The AHTA Specialty at Premier 2007 was truly a memorable and spectacular event
this year. We had over 30 amazing coated and hairless AHT’s entered in both the licensed
and non-licensed classes, judged by the Honorable Barbara Marin. With each and every entry, it was so evident how much progress has been made with our wonderful breed. Class
after class exemplified stunning examples of not only conformationally superb examples of
our breed, but wonderfully tempered and excellent moving dogs and bitches. Congratulations to all the winners and the terrific breeders that have been working hard to improve our
breed.

The highlight of the show had to be the stud dog nonlicensed class, where many of us
got to meet Wade’s Redneck RabbleRouser for the first time. I was honored to be in the show
ring with Bonnie and Rowen and Rowdy’s other progeny, Evyl, Ruffian, Rummy, and Shiney.

President’s Message - Ryan Pingel
Briefly revisiting my prior message…
In the last President’s message, I wrote
about several things that I thought the club
should do in an effort to promote and protect the American Hairless Terrier. One
area that I find of particular importance and
where I consider progress easily attainable
is “growing our membership rolls”. The
“AHTA Breeder Gift - Free 1 Year Membership” program has already helped us to
show some growth in that area, yet I felt
that we had to work to make “becoming a
member” easier.
With the approval of the AHTA BOD, I
decided to begin developing online versions of both the AHTA New Membership and Member Renewal Applications. The availability of online applications and the option of online payment
(via PayPal) should enable us to
streamline the process of both receiving and approving applications. I
know, based on the feedback that I’ve
received from both our Secretary and
Treasurer, that it should make their
jobs easier. These online applications
are now available and ready for use
(links available on www.ahta.info).
Genetic Study Update
According to Dr. Mark Neff, the first phase
of the AHT genetic mapping study has now
been completed. We had 252 American
Hairless Terriers (coated and hairless) and
151 Rat Terriers participate to date. The
preliminary results have been interesting,
to say the least. Initially Dr. Neff mapped
the gene to a region of chromosome 29 in
the dog genome (this is out of 38 chromosomes total, not including the two sex chromosomes). Per Dr. Mark Neff, “The best
way to think about this is that we were initially searching across the entire United
States, and now we know we only need to
be searching in upstate New York.... Still
lots of work, but significant progress nonetheless.”
I then received a follow-up email stating
that his last email may have been premature. Specifically, Dr. Neff reported finding
a second marker that was showing signs of
a genetic signal. This marker was on a different chromosome (11).
Dr. Neff stated, “The preliminary gene
mapping results are interesting to us because we have detected two reasonably
strong genetic signals emanating from the
genome that indicate two genes may be
contributing to hairlessness -- I had been
HAAHTA/AHTA NEWS
assuming the trait stemmed from a single
gene (which may still turn out to be the
case). “
In order to be sure, Dr. Neff requested
additional samples from AHTs and Rat
terriers. He also needed blood samples
to test his results. Bonnie Turner was
instrumental in obtaining and sending the
needed blood work to Dr. Neff for further
analysis. Samples were taken from 2 Rat
Terriers, 2 hairless AHTs, and 4 coated
AHTs (2 that were known to carrier the
hairless gene, and 2 whose carrier status
is unknown).
We are anxiously awaiting the results as
the dual gene theory may account for the
incomplete expression of the hairless
gene in some of our dogs. In other words,
the dogs who tend to be the “hairy hairless” may not have markers on both chromosomes! The AHT and Rat terrier community will be updated as soon as further
information is available.
It is not too late to participate….if you already have the kits and haven’t sent them
in, please do so. If you need additional
kits, please let me know!

President’s Message Continued
For those of you who are placing dogs with families, please
take a second to visit the club
site and check out the Member
Application. Note that under the
Membership Type option, the
applicant may choose one of the
“AHTA Breeder Gift” options and
then include their breeder’s
name in the space provided.
As part of your new puppy information packet/contract, please
provide the new owners with a
link to the New Member Application and let them know that, with
your sponsorship, they are eligible for a “free” membership.
Once they join, it is up to all of
us to welcome them and show
them the value of being a club
member. It is our hope that they
will enjoy the club (activities and
fellowship) enough that, at the
end of their free year, they will
want to renew. Let’s all work to
see that this happens!
What’s Coming Up…
Our annual AHTA fall show
(Sept 21-23 in Hickory, NC) is
quickly approaching. The
AHTA will be hosting 5 conformation shows and 2 days of
Terrier Racing (flats and steeple races – Saturday and Sunday). We’d love to see you all
there.
As has been our custom,
“working members” will receive
reduced entry fees for the
weekend’s events. It is important to remember that the definition of “working” doesn’t consist of merely showing up. With
5 shows and 2 complete days
of racing, there is a LOT to be
done throughout the show
weekend. We hope to see the
“usual crew” along with any and
all other members who wish to
be involved.
Note also that we will be having an AHTA club meeting
Thursday evening (time and
location to be announced),
with show setup commencing
early Friday morning at the
Hickory Metro Convention
Center.
Feel free to contact myself
and/or our club/event secretary, Melissa Kidd, for additional details .

Skin Problems
By Lew Olson, PhD Natural Health, LMSW-ACP
Of all the inquiries that I receive, the most frequent questions are about itching, scratching and skin problems. This is such
a big topic, that I will only 'scratch' the surface here, but I will put in quite a few resources to pursue further information.
Skin problems can pop up suddenly, be long term or even seasonal. Dermatology is a complex field and the causes of itching, redness and rashes can be hard to diagnose. But a diagnosis is important, as that not only leads the way to the correct
treatment, but also on how to treat nutritionally and with supplements.
Causes of skin problems can come from a variety of reasons, and that is why it can be hard to diagnose. These include
allergies (food or environmental), skin parasites (mites, flea bite allergies) or from bacteria or yeast. And the problem is that
once itching, biting and scratching starts, it can spill over into bacteria or yeast, which can camouflages the true origin of
the problem.
Once a skin problem occurs, along with itching and scratching, it is important to have a skin scraping done on the affected
areas. This can show you several things. It can demonstrate if skin mites are present. A skin scraping will also tell you if
yeast and or bacteria are present. These are often not the original causes, but become opportunistic if skin sores develop.
Yeast and or bacteria can make the problem much worse, but they are easily treated.
Occasionally steroids such as prednisone are prescribed, but these drugs can make yeast problems worse. It may be wiser
to use anti-histamines for temporary relief of itching until a cause is determined.
If these results don't show anything, a blood panel and urinalysis would be helpful, to see if any underlying condition is present. Things that might cause skin problems include hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease and a few autoimmune disorders.
Trying to diagnose the problem is a lot about ruling things out, but it most often gets you to the source of the problem.
Allergies can cause itching and scratching, and these can be either environmental or food related. These can also imitate
other causes of itching.
Environmental and food allergies can have very similar symptoms, including face rubbing, eye discharge, rashes, redness
in the armpit or groin area and crusty sores. Dr Pinkston, DVM states that most often ear problems are the result of food
allergies. They may develop yeast infections, but she feels food allergies are the cause. She also reports that dogs with
allergic symptoms under a year, or that develop in mid age are most often food related allergies.
Nutrition can play an important part of the treatment plan. Whatever the cause of the itching, helping the dog with the best
nutrition will help promote better immune response and give your dog more defense to develop a better immune system. If
you are using a commercial diet, look carefully at the ingredients to make sure good animal protein sources are used and
that it doesn't contain cheap fillers. Mary Straus has an excellent website on feeding dogs, with many links and comparisons on all types of dog food, from commercial to pre-made raw diets.
http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html
Supplements can be helpful for many skin problems.
One of best things to add to your dog's diet is EPA Fish Oil Capsules. These are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which
help the skin and coat, and which also help the immune system. These are added to the diet, at about one capsule
(180 EPA, 120 DHA) per 10-20 lbs of body weight daily.
Adding Probiotic Powder is helpful, especially when the dog has been on antibiotics. These help replace the flora and
fauna that are lost during antibiotic use. Probiotics also help fight yeast infections.
Bertes Immune Blend contains antioxidants and vitamins for the immune system, including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and
B complex. It also has enzymes and acidolphilus, which is helpful for allergic conditions.
Tasha's Skin and Hair Support is an herbal tincture that is taken in the gum line, that contains nettles which helps to
reduce itching and reduce inflammation.
Derma Dream Salve helps heal skin irritations and is healing to the skin. Another good topical is the Thayers Witch
Hazel and Aloe. The witch hazel helps to kill bacteria and temporarily stop the itching. The Aloe vera is cooling to the
skin and helps the skin to heal.
For environmental allergies, bathing is important to wash the allergens from the skin. The Purepet Shampoo is oatmeal based, so it has a drying action to sooth the skin and contains herbs to help with healing. It is also helpful to
rinse after bathing with a solution of half white vinegar and water. The vinegar helps kill yeast and make sure all
shampoo residues are removed.
When it comes to yeast problems, two good products are the HAC Yeast and Fungal, and the Tasha’s Olive Leaf Extract. The Yeast and Fungal contains a blend of herbs to help fight stubborn yeast infections and is given a few drops
daily, mixed with a small amount of food daily. The Olive Yeast Extract also helps fight yeast and bacteria when
given orally. It can also be used as poultice on the skin to help with relief from rashes.
Remember to keep the dog's bedding, yard and flooring in the house clean. Treating skin problems is about treating
the dog internally, keeping the skin and coat clean and also the environment.
Nutrition is also important for maintaining healthy skin and coat. Trying to use foods with limited amounts of ingredients or even removing grains can help in some situations. For more information on preparing home made diets, look
at the recipes here:

Premier 2007 Terrier Races
Terrier Races at the 2007 UKC Premier Dog Show in Kalamazoo, Michigan were particularly memorable. Increased interest in
Terrier Racing was evident by the number of breeds that were entered. In addition to Jack Russell Terriers, Rat Terriers and
American Hairless Terriers, we had Australian Terriers, Border Terriers, a Patterdale Terrier, and a Dachshund.
This year’s event attracted more spectator interest, thanks in part to the Dog Sports event being located nearby. Such close proxiimity was a mutually beneficial arrangement for each event. People came to see one event then went over to check out the other.
Another big plus for everyone was that UKC approved our setup in a new location that provided more shade for the racers and
spectators.
Bonnie and I had an especially good time. We were able to bring our RV and camp at the site, a first time for us at Premier. We
arrived Tuesday evening, and had all day Wednesday to get ourselves and the Terrier Race track setup. Everything was ready to
go for the ARTA Specialty race on Thursday, with no last minute “hurryups.” Also, a really nice part for us was that we were
able to camp right next to the Terrier Race track, so there was more time to enjoy visiting with our friends.
Friday was an off day from the scheduled events (ARTA on Thursday and Premier on Saturday and Sunday). Because we were
camped next to the track, we were able to spend time doing fun runs with owners and handlers who were anxious to see if their
dogs would race. Several folks got to see their dog learn the fun and excitement of chasing the lure.
UKC and Purina have been very supportive of our event, furnishing nice ribbons and awards. A highlight of the event was a series of races sponsored by Purina, providing awards for the fastest dog in each of the major classes: Regular class and Champion
class; Dachshund, JRT, and Open. After those races, there was a “Fastest Dog” race, which ran the fastest dogs in each category;
Dachshund, JRT, & Open, against each other to determine “The Fastest Dog”. In addition to the Fastest Dog trials, there was a
match race on Sunday between the Pingel’s coated AHT ‘Rummy’ and the fastest JRT. Rummy won, amid cheers, shouts and
applause. This year’s competition produced some great races!
I must say a heartfelt ‘Thank You!’ to those who made the 2007 Premier Terrier Race such a great success.
This was a milestone event, thanks to the experience and efforts of our judge, Richard Hunter and his wife Chris. The knowledge gleaned from 17 + years of Terrier Racing was applied to demonstrate how a race can be run with fairness and efficiency.
With the support of people like Richard and Chris, we will see UKC Terrier Racing move forward to become the primary performance and Total Dog event it deserves to be.
The Schulers, Bruce, Shelly, Collette and Shannon were there as always, to set-up, help with the race, handle dogs for racers, do
paper work and then teardown and pack up. Thanks Bruce, you are the “premier” lure operator at Premier, and any other race
we’re fortunate enough to have you!
The Pingels, Ryan, Karyn & Aaron helped make it happen. Ryan was our chief race box steward, helping things run smoothly,
and Karyn turned in an outstanding performance as recorder; “the job is never finished until the paperwork is finished.” Karyn,
you got it done! Aaron took his turn returning the lure and loading the boxes, in spite of dealing with a painful hernia. Thank you
Ryan, Karyn and Aaron!
Walt Pasco and Joe Dannemiller, you guys were right there, doing the work of setting up and tearing down. Thank you very,
very much.
Lexie Blair did her usual fabulous job of taking the best photos to be seen anywhere! When needed, she’d put her camera down,
and run the lure and catch racers. If you haven’t seen her photos yet, go to Lexies’ site at http://imageevent.com/3bear .
Of course, no race event is possible without a cadre of catchers. This “hands on” group is responsible for catching the dogs as
they come through the barrier. Melissa Kidd, Kathie Treacey, Kathy Russell, Bonnie Turner, Stacy McWilliams, Donna Sullivan, Helene Sullivan and Barbie Trammell, thank you all, for having so much fun doing a hot, sweaty job!
None of this would have happened without the help of some of the hardest workers I know!
I especially want to thank the owners and handlers who entered and raced their dogs. Without them, there would BE no Terrier
Race. A most sincere “Thank You!
I look forward to seeing all of you at the next race!
