Defending the Medway and the Royal Navy Dockyards where Admiral Nelson’s flagship The Victory was built, each location was carefully chosen for their commanding position and views. The site of Fort Pitt saw another of Britain’s history-makers, Florence Nightingale, begin the first Army Medical School. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert made visits here during the Crimean War. Charles Dickens’ beloved Rochester is frequently mentioned in his novels, and the duel in The Pickwick Papers took place on the brow of Fort Pitt Hill.
