Helena Connection – July 2016
Welcome to the July edition of The Helena Connection,
especially the Class of 2012, who are celebrating their twenty
first birthdays this year.
Alumni is the Latin word for ‘graduates’ and it’s my job to keep
Helena College graduates connected to the school. We like to
stay in touch with all our graduates because we’re interested
in what they’re doing in the world: we love to hear their stories
and share them with our current students. Our community
remains vibrant when past students have a place in the school
community.… so please, share your experiences with me…you
can find me at the Glen Forrest Campus.
If you have changed your contact details or have special
announcements to share, email the alumni office.

Reflections - College year book
Breanna Holmes
I've graduated from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Arts
(Mass Communication) and am now traveling for a few months.
I've just done 6 weeks in Southeast Asia traveling through
Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. I'm currently in
Canada for a few weeks and heading to the USA and then onto
the east coast of Australia.

University
2013 - 2015 - Bachalor of Marine Science (Murdoch)
2016 - Honours in Marine Science (Murdoch)
My primary focus in marine science is conservation. I am
particularly eager to assess anthropogenic impacts on marine
mammals. I am interested in how behavioural changes due to
human induced pressures can influence survival, reproduction
and population dynamics of a cetacean species. My aim is to
contribute to knowledge of behavioural ecology, reproductive
biology and bioenergetics of baleen whales to aid marine
management. In my previous and current research I have
focused on bioenergetics of humpback whales and behavioral
ecology of minke whales retrospectively. Further I am focused
on how non-lethal research methods can be implemented and
applied to management frameworks to assist in conservation.
The aim of my current project is to identify what spatial and
temporal environmental variables (e.g. depth, SST, tide, ocean
current) affect the feeding probability in minke whales in Faxaflói
Bay, Iceland. Faxaflói Bay constitutes an important feeding
ground for minke whales in the North Atlantic, with feeding
taking place close to land, Garður offers a unique location
to study the natural feeding behavior of this species without
influencing its behaviour
Hannah Mast
Since finishing school I have been studying a Bachelor of
Science in Mathematics and Chemistry and working at Curtin
University as an IT Support Officer and as a tutor. During my
studies I have travelled for 6 weeks through Japan, as well as
having gone on study exchange to Fiji (and getting stuck there
during Cyclone Winston this February!) as part of the Australian
Government’s New Colombo Plan. In July I am travelling again
for study exchange to Germany, as well as backpacking
through other parts of Europe before and after. After this
completing my studies this year I look forward to studying a
Diploma of Education and working in mathematics education. I
am especially passionate about encouraging women and girls
to undertake education and careers in science, technology,
engineering and mathematics and I hope to travel again soon
to teach in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas both in
Australia and abroad.
Megan Sampson
I have completed my Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin
University majoring in Management and Human Resource
Management and being offered an Honours position, which I
have deferred until next year. I also studied in Dijon France at
Burgundy Business School in 2015, which was amazing.

Travel
2013-2015- I have been traveling to Southeast Asia every
chance I get (I have been to many remote islands in northern
Indonesia and the Philippines). I also lived in a van and road
tried the north and south islands of New Zealand.
Projects
I have been working on many art projects as well as being a
member of several bands. I am a dolphin watch and save our
marine life volunteer.
4
I am currently completing a Certificate III and IV in Fitness
Part Time after work as a bit of a hobby and I am currently
training for a marathon in August and the 100km Oxfam walk in
September.
I have worked in the Human Resource department at Roy Hill
for the last 8 months, which has been a great opportunity for
me and my career development.
I have also been to Japan, Indonesia, Europe twice and New
York (last week), I definitely have the travel bug.

What’s happening at Helena
From the Principal - Ian Lyons
The Helena community was particularly proud of the
achievements of the Class of 2015. The results from this cohort
of students compare favourably with any group of leavers in the
last 10 years.
Around 80% of our Year 12 students sat the WACE exams this
year and the results achieved provided them with ready access
to courses of their choice at tertiary institutions. The following
specifics are worth noting:
• 27% of WACE candidates from Helena College
achieved an ATAR of more than 90, ranking the
College 29th in the state based on percentage of
course scores 75 and above
• 56% of our candidates achieved an ATAR of more
than 80
7
• The Median ATAR of 81.5 ranked the College 34th in
the state
• The Mean ATAR of 80.6 indicated the great depth of
performance in this group of students
good also. But by far my favourite was the library. The library is
MASSIVE! The first time I got out 5-6 books because the best
part was that the book limit is as much as you can carry. The
second time I got out two books. - James 6M
• Five final year students were acknowledged with
Certificates of Commendation for achieving 10 or
more A grades across Years 11 and 12
I had a really good day today and made some new friends.
Thank you for organising the year six classrooms for us. I really
enjoyed meeting new people and my teacher. - Aurora 6L
• Students with non ATAR programmes achieved entry
in to apprenticeships, TAFE courses and employment
opportunities of their choice.
A few parent comments on the first week:
The results of the Class of 2015 reflect their diligent approach
to their studies as well as the dedication and professionalism
of our teaching staff. We were very pleased to note the
performance of our Biology and Media and Production Analysis
students with both classes being ranked in the top ten results
in the state.
Also worth mentioning is that last October one of our media
students, Sarah Makse, was named as a finalist in the
prestigious Bond University Film & Television Awards (BUFTA)
for her mockumentary, My Story, Rule of Thumb.

Principal
Year 6
This February we welcomed 96 Year 6 students onto the Glen
Forrest Campus with brand new purpose built facilities for our
youngest members.
Many staff have commented on the positive energy surrounding
the new Year 6 and 7 students, we are thrilled with the smooth
transition of all new students at the Glen Forrest Campus.
Year 6 comments on their first week:
I would also just like to say thank you for all the effort by the
school in making sure that Week 1 of high school has been
easy and informative for the students.
When I picked up my son after his first day of high school,
he was grinning from ear to ear. I think it was mostly because
he was carrying a brand new laptop (this was a great idea for
day 1, by the way), but he also said he met new kids, played
a gamelan, had a really nice lunch from the canteen, and just
really enjoyed the day. I think everyone did a fantastic job of
making the kids feel welcome and comfortable. Overall, very
happy with our choice of school so far.
We are very impressed with the additions of the Year 6 area and
credit should go to all those involved in the construction. The
communication with parents has been second to none.
Loving how organised everything seems...a feat in itself. The
staff all seem more than happy to do what they can to make
things as easy as possible for us and I love how approachable
everyone is.
It was great to see the Year 6 buildings today - I loved the
design and the fact that the four buildings make a separate
space - the undercover area in the middle is a very clever
design - it looks and feels safe and secure and makes the most
of the beautiful surrounding bush land. My son has spoken a lot
about today - and is very excited for tomorrow. He met some
new boys and enjoyed the day. Thank you all for a positive start.
All your hard work and planning has come together and we
appreciated the first day being exciting, safe and very well
organised. Our daughter is already enjoying the new class
members and can hardly wait to try cooking (she tells us). Once
again, a wonderful effort from all involved to bring this day
together.
Darlington Campus
My favourite part of last week was probably the time that I spent
working out how to start our computers. And also starting
French at school. It was really fun - Luc 6M
I think the best part of the first week was peer support. The peer
support leaders were really friendly…the only problem I could
think of, was it didn’t go for long enough. - Stella 6M
The best part of week one was Friday swimming trials. The first
day nerves had settled down and it was time for a swim. It was
a very social day finding out who is in my House and having
friendly competition. - Mia 6M
I made a whole lot of AMAZING, LOVING friends. - Indya 6M
Week one was terrific. We got our computer and went
swimming. We had a crazy Indonesian lesson too, art was

When you visit the Darlington Campus (formerly the Junior
School), one of the most impressive features is the beautiful
natural environment. Whilst many schools have to create their
Nature Play environment, we are surrounded by it. Particularly
special are the Waabiny Hill playgrounds where students and
community volunteers planted out an eroded hillside with local
plant species, bringing back native bird and animal life. Clearing
the hillside was a lot easier this time than when the DC site
was cleared many years ago, as Helena College founder Sally
Herzfeld remembers only too well.

IB Personal Project Exhibition. The exhibition showcases an
independent work of personal interest to each student as they
near the end of the Middle Years Programme in Year 10. They
work on their project mostly by themselves and outside school
hours, with a teacher assigned to supervise their progress.
One thing that never fails to impress anyone who sees the
exhibition is the variety of projects on display. Come and see for
yourself next year – the date is yet to be set but you can find
out next February by calling the office on 9298 9100.

Annual Giving 2016
One tangible way you can give back to Helena College is
through the Annual Giving programme. The programme is
always launched at this time of the year, although donations
and gifts can be made at any time. Annual Giving donations
support the Library Fund, Building Fund and Special Education
Fund, providing much needed resources and facilities for our
current and future students.
Anzac assembly
The College community came together on Friday, 29 April for
our ANZAC Assembly. Quite a number of students proudly
wore medals of family members who had served their country.
The whole school assembly featured contributions from the
Humanities, English and Music departments, the Darlington
Campus, Student Council and Old Helenians. It was a fitting
acknowledgement of all those Australian men and women who
have died or suffered for their country.
They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.
Run in partnership with Playgroup WA, it’s a great way to give
your little ones (0-4 years) a taste of Helena. From there you
might want to put their name down for Kindy and remember,
there are no registration fees for Old Helenians for any year level
at the College. Simply being part of our Helena community will
save you $110.00.
For OHs with older children, there are places available in most
year levels for 2017 including Kindy, Pre-primary, Year 1 and
Year 5.

Angela Bitney - Class of 2009
At Helena College, our current students and our valued alumni
(Old Helenians) remind us that developing a passion for learning
is one of the most important elements of the schooling we
provide.
also a bit apprehensive, feeling the weight of expectation to
do well. But she says, once here she felt encouraged and
supported by all the staff as well as the students.
She was also full of praise for the students’ willingness to try
the new learning approaches that she wanted to bring to her
classes.
Recently we heard from Old Helenian, Angela Bitney who
graduated in 2009 and moved to Melbourne to study Musical
Theatre before getting a scholarship to New York's prestigious
American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Now Angela lives in
New York where she is a successful stage performer.
After graduating from Helena in 2010, Constance went to
Finland as a Rotary Exchange student. She spent a year with
a host family and even though she was very homesick, she
enjoyed the opportunity to extend herself through new cultures
and experiences. One of her most vivid memories is leaving
Perth on a 40 degree day, and arriving in Finland to minus 30
degrees.
‘Helena gave me many of the tools I needed to move
interstate and then overseas to follow my passion.’
Once she’s finished her Diploma in Teaching later this year,
Constance hopes to live and teach overseas.
Angela says her parents offered to send her to a performing arts
school but she wanted to stay at Helena and she's glad she
did,
‘That move may have given me a leg up as a performer
but Helena College will always give me a much higher leg
up as a person.’ Darlington Review , May 2016

Sally Boud - Class of 2007
Year 4's Peter Cumming has been recognised as an
exceptional teacher. Peter has been teaching at Helena College
since 2010 and now he's been nominated by the parents of his
students for 'A Day Made Better', a national programme that
recognises exceptional teachers.
Exceptional teachers do more than just teach – by going above

students to build knowledge, confidence and life-skills.

PLAYER JONATHAN DIAZ APPOINTED
CAPTAIN OF THE KALAMUNDA EASTERN
SUNS MEN’S SBL BASKETBALL TEAM
The Hills Raiders Basketball Association (HRBA) are pleased to
announce the appointment of HRBA player, Jonathan Diaz, as
Captain of the Kalamunda Eastern Suns Men’s SBL basketball
team.
Jonathan, or Jonno as he is better known, has been involved
with the HRBA since the age of 10, playing for the Sawyers
Valley Basketball Club. 12 years later, he continues to play
for Sawyers Valley each season, despite his WABL and SBL
playing commitments at the Kalamunda Eastern Suns during
that time.
President of the HRBA, Bob Little, is not surprised at all by
Jonno’s achievement. He fondly remembers Jonno as a
talented young boy whom he believed would have a successful
basketball career if he continued to play as an adult.
For the 2016 WABL season, Jonno has also been appointed
as the Head Coach of the Kalamunda Eastern Suns Under 16,
Division 2, boys basketball team. He is assisted by his father,
Marc Diaz. The Diaz duo are currently in pre-season training
and have put together a strong team. They are both looking
forward to the coming WABL season.
Head Coach of the Kalamunda Eastern Suns Men’s SBL
basketball team, Michael Clarke, speaks very highly of Jonno.
“He is a first-class point guard, who plays great defence. He is
hard-working and a fine young man. I am very proud to have
him as the captain of our programme”.
Kathy Gibb - Class of 2003
Congratulations once again to Jonno, we wish you and your
team a successful SBL season.

Janelle won a soccer scholarship to the Culver-Stockton

initial adjustment was hard – ‘So much fried food’ – especially
as she was the youngest on campus and couldn’t even open a
bank account in her own name until she turned eighteen.
But the upside has been the beauty of the campus, the sense
of independence and the new friendships, including the

Reunions
Class of 2005 – Ten Year
On Sunday, 13 December a group of ex - Helenians met at the
Principal Tavern in Midland.
Walking in, it took me about an hour to reach where the main
group of about 30 had gathered. Every time anyone bumped
into each they were met with ‘ Hi – what are you doing now?’
Many had kept up with one another, such is the nature of
Helena students and the Helena College community. It was
also amazing to see the reaction of people who hadn’t seen
each other since the graduation in 2005. Plenty of hugs and
of course ‘ Hi – what are you doing now?’ There were mums,
dads and babies, business owners, PhDs, success stories,
travel stories, and stories about the days as students at school
– some stories the teachers didn’t know about!
We relived camps (Margaret River best, Nanga next), the ball,
titrations, graduation, leavers week and the teachers who
influenced and guided them to where they are now.
I always enjoy finding out where students go and what they do
when they leave school.
It was friendly, fun and just a chance to meet, so much so, that
there is a reunion planned in 5 years.
Thanks to Gen Jones and Stanley Dunwell for organising this
reunion.

Giving back to Helena
It’s great when graduates drop in to the front office to catch up
on College news and tell their own stories about latest studies,
careers and personal lives.
We’ve also had many Old Helenians speak at our assemblies
and graduations.
While you may think that what you are doing is ‘just life’, for
our current students it’s inspiring to hear what is possible when
they finish school.
If you have the time to give back to the Helena community in
some way, there’s a lot you could do that would be valued by
our students and staff:
• Speak at an assembly or at Year 12 graduation
To take a school tour
Register via BOOK A TOUR ONLINE .
Community Relations
The Community Relations department manages the College
Facebook page , which is a great way to keep up with what’s
happening at the school now. They also produce College
newsletters and manage the new look website. Their goal is
to keep all members of the Helena community informed and
engaged. They are always happy to hear from Old Helenians
with ideas or news.

World Challenge Market Day
The World Challenge 2016 and 2017 students are having a
Market Day on Sunday, 14 August, from 10am until 4pm as
part of fundraising for their World Challenge expeditions.
This year there are two World Challenge expeditions, one to
Tanzania and the other to Cambodia / Vietnam.
The August Market Day will help individual fundraising efforts
and contribute to the community project that students
undertake in the country of the expedition.
Students will have a variety of stalls which include - books,
candles, jewellery, pre-loved fashions, kitchen shop, silent
auction, mystery jars, lucky dips, raffles, hot and cold drinks,
delicious cakes, and many more. There will also be food trucks
on site.
Old uniforms wanted
Stall holders: If anybody is interested in having a stall, please
email rpmasetti@helena.wa.edu.au or
ekelly@helena.wa.edu.au .
Donations: We will hold a raffle and silent action during the
markets and would appreciate donations of good, services or
gift vouchers. Funds raised will be divided evenly among the
two expedition projects. Donations can be left at reception at
the Glen Forrest campus.
Coming along: Please mark the date on your calendar and
come along for a fun day at the markets. The entry will be a
gold coin donation per car, which will go towards The World
Challenge projects.
Do you have any old uniforms hidden in the cupboard? The P&F
is having a second hand stall on Saturday, 8 October at the
Glen Forrest Campus. All donations appreciated.
