.
Before getting to the nucleus of
Igeldo, we find the Amusement
Park, located on one of the highest parts of the city. From
there, we can enjoy magnificent
views over the whole bay and
over the city. The nucleus of
Igeldo is organised around the
promenade of the Coastal Royal
Road. The Church of San Pedro
is a very simple building, with
just one nave, a tower on one of
its sides, and Gothic windows.
Almost at the border with Orio,
we fin the Medizorrotz Fort, on a
summit. The remains there date
back from the Carlist Wars.

This town has a great seafaring
tradition, evidenced in the significance of its port. The urban
area was developed around the
Parish Church of San Nicolas
de Bari, finished at the beginning of the 17th century and
replacing a smaller church. The

style and preserves a Gothic
Christ. The two access gates
are linked to each other by a big
external portico, reflecting the
town’s former role of bastiontemple.
The Hermitage of San Juan
Bautista, located over the
beach, dates from the 18th century, although it was erected
over another building, of unknown origin. Already in Zarautz,
we will find the Hermitage of
San Martin de Ibaieta, a 16th
century simple building with
one nave.

There are no important difficulties from San Sebastian to Orio. Nevertheless, it is
recommendable to go up to Igeldo by road and go down by a paved track. From
Orio to Zarautz, it is recommendable to take the road leading to Oribarzar Beach.
The descent will be through the access road to the campsite.
From the Igueldo Amusement Park, one can enjoy the
best view on La Concha Bay.

We start from the Town Hall to begin our route at the Paseo de la Concha. At the end of the
Ondarreta Gardens, we take the road going up to Igeldo. After a hundred metres, we take a
detour to the right in order to ascend through the Marbil path towards the Erregenea residential area, which we will leave to our left while going up the stairs. A promenade ends at
the road located at the residential area’s rear side. We continue up to the first bend and,
there, we leave the road to take a path beneath a vegetable vault. This path ends at the
access way to the Berakotegi Farmhouse. We go on walking and get to the junction of the
road to Igeldo. We will get to the Igeldo Amusement Park and continue by the road until we
get to the Buenabista Restaurant. There, we will take a path that, after crossing a residential
area, links to the Marabieta path. We follow this path up to the junction that leads as to
Igeldo.

We leave the way up to the urban area behind and follow the rural paths parallel to the
coast, near the Iranguen and Egiluze farmhouses. A bit later, and always following our signs,
we follow a path up to the Lusarbe farmhouses, already in the town of Orio, until we get to
the asphalted track. This track starts to go down, passes by the Munioeta Farmhouse, and
gets to a sharp bend, where we leave it to take an old sandstone track to our right. This will
lead us to the Aganduru Farmhouse. On asphalt again, we get to the access road of the
Antilla Beach, in Orio; we cross it to take a short cut that allows us to avoid a bend on the
road. We pass beneath the A-8 highway and, immediately, we get past a sharp gradient to
our right and end at the Hermitage of San Martin, where we start our way down towards
Orio’s historic quarter.

We access the N-634 road through the stairs, in order to cross the bridge over the estuary.
We skirt the estuary passing by different buildings. We cross the Altxerri irrigation channel,
already in Aia, and pass by the Aitzondo Restaurant; next, we cross the road by the estuary’s
left bank up to the Oribarzar Beach and, finally, we get to the Hermitage of San Pablo, where
we take a road to our right that will lead us to the estuary’s mouth. Next, we go beneath the
A-8 highway to get to the Txurruka refuge. We leave the Torretzo and Oribar farmhouses to
our left and, through a cement track; we go up towards a crossroads, among txakoli vineyards. We go on through the promenade, which starts to go down near the Zarautz campsite, and enjoy the amazing views over this coastal town. A track draws a bend and, in the
middle of the hill, it goes smoothly down until it ends at the Talai-Mendi campsite. From
here and after turning to the right near the Agirrebekoa Farmhouse, we get to the road. We
get into Zarautz through the Nafarroa Street, take the pedestrian Mollarri Street, and get to
the Hermitage of San Pelaio. We take the Nafarroa Street again through the Zinkunegi Street
and, after passing by the Franciscan Convent, turn to the left to go towards the historic quarter, where we will finish this stage.

Recognised as a villa since
the 13th century, its laws obliged the fishermen to give part
of the hunted whales to the
royal stock. Since then, the
town’s coat of arms shows a
whale.
The Hermitage of San Pelaio
is located at the entrance of
the town. This 16th century
building was destroyed and
later rebuilt.
The Renaissance Narros
Palace is located sea-front
and dates from 1536.
The Parish Church of Santa
María la Real is on one of the
town’s borders. It dates from
the 16th century and hides an
amazing baroque altarpiece, a
Gothic image of the patron
saint, and the remains of an
interesting archaeological
site. Attached to the parish
and acting as its bell tower,
we find the 14th century
Zarautz Tower , a typical
example of Basque defensive
architecture and the current
axis of the town. At present, it
houses the History Museum
and preserves an important
medieval necropolis one can
visit.
One of the best examples of
Gipuzkoan tower is the Luzea
Tower, in civil Gothic style. It
was built in the 15th century
with three plans in masonry
stone.
Outside the Vista Alegre Park,
we find the Hermitage of
Santa Barbara , rebuilt in 1707
and located in the rural Santa
Barbara Quarter.
Town with great seafaring tradition emerging from the
isthmus of Mount San Antón .
On its foots, we find the port
facilities.
The narrow streets with vaulted passages of clear medieval character surround the
Gothic Church of San
Salvador , one of the oldest
buildings in the town. One
may be surprised at the
architectural adaptation that
was necessary to accommodate the building to the land.
A century ago, the rural
Askizu Quarter was an essential passage, since the road
started in front of the doors of
the Getaria citadel.
The small hermitage of San
Prudentzio has a Gothic façade, decorated with geometric
motifs. On its part, the
Church of San Martín de
Tours , Gothic although of
medieval origins, preserves a
calvary with life-size figures.
ZUMAIA
Medieval town made up of fishermen and noble houses
settled around the fishing
port and the Parish Church of
San Pedro. The church, built
in the 13th century and extended in the 15th and 16th centuries, is in Basque Gothic style
and looks like a fortress. Its
colour is pink due to the
limestone typical of this area.
The High Altarpiece, dating
from the 16th century, has a
Flemish triptych and another
Gothic triptych.

The Hermitage of Santiago,
used as a hospital for pilgrims, and the Zuloaga
Museum , the painter’s house,
are located by the Beach of
Santiago. The museum exhibits a valuable collection of
works by Goya, El Greco, and
Zurbaran, among others.
On our way to the lighthouse,
we find the 16th century
Hermitage of San Telmo , with
an outstanding wooden double choir.
On the road to Santiago itself,
we find the Hermitage of
Andre Maria de Arritokieta ,
preserving a typical 16th century Spanish-Flemish triptych.
Itziar , a quarter in Deba, is a
pleasant urban area with
Basque rural architecture.
Here one can enjoy beautiful
views over the sea and over
the Sanctuary of Our Lady of
Itziar, subject of the devotion
of fishermen, seafarers, and
pilgrims since centuries ago.
The current building dates
from the 16th century and preserves remains of a previous
temple. The inside hides the
Virgin of Itziar, dating from
the 13th century, and an amazing high altarpiece in plateresque style.
The Hermitage of San Roque ,
located on the old coastal
road between Itziar and Deba,
is devoted to Deba’s patron
saint.

From the beginning of the stage up Zumaia it is recommended to ride by the N634 coastal road due to the steep slopes. It is possible to cover the second half of
the stage by bike, except for an ascending section to the Itziar Height, which
should be covered by the N-634 road too.
The coast section between Zumaia and Deba is characterised by its cliffs
and the tidal platform, a pilgrimage place for biologists from all the world.

From the Hermitage of San Martin, we go on through a path leading us to the Arano
Farmhouse. At a junction, we choose the track to our right. After a narrow pass, we start our
way down towards Zumaia, which we can already see. Downhill, we leave a eucalyptus plantation behind to the left and, enjoying the exceptional views over the Orroaga cove, we go
down to the N-634 road. Once we have crossed the road, a path will lead us to a pedestrian
bridge over the Urola River, after passing by the Zuloaga Museum and the Hermitage of
Santiago. Just after crossing this bridge, we go down to the Gernika promenade; we go
through it and then cross the Narrondo irrigation channel through another pedestrian bridge.
Now, we get into Zumaia’s urban area.

We leave the town through the Herrerieta Street; then, we follow the Askizu road until we get
to the farmhouses of Gaintza and Agerregitxiki. To the right of the latest, we will take the road
again and, after 600 metres, we get to the GI-3392 road. We follow it and arrive at the Azti
Farmhouse, where we take the path leading up to the Askizu Quarter.

We leave the historic quarter behind and, after walking a hundred metres towards the Meaga
Height, we turn to the right and take the Aldapeta slope, the old road linking Zarautz and
Getaria. We go through a steep slope up, leaving the Vista Alegre Quarter to our left and
observe the Hermitage of Santa Barbara, settled on a height to our right. After a short cement
track, we will see the old road again; we follow it and go up until we see the coastal town of
Getaria. We follow an asphalted track, surrounded by txakoli vineyards, until we get to the GI3391 road, which starts going down. We pass by the cemetery and, following a sharp bend,
we leave the road. Finally, we go up through the Lormendi slope, which will lead us to the
Town Hall.
We get out of Zumaia going up through the Sorazu and Arritokieta streets to reach the hermitage and the cemetery. A wide asphalted road allows us to get higher, at the same time as we
enjoy the panoramic view over Zumaia and the coast. Walking along mowing fields, we pass
by several farmhouses and, when the road turns left, we continue ahead through a path that
goes up. After skirting round a hill, we go through a steep slope to get to the Elorriaga recreational area. From here, we go the equally named quarter through an asphalted track.

We go down gradually until we get to the N-634 road; we cross it and continue through a
cement track leading to the farmhouses o the Mardari Quarter. Once on the height, we take a
detour to the right. A few metres before arriving at the Zubeltzuzar Farmhouse, we take a
track o our right, leading us to Venta de Santuaran (Santuaran Inn), near the N-634 road.
Crossing the bridge over the A-8 highway, we walk 500 metres through this road and then
take a cement track down to our right. Before getting to the Usaberartza Farmhouse, a path
allows us to go up to the Itziar Height. From there, we cross the N-634 road again and get to

Monreal de Itziar was founded
in 1294, in the reign of King
Sancho IV, on the place that we
know as Monreal de Deba.
It has an important and numerous archaeological heritage,
as it is evidenced by the sites of
the caves of Ekain, Urtiaga, and
Ermittia with important
Palaeolithic remains. The cave
paintings in the Ekain Cave
include 76 figures, being horses the most represented animals.
The mountain pass is one of
the elements that have had a
highest influence in the town’s
history, due to the significant
importance of Castilian wool
trading, which was mainly
exported to Flanders, and also
because of the iron import
from Somorrostro.
The estuary is used as a marina and the beach is surrounded by amazing mountain
landscapes. The Church of
Santa María la Real, built between the 15th and 16th centuries
in Renaissance Gothic style,
preserves a magnificent
polychrome façade dating from
the 15th century with images of
the twelve apostles. We can
enjoy the beautiful 16th century
cloister, a result of the different
extensions of the building.
The 18th century Town Hall houses a niche of St James the
Pilgrim.
Besides different traditional
houses, the historic quarter
stands out due to the blazoned
House of Bañez, the manor
houses of Aldazabal-Murgia
and Sasiola -an old tower-, and
the Chapel of Santa Cruz, loca-
ted besides one of the accesses to the town.
Formerly, the Agirre Palace
was the family house of merchants and seafarers. The
current building was erected
around 1775, using part of the
original construction.
At the beginning of the 16th
century, the lords of the
Sasiola Tower transferred this
place, the shipyard, and the
Hermitage of La Piedad to the
Franciscan Order. There they
built the Sasiola Convent, helping the poor and the pilgrim.
It was abandoned due to the
19th century desamortizaciones
(sale of Church lands). At present, there are remains of the
cloister and the convent; moreover, the church is still standing, hiding a valuable 18th century altarpiece.
MUTRIKU
On the way to Mutriku, the
sober building of the
Hermitage of El Calvario de
Maia if left behind.
This place has the title of villa
(town) since 1209, when King
Alphonse VIII of Castile granted
it the Carta Puebla. Mutriku’s
urban planning is based on the
quays: the streets are positioned to face that direction, and
end into the port. Nowadays,
this is a fishing village with a
great charm and with one of
the oldest ports in Gipuzkoa.
The Gothic Berriatua Tower is
located in the surroundings, as
well as the 17th century palaces
of Zabiel and Galdona and the
18th century Montalibet Palace.
Near then, the Neo-classical
Church of Our Lady of La

Asuncion shows a great flight
of steps and a masonry-stone
façade.
The Church of San Andres, the
oldest temple in Gipuzkoa, is
located in the Astigarribia rural
quarter. It was built on a former pre-Romanesque temple
and it still preserves Visigoth
and Romanesque remains. It is
located near the old road that
was accessed from
“Molletxua”, loading and unloading site over the Deba River.
The Olatz rural quarter is hidden among the mountains over
the Olatz Valley, very near the
border with Biscay. The inhabitants are distributed in spread
farmhouses. The Hermitage of
San Isidro de Olatz is the most
distinguishing element of this
place.
The Ameikutz Stele is on the
border between Mutriku and
Mendaro. It has a curious
decoration with two crosses;
one of them shows an inscription with a circle, whose meaning is still unknown. The
Arnoate Farmhouse is located
on the border between Biscay
and Gipuzkoa; it belongs o the
municipality of Mendaro.

From Deba to Olatz, it is recommendable to follow the GI-638 road towards
Mutriku and, then, go up through the GI-3562. The second half of this stage can
be followed through paved tracks, starting one’s way down from Gorostolamendi
to Larruskain, and continuing through the BI-4403 to the BI-633, and then get to
Markina-Xemein.
The fishing village of Mutriku has a big charm and its
port is one of the oldest in Gipuzkoa.

SASIOLA OPTION
We get out of the town through the promenade near the Deba River up to the Mutriku Bridge.
There, we follow the N-634 road, towards Bilbao. After passing by some buildings, we take a
path to our left and go towards the access road to the Sasiola Hospital, about 3 km further.
We cross the N- 634 and go down to the Sasiola Convent to get to a path following the Deba
River course until we get to the N-634 bridge. Next, we take the GI-3230 road to our right and
follow it until we arrive at the Church of San Andres de Astigarribia. We take the GI-3230
again and, a few metres further, we turn left and take the old road to go down through different tracks among pinewoods towards the Aparain Hillock. (7.9 km.)

EL CALVARIO OPTION
We get out of Deba through the Mutriku Bridge, leaving the GI-638 road. A bit later, we pass
by a block of flats and take a cement track to our left and, after a few metres, another track to
our right. After a step slope up, we leave the cement through the access way to the Buztiñaga
Farmhouse. Following to our right up, this way leads us, through a plain and a small forest,
to a cement track and a crossroads, where we turn left. Another track through the northern
hill of Mount Maiako Gaina leads us to the Pikoaga Farmhouse on a flat path. Then, we follow
another path until we go up to the Hermitage of El Calvario of Maia. After freshening up at
the fountain and enjoying the view over the coast, we continue our way towards Olatz, crossing the GI-3230 road and taking the Arnope Pelota Court as reference point. Next, we pass
by the Eizagirre Farmhouse and go down towards a hillock. We follow a track and then take,
after a sharp bend, a way to our right, which will lead us to Aparain junction through a holmoak wood. (5.5 km.)
After leaving the Hermitage of San Isidro behind, we get to a junction and take a cement track
to our right, which goes parallel to a brook. We start our way up among pinewoods until we
get to the Gorostolamendi Hillock, border between Biscay and Gipuzkoa. We turn left and,
through a track crossing conifer and eucalyptus plantations, we skirt round Jangoikomendi to
go down to another cement track that, after passing by the Damukorta Farmhouse, leads us
to the Arnoate Farmhouse.

This is the perfect place for having a rest. Less than 100 metres from the Arnoate Farmhouse,
we take a diversion to our right that will lead us to the Sakoneta Farmhouse skirting round
the hill through forest tracks among pinewoods. From here, we continue our way through the
track starting besides the farmhouse until we find a wide gravel soil, which comes from the
Urkaregi Height. We continue ahead until we arrive at the Amulategi Farmhouse, where we
go on through a track down among pinewoods. We go down until finding another track that,
after leaving a farmhouse to the left, ends into a cement track, which we follow on a steep
slope down. On a hillock, we leave the way to turn right through a track on a steep slope
down. At the bottom of the valley, we take a way to our left to get to Markina’s Square, after
passing by some of the singular buildings in this area, such as the Barroeta Tower or the
Hermitage of San Miguel of Arretxinaga.

This is the first Biscayan town
crossed by the Road to
Santiago. Founded in 1355 by
Don Tello, Lord of Biscay, its
parallel and narrow streets still
preserve the medieval atmosphere of its old walled quarter.
The town marked an important
historical milestone in medieval pilgrimage, since it already
had a pilgrim hospital, located
in Erdotza, in the 11th century.
Among its many historic buildings, we may find the
Renaissance Barroeta Tower
and the baroque Mugartegi
Tower.
The Church of Santa Maria,
built in the 16th century in
Renaissance style, has three
naves, one of them being the
largest in the Basque Country.
The Neo-classical graveyard is
attached to it.
Inside the historic quarter, we
may find several Renaissance
and baroque manor houses, as
well as the Chapel-Hermitage
of El Prado, dating from the
17th century.
Leaving the town towards
Gernika, we find the Carmelite
Fathers Monastery, with an
outstanding and beautiful
masonry façade.
The Chapel and the Gothic
Hermitage of Our Lady of
Erdotza, dating from the 15th
century, are located in the
outskirts. If we go a bit further,
we find the Kareaga Tower.
In this village, one of the
Bolivar family houses has been
turned into a museum, the
Simon Bolivar Museum.
The arcaded Town Hall was
built in Neo-classical style and
the Renaissance Church of
Santo Tomas, built in the 10th
century but restored in the 17th
and 18th centuries, looks like a
fortress and is completely arcaded.
We leave the village through a
paved road leading to one of
the most emblematic places in
Biscay’s Road to Santiago: the
Collegiate Church of Ziortza.
THE COLLEGIATE
CHURCH OF ZIORTZA
Founded in the 11th century, it
is managed by trappist monks
and it is the only one in Biscay.
The place, located at the foot of
Mount Oiz, reached its highest
peak in the 16th century. To the
outstanding plateresque High
Altar were added baroque
motifs and an Andra Mari
dating from the 14th century. It
includes several buildings: the
portico, the 15th century church,
with a great wooden atrium, a
square plan Renaissance cloister, the tower, and the abbot
and canons’ houses. The main
access shows a gothic façade
which probably dates from the
14th century and, next to it, a
sepulchre decorated with different motifs, such as a Santiago
Matamoros.

MUNITIBAR-ARBATZEGI.
GERRIKAITZ
This village is made up of two
population areas linked by a
Renaissance bridge, dating
from the 16th century.
The town of Gerrikaitz shapes a
hamlet around the Church of
Santa María, in Neoclassic style.
It also shows important towers,
such as the towers of Jauregi,
Bengolea, Goikolea, or Munitibar.
The Hermitage of Santiago
shows an interesting image of
St James and the Hermitage of
Santa Lucia is the place from
which, according to the legend,
the eagle took the skull to
leave it in Zenarruza.
In the Arbatzegi area, the
Neoclassical Church of San
Vicente, built in 1851 over a
former temple, stands out showing a 17th century façade.
On our way out of Munitibar,
going towards the Aldaka
Quarter, we find a small and
solitary hermitage crowning a
height, a hermitage devoted to
St James, hiding an image of
St. James the Pilgrim.

We start our way towards Gernika through the cycle lane next to the Atxondo Sports Centre.
Then, we leave it to continue by road, after crossing it through an underground passage.
After passing by the Hermitage of Our Lady of Erdotza and the Chapel of Santutxu, we take a
detour to the right, continue through a path following the river, then we get to a cycle lane.
Just after crossing the river through the Kareaga Bridge, we cross a wooden fence to our left
and follow the signs until we get to the small village of Iruzubieta.

Our way towards Bolibar goes through a track near the restaurant until we get to the farmhouses of the Altzaga Quarter. We turn right to get into a pinewood and go down towards the
Alegria fields. From here, we go down to the road and, a bit later, we leave it and cross a
bridge over the river we will see to our right. Then, we follow the path that, after passing by
the Museum of Simon Bolibar, leads us to the square. We continue ahead until we cross the
river and, once we have crossed the road, we will see the road up to the Collegiate Church of
Ziortza to our right. There, we will find a pilgrim hostelry.

We leave the Collegiate church through the asphalted track and follow the signs and the PR

The Church of Andra Maria marks the access to the old town of Gerrikaitz. We go down down
the road to Munitibar , where we cross the square to get to the Church of San Vicente Martir.
We turn left towards Gernika and take, once we have crossed the Lea River, an asphalted
track leading up to the Aldaka Quarter. We continue through this track towards Kurutzeleku, a
crossroads, where we turn right towards the Astorkigana Height. We go down to the Urnatei
Farmhouse through a path that will lead us to the farmhouses of Bekoerrota and Bulukua. To
the right of the latest one, we take a track getting into the pinewood to go down towards the
Tejeria Brook. We cross it twice and access the path leading to the Berriondo Quarter, in
Mendata. We follow the local path parallel to the Golako River up to the access road to the
Zarra Quarter. A bit later, we leave it and take a path leading us to the Gorriño Farmhouse.
Once we get to the asphalted track passing by a farmhouse, we turn right to go down to the
Zarra Quarter.

The Zarrabenta Bar-Restaurant is located at the foot of the slope leading us to the heights
point of the quarter, where we will find the Hermitage of San Pedro and the detour to the
Montalban Tower. After enjoying the views over the tower, we continue our way through the
middle of the hill until we find a section recovered from the old road linking Zarra and the
Arratzu church hamlet. We cross the most important oakwood in Urdaibai to get to the
Artzubi Bridge, from which we will go up towards the Elexalde village, in Arratzu.

Next to the Church of Santo Tomas of Arratzu we can enjoy good views over the valley, while
we have a rest under a centenary holm oak. We continue the via crucis towards the Golako
River bank, where we will find the old Olazarra Foundry. After crossing the Golako River, a
small passage of the fence indicates the beginning of a path up towards the Marmiz Quarter.
A new track starts from Marmiz and crosses many pinewoods, following the old road through
the eastern hill of Mount Burgogana. Many forest tracks cross our way before getting to the
village of Ajangiz, from which we will go down to Gernika-Lumo, following the road leading
to the old port area of Renteria. After crossing the bridge, we continue through the streets
San Juan, Ocho de Enero, and Andra Maria, until we get to the Town Hall.

Gernika, emblematic town
founded by Don Tello in 1366, is
the old Jacobean crossroads.
Moreover, it is also famous due
to the sad bombing of the
Spanish Civil War that gave
place to the famous painting by
Picasso. Its interesting Peace
Museum is worth a visit.
The site of the Assembly
House, the institutional seat of
the Biscayan Government, was
designed and built for three
aims, so it was divided into
three different spaces: the
main and central one, elliptical
and used as an Assembly Hall
and sacred temple; and two
minor spaces currently housing
the Basque Museum. The site
also includes the Hermitage of
La Antigua, the old Town Hall
of Lumo, the platform on which
the representatives took their
oaths and the “Tree of
Gernika”, around which the
representatives gathered and
under which the Lehendakari
(President of the Basque
Government) is sworn in. This
tree has become the symbol of
freedom of the Basque people.
Next to the Town Hall, we find
the Church of Santa Maria, a
great Renaissance Gothic temple crowned by a singular
belfry dominating the whole old
town. The construction started
in the 14th century and some
Renaissance extensions were
carried out during the 16th century; in the 18th century, it was
attached a narrow baroque
tower. It has a gothic façade
with a series of figures, among
which e should stand out the
figure of St James the Apostle.
Formerly, there was a pilgrim
hospital-house attached to the
building.
The Billikario Stele is located
on the border between the
municipalities of Gernika,
Erregoiti, and Muxika.
On the Gerekiz Height, within
the municipality of Morga, we
can find the Hermitage of San
Esteban of Gerekiz, a humble
restored temple in which some
Roman gravestones were discovered.

The Hermitage of El Cristo
Crucificado has an open façade
that allows seeing the inside,
as well as a portico with stone
columns, covered with groin
vaults, and dating from the 17th

This pleasant ad old village
was founded in 1376 by Don
Tello. It is filled with stone
manor houses and palace buildings.
In the Goikolexea Quarter, we
can stand out the Church of
San Emeterio-San Celedonio,
dating from the early 16th century. It was built over a former
9th century temple. It shows an
interesting Renaissance-Gothic
high altarpiece representing a
Virgin (Andra Mari) with the
Child Jesus, crowned by angels
and the apostles, including St
James, dressed with pilgrim
clothes. It also hides a
Renaissance transept.
LEZAMA
This small village of rural origin housed a building known as
“ospitala” until 1981. That building dated from 1542 and was

This stage includes three difficult sections. The first one is the ascent to Gerekiz. We
recommend you to enter through Muxika and Ugarte. From here, you can continue
up to Astoreka without difficulties; there, instead of taking the detour, continue by
road up to Goikolexalde. The last ‘trouble’ is located in the section between Lezama
and Bilbao. We suggest going up through the road ascending from Lezama to El
Vivero de Kortatxueta. Then, take the forest track leading to Mount Iturritxualde.
The two roads leaving from Gernika run along
opposite banks of the estuary.

After visiting the monumental site of Gernika-Lumo, we start our route through the Zearreta
Street up to the Lurgorri Quarter, passing by an area known as Mestikabaso. We take the
asphalted track towards Errigoiti near the Hermitage of Santa Luzia. About 100 metres after
crossing the Mikene Brook, we will see a track up to the left; it will directly lead us to the hill
range of Billikario. We go through without losing sight of our signs and of the yellow and
white marks of the PR. Just after finding a milestone near the track, we find a crossroads in
which we will turn left, going down through a path towards a local road. We continue to our
left and pass by several farmhouses through the Pozueta Quarter, in Errigoiti, without losing
our way, until we get to the underground passage of the Gernika-Mungia road. From here, we
only have to cross the road leading to Larrabetzu to get to the Hermitage San Esteban of
Gerekiz.

Next to the hermitage, we take the asphalted track to Eskerika. A bit later, we leave it and take
another track to our right, near the Landotz Farmhouse. We go down a small section and continue beside a small river until we get to a sharp bend, in which we take another track. We
turn right and get to the surroundings of the Pepiena Farmhouse. After skirting round the
farmhouse, we take a gravel track to our right; following the signs, the track will lead us to
the Aretxabalaga Height in the Morga-Larrabetzu road.
We continue carefully through this road towards Larrabetzu, until we get to the Astoreka
Quarter, where we take a detour to the left and continue through an old way towards
Goikolexalde.

After leaving the Church of San Emeterio and San Celedonio and the transept behind, we
continue towards the beautiful urban area of Larrabetzu by road; later, we will go towards
Lezama.
At this point, we will have to decide if we spend the night in the new pilgrim refuge prepared
by the Town Council or if we continue walking and cover the ten kilometres we still have up
to Bilbao.
On that same day or on the following day, we will pass by the Hermitage of El Cristo
Crucificado and, without leaving the road, get to the Church of San Martín, in Zamudio.

Next to the church, we take a detour towards the industrial state and, after passing over the
Txorierri corridor, we continue to the right near a farmhouse and then start our way up and
to the left through an old track leading to the remains of the Gaztanazabalaga Farmhouse.
We go on through an asphalted track until, we get to the road to Santo Domingo; we follow
it about 50 metres and the leave it and take a detour to the right; we will get to Mount
Iturritxualde through the Zamudio road. After passing by the recreational area, we start our
way down through a rural road and cross a pedestrian bridge over the road, leading us to

This medieval town, founded in
1300 by Diego López de Haro,
already adored St James on the
banks of the Ibaizabal River.
Pilgrims formerly accessed the
town through the Zamuadianos
road, passing besides the
emblematic Basilica of Begoña,
dedicated to the Apostle and
hermitage in origin. The
current church was built between the 15th and 17th centuries
and it was finished in the 20th
century with the construction
of the tower. It shows a marked
Gothic style with groin vaults in
its three naves.
The emblematic Mallona roads,
preserving a 19th century neoclassical triumphal arch in one
of its sections, lead to the Old
Town through a steep slope.
The town had two pilgrim hospitals: one was located in the
Ibeni Quarter and the other,
near the Church of Santos
Juanes, in the facilities now
occupied by the Basque
Museum.
The Old Town is made up of
seven streets and their cantones (narrow perpendicular
streets), the Nueva Square and
the Church of Santiago. This
parish was there before the
town was granted with the
Fueros (privileges). In Gothic
style, it was a cathedral since
1949 and it has been extended
little by little: it was restored in
the 14th and transformed in the
18th century. The High Altar, as
the striking portico, is in
Renaissance style. The Puerta
del Ángel (Angel’s Door) leads
to the Renaissance-Gothic
cloister, with groin vaults and a
rich vegetable decoration. St
James the Apostle is represented in a 1956 figure.
The Church of San Anton was
built in 1433 in Gothic style and
with Grek cross plan. It was
erected over the empty lot of
the disappeared castle and was
extended in the 16th century
with Renaissance elements. It
preserves two niches of St Paul
and St Peter. The current San
Anton bridge is located on its
rear part, while the old one
was on its front side. This bridge dates from 1894, although it
was completely rebuilt due to
the bombings of the Spanish
Civil War. These two constructions became the symbols of
the city and were included into
its coat of arms.
Following the course of the
estuary, we can see the Neobaroque Arriaga Theatre,
dating from 1890, with a façade
inspired by the París Opera
House.
The 17th century Church of San
Nicolas de Bari was built in
baroque style. It has an octagonal plan and the façade is flanked by two towers.
The world-famous Guggenheim
Bilbao Museum, by the architect Frank Gerhy, is the ensign
building of the New Bilbao and
the driving force of its urban
rebirth.
The Fine Arts Museum is located at the entrance of the Doña
Casilda Park. It mainly houses
works by great Renaissance
artists. Once we have crossed
the museum, we will get to the
Monument to the Sacred Heart.
Other interesting places in
Bilbao are the Church of San
Francisco de Asís, the Ibaigane

Palace, or the Bizkaia
Provincial Council building.
BARAKALDO
This industrial town is part of
the “Great Bilbao”. Anciently
founded, it was born as an
anteiglesia (municipality typical
of the province of Biscay) in
1051. The Roman Times came
with the working of mineral
sites and with the foundation of
the first foundries. The 19th century industrialisation created
three big iron and steel companies that, after joining, became
the Altos Hornos de Bizkaia
(Bizkaia’s Blast Furnace).
The town preserves the 13th
century of San Vicente.
In Alonsotegi, we find the
Hermitage of San Antolín de
Irauregi, with a Santiago
Matamoros.

SESTAO
Big Industrial nucleus of the
left bank of the estuary. Two
thirds of its land is occupied by
small and medium-sized companies, among them the biggest steelworks factory in
Spain. The Iglesia Park hides

Cyclists have a more comfortable route, following the left bank of the Bilbao
Estuary. We will start in the heart of Bilbao and, after taking the Uribitarte promenade, we will not leave the riverside until we get to Zorrotza, where we will take the
BI-3739 road to Sestao. Once we have got there, we will start our way down to the
estuary and will continue towards Portugalete through the promenade, offering
amazing views over the Abra.
The Bilbao Town Hall is on the banks of the Ibaizabal River, where
St James was adored even before the Middles Ages.

We get out of the Cathedral of Santiago through the Tenderia street and cross the estuary
through the San Anton Bridge. We go through the San Franisco Street towards the Zabalburu
Square. Following the Autonomia Street, we take the Basurto-Kastrexana road in order to get
to Mount Kobeta through the Altamira Quarter. Once we have got up and take a road to our
left, we leave this road and take a way down to our right. We start our way down through the
mount’s hill through several tracks until we get to the Kastrexana height. We continue our
way up and, after crossing a small tunnel, e get to the Bilbao-Balmaseda road, very near the
Diablo Bridger over the Cadagua River, the natural border between Bilbao and Barakaldo.

The councils of Güeñes and
Zalla made up the old "Salcedo
Valley,” founded in the 12th century by Count Rubio Diaz de
Asturias.
The Church of Santa María, in
transition style between Gothic
and Renaissance, was built
between the 12th and 13th centuries and rebuilt in late-Gothic
style in the early 16th century. It
preserves a beautiful Isabelline
façade with Renaissance and
Florid Gothic influences.
The Tower of the Salcedo de la
Quadra Family is one of the
best examples of early-medieval factional towers around the
16th century. The most interesting element is a fleur-de-lis
flanked by two coats of arms,
belonging to the Salcedo and
the Zamudio families.
The La Puente or Romarate
Tower, built in the first half of
the 16th century, emerges near
the Sodupe Bridge, the meeting point of the BalmasedaBilbao road and the road
coming from Artziniega. It
might formerly be a tower with
salon; currently, and due to
some restoration works in
1681, it is an austere baroque
palace preserving part of its
late-Gothic medieval tower.
ZALLA
The first documents referring
to Zalla date from the 12th century. The most outstanding
building are the three parish
churches: San Miguel, founded
in the 12th century and rebuilt in
1738, the Church of La
Visitación de la Herrera, inaugurated in 1520 and rebuilt in
1826, and Santiago de Otxaran,
separated from the Church of
San Miguel in 1524, through
rebuilt at the end of the 18th
century.
The Hermitage of San Pedro de
Zarikete, located in the shadow
of a luxuriant oak, grandson of
eh Tree of Gernika. The hermitage dates from the 16th century, although it could be older.
Its most remarkable element is
the fact that those devout people who thought to be possessed by evil spirits came to this
hermitage to be exorcised at
the foot of St Peter.
The beautiful and historic site
of Bolunburu is made up of a
tower, a hermitage, and a
foundry mill. The tower was
built in the 15th century in
popular Gothic style. The
Hermitage of Santa Ana, founded in 1610, emerges near the
tower. The Terreros Tower is
not far from here. The currently
preserved tower was founded
and built in 1420 and is part of
La Herrera monumental site,
together with the Urrutia
Palace and the Hermitage of
San Antonio de Padua,
surrounding the Royal Road.
BALMASEDA
Town founded in 1199 by Lope
Sánchez de Mena, who legally
sanctioned a commercial place
to become a market-town. The
Jews inhabited the town until
1486, when they were expelled.
It was communicated by one of
the ways of the Roman Roads,
the so-called Flaviobriga, whose
remains are still preserved.

The Old or La Muza Bridge is
the image par excellence in
Balmaseda. It ends into the
San Lorenzo Quarter, the former Jewish quarter settlement.
Built in the 12th century, it was
an essential pass in the old
road to Castile.
The Santa Clara monumental
site includes a convent that
nowadays houses the San
Roque Hotel, a church attached
to it, and the old educational
home. Both now had become
Exhibition Halls.
The Horcasitas Palaces, now
known as Buniel, dates from
the 18th century and was the
town’s former Royal Customs
House until 1841.
The San Severino Square
stands out due to the Church of
San Severino. Next to it, we
find the Town Hall, which is
also known as “The Mosque”,
since it looks like some
Mudejar works.

In the Urgozo Quarter, we can also have the chance to follow the Coastal Route, but we cross
the Kadagua River and go towards the French Route through Alonsotegi. We follow the road
up to the Hermitage of Our Lady of La Guía. There is no verge in some parts of this road section, so we should take extra precautions.
To the right of the hermitage, we take a path and, following the signs, we get to a crossroads
near the route of the old La Robla railway. It will lead us to the La Quadra Quarter, already in
Güeñes.

We start from the Santiago Cathedral through the Tendería Street and cross the estuary
through the San Anton Bridge. We go through the San Francisco Street up to the Zabalburu
Square. We continue through the Autonomia Street and take the Basurto-Kastrexana road leading to Mount Kobeta through the Altamira Quarter. Once we have reached the summit, we
take a road to our left and leave it to take a path down to our right. We start our way down
through different tracks until we get to the highest area of Kastrexana. We continue going
down and, after passing below a small tunnel, we get to the Bilbao-Balmaseda road, very
neat the Diablo Bridge over the Kadagua River, the natural border between Bilbao and
Barakaldo. (Tourist Route: See Stage 7A)
Quadra
Here, we have the chance of turning off 200 metres and visit the Tower of the Salcedo de la
Quadra Family, the old stage of factional struggles. Back to our way, we go towards Sodupe
and follow the signs to leave the urban area beside the right bank of the Kadagua River.
About 3 kilometres from here, we find the Hermitage of San Martín de Iturriaga; at a junction,
we take the path to our right and, just after crossing the Kadagua, we take the path o our left
to get to the main road towards the Güeñes Town Hall.

Next to the Town Hall, we turn right towards Zalla-Karrantza Valley and, after crossing the
Kadagua River again, we get to the Church of Santa María. We follow the sidewalk to the left

leave the road, follow the signs, and take a path ending into a roundabout near a supermarket, at the entrance of Zalla. Once we have crossed the road, always using the zebra crossing,

We follow the course of the river and cross it through the bridge, leaving the detour to the
Hermitage of San Pedro de Zarikete to the right. We immediately take a track to our right,
which will lead us to a cycle lane. We follow it until we get to an asphalted track and, after
crossing a bridge, we will get to the surroundings of the Bolunburu Foundry. Near its
remains, we find a path leading to a recreational area near the Bolunburu Tower and to the
Hermitage of Santa Ana. We continue towards Balmaseda parallel to the Kadagua River, first
through the path we are walking through and then through a road section, until we arrive at
the old schools of La Herrera, where we will turn right. Before finishing this stage, we will still
pass by the Terreros Tower, the Urrutia Palace, and the Hermitage of San Antonio de Padua.
Finally, we get into the municipality of Balmaseda through the La Magdalena Quarter, where,
if we pay attention, we will see the remains of an old road. In a few minutes, we will be at the
town’s historic quarter.

This historic town, located in
the estuary mouth, has a high
relation with port and industrial
activity.
Founded in 1322 by Doña María
Díaz de Haro, widow of Don
Juan, this is a clear example of
medieval town with a urban
planning of ordered and steep
streets, walls, church, and feudal tower; facts that relate it
directly to the Jacobean topic.
The gothic Church of Santa
Maria, dating from the 14th century, was restored during the
15th and 16th centuries. It preserves a Renaissance altarpiece with a 15th century Andra
Mari and a small altar representing Santiago Matamoros in
the Battle of Clavijo.
The Salazar Tower is a fortress-house of feudal lords
dating from the 15th century. It
dominated the estuary mouth
and its mission was the defence one of the accesses to the
hamlet.
The Puente Bizkaia (Bizkaia
Bridge), built in 1893, links the
town with Getxo. Its added
value is the fact that it was the
first transporter bridge in the
world.
ABANTO-ZIERBENA
Here we can find areas and
quarters with an indisputable
mining origin, such as Gallarta,
Putxeta, Triano, La Balaster, or
Las Calizas. Mining has been a
constant activity throughout
time, even more intense from
the end of the 19th century.
In Gallarta, we should stand
out the Corta de Bodovalle
(bordovalle Felling) and its fifty
kilometres of galleries and
underground chambers.
The Basque Mining Museum
exhibits and describes the history of traditional mining by
means of objects and pieces
belonging to miners and to the
old mines.
Different remains of mining
infrastructures are dotting
great part of the municipal
territory. Among them, the
outstanding calcining kilns of
the mines Jose and Lorenza.
MUSKIZ
Village made up of several
quarters, being the oldest the
San Julian Quarter, where we
can find the remarkable Gothic
Church of San Julian.
The Muñatones Castle and
Palace is a manor house
belonging to the Salazar
Lineage. This military building
has double walls with battlements and four round towers, a
moat, a drawbridge, and a 25
metres-high main tower. The
palace, one of the most notorious Biscayan fortresses,
dates from the 13th century and
was restored in the 15th century.
It was used as a hospital and a
hostelry. The demolished
Hermitage of San Martin was
located next to it.
La Arena, a small holiday village, allows enjoying the
Cantabrian Sea waters. It has a

beautiful spa-pergola and wooden huts in maroon and blue.
The remains of a loading platform are preserved on the
rocky crag closing the left side
of the bay. A bit further, in one
of the most beautiful spots,
one can see the route of an old
mine railway that got to that
loading platform, now turned
into a green way.
COVARON
This is the finishing line of the
Coastal Route of the Basque
Road to Santiago. In this excellent vantage point, one can
enjoy amazing views over the
Bay of Biscay. We should
remark the Amalia Vizcaína
mine, whose shaft is flooded
with water. To the left, we can
find some calcining kilns,
belonging to the old company
Mc Lennan.

From Portugalete to La Arena Beach, cyclists can enjoy about 11 km. with no roads.
Leaving the beach behind, we get to the foot of some stairs in Pobeña. It would be
good to put the bike on one’s shoulders through this promenade and enjoy the
views from above, but there is a high drop and there are many stairs. Another
option would be to take the road linking Pobeña and Covarón and join the track to
continue towards Ontón.

We take the narrow street near the church and, through the Atarazanas and Casilda Iturrizar
streets, we get to the Avenue of Carlos VII. Next, we follow a small section of the cycle lane
towards Ortuella and Trapagaran. After turning to the right near a big roundabout, we take
the cycle lane again, already in the village of Ortuella. We follow it up to La Arena Beach. This
cycle lane covers the old route of the rail tracks transporting mineral extracted from the area’s
mines.
Throughout our route, we will pass by several quarters, in which we can buy something. Next
to the cycle lane, we will find several recreational areas where we can have a rest.

After getting to the first houses in Zierbena, to the right side of the beach, we take the road to
our left and follow it until we reach the recreational area starting near a bus stop. We enter
into the recreational area to walk a little on the beach up to the metal bridge over the

After passing by the Hermitage of Our Lady of El Socorro, we take a path appearing beside a
house and goes up some stairs up to the old route of the mine railway, ending into the loading platform of La Arena. At present, this route has become a green way ending in Covarón,
from which we can enjoy unmatchable views.
