Week 9 Newsletter
Counsellor News In our last newsletter, I mentioned a few resources we have purchased to support students and parents/ caregivers with issues faced in everyday life. Once again, I ask for guidance in what you would like to know more about. The information sheets I share from Parenting Ideas Insight (a subscription we have) are available in full beside the Finance Office window. They cover a range of relevant topics with lots of tips that you may find useful. Please help yourself. Parents/caregivers are welcome to access the site : www.parentingideasschools.com.au Username: longstreetps Password : 5608. We, as parents/caregivers, all face challenges at times. None of us has all the answers. Have a browse at this site. If you would like help to access this resource, please feel free to come and see me and you can access the site at school. Let’s start with one very relevant topic : attendance and punctuality. Both Lisette Fisher and I devote a LOT of time addressing this issue. Did you know that your child’s best learning time is the start of the day? That’s when every minute counts. School starts at 8.30am. Children need time to play, socialise and prepare for the transition from home to school. They need time to unpack their bag, order lunch, change readers and say hi to their teacher and friends. This all helps children to feel they belong. If you are having problems getting your child(ren) to school on time, ask how we can help. Included with this newsletter is an article written by Michael Grose – “It’s not okay to be away ... nor be late for school.” Michael provides some very relevant information and data supporting this issue. Have a read and let me know what you think. Let’s work hard to improve attendance and punctuality at LSPS. Let me know your thoughts : come and have a chat, give me a call or email me at Sue.Kiely626@schools.sa.edu.au Cheers, Sue Kiely, School Counsellor. When does it occur this year? Name: _____________________________ Room:________ Answer:______________ ____________________________________ Next week, end of semester 1 reports will be sent home with students. They will be given out on Wednesday the 6th of July (week 10). These reports will give you more detailed information about how your child/children are progressing in English, Maths and other subject areas, along with information relating to benchmarks. Please be aware that our benchmarks have changed this year to align with the Whyalla partnership, so they will be different to previous years. Students who have a Negotiated Education Plan (NEP), will have a separate letter included in their report to explain this reporting process. If you have any questions, please make an appointment to speak to your child’s teacher. Alternatively, parent/teacher interviews will be held early next term. News from the Principal I am excited to announce that this years Fun Run raised a total amount of $4857.75 dollars. This is an outstanding amount of money and everyone is to be highly congratulated for their efforts. We have finalised the Fun Run prizes which will arrive early in term 3. I would like to congratulate Adyn Bryant from Room 6 who raised a staggering $400.00 whilst Sophie Darby from Room 1 raised $249.00. They were our 2 highest fundraisers for this years event, however, everyone who participated and raised money should feel extremely proud of themselves. I would like to acknowledge the very hard work being undertaken by teaching staff during report writing. Reports provide families with the opportunity to gain a higher level of understanding of their child's academic and social achievements during Semester 1. Early in Term 3 you will also have the opportunity to discuss their report card and other achievement data during parent/ teacher interviews. Mrs Frisby has purchased software that enables you to book an interview on line with your child’s teacher. This information will be sent home in the very near future. If you do not have access to a computer or the Week 6 Award Winners What’s Happening in Room 8? internet a hard copy will be provided to you so you do not miss this vital opportunity. Governing Council recently updated a number of school policies which were due for review. These have been accepted by school council and will appear on the schools website in the very near future. Congratulations to our school football team who tried their best during this years after school carnival. Special thanks to Mr Miller for coaching our students who gave their all and to families for supporting this event. We went to Errappa Blue Light camp located in Iron Knob (just outside of Whyalla). While on camp the students of Room 8 and 9 were challenged both physically and mentally as they completed tasks such as orienteering, team games, climbing the high ropes course, attempting the leap of faith as well as using their team work skills to play a game of laser tag. Room 13 Maddison Lane Blair Prince Tenille Buss is the Way’ so far this year. Despite having a fear of heights students not only attempted, but also succeeded in climbing and completing the high ropes challenges. Through this participation in the camps challenging activities they were able to make progress in their own learning simply in terms of the things that they can achieve. Parent Information School Fees 2016 school fees are now well overdue. Please see Raylene in the Finance Office as soon as possible. She is more than happy to make arrangements to accommodate your situation. We have been advised that many families are waiting to receive their School Kids Bonus and/or tax return and will be using this to finalise their fees. If this applies to you, please let Raylene know to prevent final notices being issued. Police News We have had a visit from SAPOL advising of a spike in break-ins around the Whyalla Stuart area. They have asked that community members be vigilant and observe precautions to reduce the likelihood of a break-in occurring. Remember to keep doors and windows locked, even when outside, don’t leave valuables in obvious places, keep gates and garages locked. Please refer to the insert for more information. Canteen News We are pleased to announce that Macaroni Cheese Monday and Chicken Burger Tuesday will continue into Term 3. Keep your eye on our school Facebook Page and canteen white board for new and exciting menu additions coming soon.
