She was allegedly held responsible for allotting the area near Ashok Academy School for feeding them. On speaking to her, she admitted to the same, but also explained her reasons to do so. According to Jyotsana, pigeons were earlier beig fed outside Royal Accord building. But after many residents complained of falling sick, it was shifted near the drains. She said “I alotted the area near the drain after permission from the ward officer, so that it doesn't lead to any filth near a society. When I earlier tried to remove the birds from there, some activists raised their voices against me. This is why I changed the area where they were fed.” On being asked whether she has permitted a local store owner to sell grains at the spot she said, “Earlier a woman used to come from TEXT KRITIKA SHARMA PHOTOGRAPHS SHARAD VEGDA AND DEEKSHA www.mumbaimessenger.com Dear Readers, Mumbai Messenger is a local newspaper that has been initiated for the people of Andheri (west) with the aim to work for the betterment of the society. Our world, way of living and moral values all revolve around our culture which have given rise to certain hilarious ironies. One such is that six inches between a blouse and a saree is considered 'cultured' where as two inches between a jeans and a top is considered 'uncultured'. This difference in the name of culture is void and shows how we can manipulate things according to our convenience. In India, one's character is determined by the clothes they wear and not by their action. Andheri - A home to beggars TEXT KRITIKA SHARMA PHOTOGRAPHS DIKSHA AND SHARAD VEGDA Andheri is well known to everyone as one of the posh areas but since the last few years it is turning as the hot spot for beggars. Some of the main areas they occupy are Oshiwara signal, Lokhandwala Back Road and Lokhandwala market. Beggars have encroached on the footpaths, making many such stretches their temporary homes. A major hazard that locals fear is loss of life. The families living on the streets have their children straying away, sometimes even very close to vehicles. If unnoticed, they may even be run over by cars or lead to a major accident. In such cases, the driver alone is held responsible. Another major issue that needs to be dealt with is the menace of beggars who sleep at the corner of various roads. An Oshiwara citizen said, “I am afraid of driving at night because I need to keep a vigilant eye to make sure no ones sleeping at a blind spot.” Beggars are also a reason behind the increasing crimes in Andheri. Many of them make their daily earnings by pick pocketing, car robberies, etc. The area too, has hygiene issues, with spells a major health hazard, which is worrying locals. A local beggar says, “We don't have another place to live in. If the authorities uproot us from here, we move elsewhere.” However, citizens feel differently and hope the area is cleared off them soon. Tailor nabbed for blackmailing girl A tailor who threatened to upload obscene pictures and videos of a 23-year-old girl, who is from Gujarat and studies in Mumbai, unless her father paid up Rs 1.8 crore, has been nabbed by the police. Last August, the girl lost her purse on a train at Andheri. Within a month, she received an anonymous letter at her aunt's home in Oshiwara. It stated that its writer, the tailor, who is aged 52 years, had pictures and videos of her in "compromising positions". Modi Temple Was Built To Protect Encroachment The temple dedicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Rajkot was constructed illegally by a tea stall owner to ward off action for encroaching on government land. A day after it was built, the PM expressed strong disapproval in a series of tweets. Within hours, the Rajkot administration razed the structure to the ground. Domestic Help Held For Trying To Sodomise Boy The Gamdevi police have arrested a 23-year-old domestic help for allegedly attempting to sodomise the 12-year-old son of a Pedder Road businessman on Monday. The incident occurred when victim was sleeping in his room and the accused sneaked in. This innovative concept has gained tremendous popularity since its conception in December 2014. Airtel customers have been successfully availing services provided by this store, run by 10 females. This initiative is also aimed at empowering women and generating employment for them. The store is aimed at being a onestop shop for all services, be it internet connections, service requests and complaints, choosing an appropriate handset, and much more. Airtel encourages women to take complete ownshership of the store and play different roles from being security personnel to serving as the head, providing an unparallel experience to customers. Ashok Ganapathy, Hub CEO –Maharashtra, Goa & Gujrat, Bharti Airtel (India) said, "This is Airtels first women store in Mumbai, which aims to uniquely approach its large customer base in the continuously growing competitive market. Encouraging women power has always been integral to Airtels commitment to society, and thus the launch of the store comes as an important step. We want to give customers the best and apt service.” Additionally, providing comfort to females by walking into an all-women store was also one of the reasons to open such a store. The store is open from 10.30am – 7.30pm. Residents out for a casual walk usually fall prey to such crimes. A source from Versova police station informed that the most susceptible are morning walkers, especially senior citizens and women. Riding a bike, they arrive from nowhere and snatch gold chains and even before the victim recovers, they escape. Our correspondent witnessed a similar crime wherein a girl walking down Lokhandwala market was snatched off her purse. The offenders came in an auto rickshaw, snatched her purse and ran away, even before she could recover. These cases are on rise and the public needs to be alert and aware. Though chain snatching is considered to be a smaller offense, the number has risen tremendously since the past year. According to a source, gold chains, the value of which is high, can be sold in the market without their original bills. This is a major factor leading to its rise. Few safety measures to be followed by residents: • Be alert about who is around you when you are in public. • Take well-lit, busy routes. • Avoid walking or parking in deserted areas, especially early in the mornings and late in the evenings. • Avoid talking or messaging on mobile phones while walking on the road. • Avoid wearing flashy, heavy and loose fitted jewelry. • Be alert if you find a bike following you. They also conducted blood donation camp from morning 103pm. The event also saw chief guests like shree Dinesh. B. Vaskar, Shree Ankush Nivangune and Shree Manohar Deshmukh. The camp witnessed good participation and appreciation from people. PHOTOS/NIKET KOTECHA We came across this unique joint which claims to be a RTO office with all possible banners and hoarding screaming out to be a RTO office from the outside but from inside it's a Pan shop, Tea stall and everything but RTO office. This place is run by a man who you can see in the above picture who calls himself the care taker of the shop and in the evening and by a RTO officer in the morning. The place is clustered, with everything scattered around in a mess and filth all over the place. This shop is nothing but ruins and an unorganized menace making it difficult to understand what it was in reality. The Sanjeeva Enclave Lane in Seven Bungalows, Andheri West is actually a two way road which is not considered the same by people. There is a divider on the road which means, from one side vehicles can come and from the other side they can go but all the vehicles use both the sides and end up colliding many times. It is clear to the people that they have to use just one side of the road but even after knowing, it doesn't seem like they are following it at all. Not only are the residents tormented by this, but also the jewelry store owners and shop owners of the near vicinity. Despite several complaints and appeals from the localities, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) are paying no heap to it. No official body is ready to take up the responsibility and work for the betterment. Both BMC and MMRDA are busy playing the blame game, while BMC officials state that the road is under the responsibility of MMRDA, MMRDA claims that maintenance of roads and PHOTO/SHARAD VEGDA Veteran actor Om Puri, who was recently seen in movie 'Dirty Politics' was spotted in Oshiwara outside Vyanjan Restaurant eating it's very famous samosa. The first flyover that will be of 210 meters will connect Yari Road with Lokhandwala junction, near Amarnath building, and cost up to Rs 30 crore. The second one will connect D P Road, Inlaks Nagar to Lokhandwala Lake; measuring 350 meters and will cost Rs 50 crore. Finally, the third flyover will be of 500 meters from Fisheries Institute to Link Road and will be constructed at a cost Rs 75 crore. Environmental Activist Rishi Aggarwal said, “The proposed flyovers will pass through some of the most beautiful mangrove-rich areas in Mumbai. I suggest that instead of flyovers we should only have tunnels, PHOTOS/SHARAD VEGDA In a country where religion is every man's identity and sometimes a reason for controversies, a man Krishnadas or Krishna Avtar has a different take. He stands at Juhu signal the entire day with a board in hand that says: Follow your religion, Love Everyone. According to him, the only thing that can save this world from endless wars is just mutual understanding between every human. He says “People should follow one simple rule – Talk as much as you think the other person can tolerate and leave everything else. Instead of thinking that I am superior, one should think that I have to let everyone stay happy and satisfied. Everything will become perfect automatically this way.” His out of the box thoughts have made him a renowned face to most residents, including celebrities and millions of others that visit the area. keeping a tab on illegal hawking is the concern of the civic body. Residents of the area are confused about whom to take up the issue to, related to the path between Navrang movie theatre and Andheri railway station, which is narrow and immensely crowded. According to Mohammad Afzal, a social worker and transport activist, “BMC should take strict action against this but instead they are neglecting their duty. The common people have to suffer because of this.” Mr. Afzal has been fighting staunchly against the encroachment issue. “People face problems everyday by taking the Navrang route as they have to dodge the hawkers and vehicles to get through”, he added. Also when interviewed the commuters at the lane towards Navrang, the response was the same- troubled and tormented. PHOTO/NIKET KOTECHA which neither disrupt the view nor disturb the mangroves. They objected to the producer showing Sikhs in a bad light in the film Monsoon. They were shouting slogans like they will not allow the release of the film and will also make sure the Central Board of Film Certification does not pass the film. They allege that they will be writing to CBFC too. Monsoon is slated for February 27 release. It also stars Vijay Singh, who's touted to be Mallika Sherawat's ex. WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2015 MUMBAI, VOLUME 1, ISSUE 7 EDUBUZZ 06 ASHA KIRAN - A RAY OF HOPE Taking education to streets PHOTOS/SHARAD VEGDA Sex Education Through Education TEXT SHRUTIKA SHARMA OTHER ACTIVITIES • Provides food and medical relief to the poor and needy. • Provides skill development facilities for children through Computer facilities, arts and crafts classes. • Operates a Gaushala. Shrutika Sukhi India is one of the countries that have a high illiteracy rate since education is held back either due to poverty or orthodox cultural factors. Here itself, we have The Asha Kiran Charitable Trust, an NGO which strives to help the underprivileged. This NGO, going against all odds, believes in taking education to the streets. They started a street side school in 1998, outside a shop in Andheri West, with only two children in attendance. They have been working since 17 long years. With time, they now have 8 centers in Andheri- Nana Nani Park, JuhuVersova link road, Juhu Circle Centre, Mhada, near Star Bazaar, opposite The Club and Lokhandwala. One of the Trustees, Mahesh Hingorani said, “There used to be beggars staying in huts, on the side of the road, so we thought of educating them. We started by teaching them on the footpath, encouraging them to study.” They conduct classes for students who attend municipality schools. The NGO has 25 volunteer teachers and 25 paid teachers. The classes are before or after school hours. Students, who go to school in the morning, attend classes in the afternoon, while others who go to school in the afternoon, attend classes in the morning. Students are given a banana to eat every day. Few people and Temples also provide food to these kids. These classes are held on the footpath, near their houses. During Monsoon, the classes are held in buses, which don't have seats. The class had first begun with teaching and feeding the beggars. Then slowly, the number increased and now they have around 400 students. Rekha Sharma (75) a retired teacher has been a volunteer since 15 years and teaches the teachers, who in turn educate the children. The teachers are also learning, as some attend college. Having been a teacher for 40 years, Rekha Sharma said, “I came across this NGO when I was passing by and noticed children studying on the footpath. It was then that I decided to volunteer for the betterment of society.” The teachers of Juhu-Versova Link Road are students in colleges. They have been teaching the children since two-three years. All subjects are taught to these children. So residents, let us join hands to support the Trust in every way possible to carry on their good work since the NGO is lacking funds. In today's times, to stumble upon atleast one news pertaining to rape or molestation on a daily basis is very common. With such a grave issue staring at society in its face, it is extremely important to educate teenagers and children about sex to make them more aware and alert. While the Internet has proved to be a boon in more ways than one, it also is a bane by providing easy access to the world of pornography. Children too, have easy access to this virtual world, through mobiles, laptops, etc, which at times, can prove very harmful. Exposure to such information has the teenagers striving for information on sex, answers to which they do not get. Hence sex education. VIEW OF SCHOOLS: Our correspondents visited a few local schools to see how they deal with the issue and answer curious minds: • Hansraj Morarji Public School: This school has an 'Ayaksha Well Clinic' which organises seminars on sex education for students in the 9th grade. They bring a special team of doctors who talk in length with children on the topic. The doctors not only talk about sex, but also systematically discuss various physiological changes in the body. Being an all-boys class, they even teach acceptability of the natural biological differences in the opposite sex. From the 5th to 8th grade, they have a session that teaches all about 'good and bad touch.' • Smt. Rajrani Malhotra Vidyalaya: This schoool has different types of seminars for different standards. From the 1st to 5th grade, they teach children how to distinguish between 'good and bad touch.' In case of foul play, children are taught to effectively confide in and communicate with their parents/elders. The school brings a panel of gynecologists who talk to students of 6th to 8th grade on the topic of puberty. Grades 9 and 10 have an introduction to physiology, which is taught to them by experts as well as teachers. The doctors talk about the do's and donts, hormonal changes, physiological and psychological changes, which lead to attraction of the opposite sex. They also discuss the pros and cons of sex, pregnancy and contraception methods. Information on AIDS and STD is also given. • City International School: This school has 40 workshops within a span of three months from preprimary to the 10th Std. A doctor is invited to talk on puberty and sex. For the younger children, they are taught the concepts 'no' and 'go and tell'- this involves teaching them not to interact with strangers and also to talk to a trustworthy adult about it. From the 4th grade they are taught about their private parts and that they are not supposed to be touched by anyone else but their mother. The expert explains 'good and bad touch.' The students are even taught the imporatnce of hygiene. Grades 9 and 10 are spoken to about puberty, sex education and relationships. All the schools which conduct such seminars have different sessions for boys and girls. This helps the students respond freely and they don't feel embarrassed or shy. Chits are passed around so that the students can anonymously ask questions and have their queries solved. PARENTS' REACTION: All parents appreciate that the schools have taken an initiative to inform students on such sensitive issues. Most parents are unable to talk freely with their chidren due to lack of time, are scared to do so, or simply don't want to. However, they are glad that schools now take the onus of systematically educating them with the help of experts. STUDENTS' REACTION: Whenever there is a seminar on sex education, it has been noticed that students are very enthusiastic. This is where their deepest queries and doubts on the issue are answered to without any shame. The session gives them a more realistic and insightful explanation, based on scientific knowledge. The generation gap between parents and children is one that cannot be gotten rid off. And so is the distance, no matter how hard we may try to bridge the gap. With exposure, the younger generation chooses to keep to themselves, without talking or involving the parents. This behaviour is extremely harmful, and thus sessions like these make them more aware about the rights and wrongs. Most times, children and teenagers are more comfortable talking to counsellors/ doctors than their parents, which finally is a vent to their problems. 07 WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2015 MUMBAI, VOLUME 1, ISSUE 7 Rashtriya Vigyan Chalchitramela & Comptetition 2015 Helping organization fools a disabled man PHOTOS/SHARAD VEGDA BMC recently picked up a stall which was located near the Shri Adhikari Brothers office and was provided to a disabled man by Sai Mishan Trust (as printed on the stall banner). This stall was illegal and had not obtained any license from the BMC. All tobacco products were being sold in that stall and the man there called Rizwan Ahmed was totally disabled. While talking to him, he told us “I used to live in Borivali earlier but then this place was allotted to me by this trust.” The slogan of that trust states that 'Serving disabled people is like serving God'. When we asked Rizwan that who has given him the permission to establish a stall he simply gave us a business card of the trust on which Raju Bhai was written. He showed us some papers also on which only an application for asking disabled self employment opportunity was written. He had no license for the stall and no clearance from BMC also and still he was sitting there at the corner of the road, selling all the tobacco stuff. Silver Beaver Award for City International School Rotary Club of Mumbai North members along with Krishna Foundation Trust and Ramadiya Organisation inaugurated a public toilet in Andheri West. The inauguration was done by the local Corporator Amit Saram. Vigyan Prasar, jointly with the National Council of Science Museums and N.D. T.V. had announced the 5th National Science Film Festival and Competition 2015 in which two students of our school participated It all began from their Science teachers, telling them about this competition and they readily agreed. The topic given to them was “How do I see science?” Countless ideas clicked in their minds and after a long and tedious week of working on the film they were successful in making their very own film titled “How do I see Science?” We were being tagged as the directors, the editors and the camera persons of the film. The entries were sent and after a month they got to know that they their film have been nominated. Out of 152 entries 64 were selected and a great achievement for them, but they wanted to take it a step further. Determined to win, they head off to Lucknow on 3rd February 2015. The participants namely Shreyaa Mohan and Varsha Shankar were awarded with certificates and prize money worth Rs. 30,000/-. They were one among the youngest students in this film festival. Their film was declared the second best film. The event was held at the Regional Science Centre, Lucknow. The i n a u g u ra t i o n c e r e m o n y w a s embraced by eminent people. The grand opening was followed by showcase of the selected films, interaction with scientist and science film makers and workshops on film making. Their film was screened with various other movies. The idea behind the film was that students wanted the audience to realize the driving force of our everyday activities is Science, as, it's the simple fact that people don't realize. E.g. How a Tsunami Occurs? Why does a leopard have spots? Why do stars glow? There is Science behind all of these phenomena. Folk Dances of every country or region have certain things in common, they are danced to express joy, and they celebrate seasons and are inspired by day to day village/House activities that people conduct. Our parents have always done things more efficiently minus all the modern gadgets that we are gifted with. Even in present day, women in villages use a grinding stone to make curry paste or chutneys, they still pull water out of well with a bucket and rope, they still pound chilly to make a powder, farmers still sow rice with hands, use a hand pump for water and sometimes throw seeds in air to sow; all these activities have ensured that our parents are healthier, fitter and they certainly live longer. “It is an attempt to revive our Folk Culture and Re-connect us with our roots,” says Twinkle Talwar, the Creator of this Unique Fitness Form, This is our First project in “Make In India” concept and we have weaved the Folk Dance & Day to Day Village activities into one to create Folka Fitness, The idea came to her when she was on a holiday trip to her friend's village to attend Garba in traditional manner, She realized that while there were no fitness studios there, the best way to stay in shape amidst all festive savories was to do what others did…. the traditional methods like grinding flour by hand chakki, mincing the spices on grinding stones and draw buckets of water from the well and then at the end of the day deck up in all fervor and colors to convene & relieve the day stress by looks like you have Androgenetic alopecia which is male pattern balding. Reader’s queries answered by Dr. Indu Khosla My child has developed skin rash, is it allergy or chicken pox? It is red in colour and looks like blisters. – Sonaam Arora/ Shastri Nagar Rashes in children occur due to multiple reasons and need to be differentiated based on their appearance and the part of the body they are present in. Typically during December to March Chicken pox is prevalent. Rashes due to chicken pox appear in crops and start from the stomach and chest and spread to the limbs. The rash is generally accompanied with fever and appears like a water filled boil which rapidly heals with a formation of a black scab. Allergic rashes can occur anywhere on the body and are usually associated with itching. My daughter has a habit of digging out my wall and eating it. She also eats chalk pieces. Why is it and how to get rid of this habit? – Aditi/ Oshiwara This is called pica and is seen in children with anemia due to deficiency of Iron. In such patients treatment consists of Iron rich diet and oral Iron medicines. In some children it is a force of habit and behavior modification may be required. My son has white worms in his stomach and he doesn't eat food. What can I do? – Sridevi/ 4 Bunglows Worm infestation is common in childhood and is a common cause of poor appetite. Treatment for worms can solve the problem but it is essential to maintain good hygiene in the form of hand washing before eating and after visiting the toilet, eating hygienic and well cooked food, keeping the nails short etc. It is a myth that eating chocolates or sweets causes worms. My daughter has white small patches all over her face. It started from her neck thus spreading up to her face. What is the matter with her? – Amreen/ Lokhandwala White patches on face can also be due to many reasons. The common causes are dry skin, fungal infections and photosensitivity to sunlight. Please visit your doctor to understand the cause of the white patches so that correct treatment can be given. My son is 4yrs and has problem in sleeping. He barely sleeps for two hours a day. This condition keeps us worried. – Komal Shah/ Veera Desai. Healthy sleep in children is a habit which needs to be inculcated. Most children sleep late and hence get up late in the morning preventing them from getting adequate sleep in the day. The old proverb 'Early to bed and early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise' is right in many ways. A four year old can however do without daytime sleep if he sleeps for 9- 10 hrs in the night especially if he goes to bed early ie. By 9 pm or 10 pm. SEND YOUR QUERIES TO DR. INDU KHOSLA : mumbaimessengerweekly@gmail.com Eat Healthy, Stay Fit To achieve a healthy, balanced diet, it is important to eat at least three meals a day and not to skip breakfast. Each meal should be composed of a variety of foods from each food group and portion sizes should be moderated to control calorie intake COMPONENTS OF A HEALTHY BALANCED DIET 1. Dairy : This includes cheese, milk and yogurt. Dairy foods are usually high in saturated fat so to reduce fat and calories it is best to choose low fat or fat free varieties. Dairy is essential in the diet to provide calcium for strong bones as well as protein and vitamin D. For those who do not consume dairy products it is essential to use a replacement such as soy or nut based milks or supplement calcium in the diet. 2. Protein : This is the main protein containing food group and includes lean meat and poultry with visible fat and skin removed, as well as fish, beans, lentils, peas, nuts and seeds, eggs and soy proteins such as tofu and tempeh. Meat and poultry are high in iron, whilst legumes are a rich source of fibre and eggs provide a multitude of vitamins and minerals. Fish should be included regularly, particularly oily fish high in omega three fatty acids such as salmon and sardines. Cooking methods should be low fat such as grilling, poaching, dry frying or steaming to minimize extra fat added during the cooking process. It is also important to avoid processed meats such as sausages and sandwich meats where possible as these are high in fat and sodium. 3. Fruit : Fruit is virtually fat free, low in calories, high in fibre and very nutritious. Aim to include a variety of fruits to get a wide range of vitamins and minerals. This could also include dried fruits 100% and fruit juices, however, it is important to choose unsweetened varieties. Both dried fruit and juices are concentrated sources of calories, so make sure portion sizes are controlled. 4. Vegetables : These generally contain the least calories and the most vitamins and minerals, hence they are an excellent option for filling up on. Make sure to include a wide variety in your meals as different vegetables are rich in different vitamins. Try to use low fat cooking methods such as steaming or grilling. 100% vegetables juices can also be included, and are a great way to get a few serves of vegetables into your diet. If you struggle to include enough vegetables in your day to day meals, try adding grated of finely chopped vegetables to mixed dishes such as pasta sauces, burger mince or lasagnas, chances are you won't even notice the difference. Rip Sir Roy is an upcoming Indian Romantic thriller movie; the film will feature Arjun Rampal, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ranbir Kapoor in lead role. The film released on 13th February, 2015 across. The duo answered the questions posed by media persons present at the event and also clicked pictures with the fans. Ranbir Kapoor (Roy) plays a character of a mysterious thief whom nobody seems to be able to get their hands on. Arjun Rampal plays a role of a film maker who seems to be the only one making profit from all of Roy's robberies. The plot revolves around the three character's lives in one dramatic, romantic and suspenseful thriller. Champak Banerjee The hierarchy of stars in Bollywood has its own ranking system. However, if one keenly observes, one will notice that a characer artist who is truly talented and more deserving than the others, may still get paid meagre and be ranked lower than someone not sodeserving. Although the Bollywood stars respect them and at times have spoken in favour of them, the status of character artists still remains very low. The industry that pays crores to its main actors, gives very little to its character artistes, also an itegral part of the industry. This status can be changed only if actors join hands for the cause and make sure that a good amount is paid to character artists. It is surprising that the film industry does not give any retirement benefits to its artists. The Government, which levies a heavy tax on actors' earnings, has not done anything for them either. Instead of paying tax to the government, actors who earn money from the industry should instead deposit the amount to a trust which can look after old character artists, needy stars, and other workers. An effort must be made to form an individual Trust or NGO for the film industry to aid the condition of coartistes and workers. LIFESTYLE 14 WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2015 MUMBAI, VOLUME 1, ISSUE 7 Season Bliss with Sickness Kick INNER PEACE We all have heard about Law of Attraction , the secret, magic and so on , still what is this all about . What is Law of attraction and how does it work? How does it effects our day to day life ? Just as our Law of Gravity affects everything that exist upon our planet, The Law of Attraction affects everything that exist in all the Universe. In fact , this Law of Attraction is actually the basis of everything that exists. The Law of Attraction in simple terms says:, That which is like unto itself, is drawn." In more complicated terms it means that everything in the Universe is emitting a vibration signaland those signals that are the same comes together, magnetically. The entire Universe is Vibrationally based. Everything is vibrating. And it is through these vibrations that things either comes together or stay apart. Law of Attraction evidenced in our society when we see that the one who speaks most about illness has illness, when you see that one who speaks most about prosperity has prosperity. The evidence of it that surrounds you will be easily apparent, for you will begin to recognise that exact correlation between what have been thinking about and what actually coming in your experience. Nothing merely shows up in your experience. Because the Law of Attraction is responding to the thoughts that you hold at all times, it is accurate to say that you are creating your reality. Everything that you experience is attracted to you because the Law of Attraction is responding to the thoughts that you are offering. Whether you are remembering something from the past, observing something in your present, or imaging something about future, the thought of focused upon in your powerful now the way to bliss! has activated a vibration within youand the Law of Attraction is responding to it now. So, now how you could attract the things you really want in Life. Step1- know what you don't want.... It's hard to figure out what you don't want. How do you know that you are thinking about what you don't want, you can tell by the way you feel. When you are speaking and thinking about something you don't want- you feel negative emotions. You will feel anger, disappointment, embarrassment, guilt or fear. You always feel bad when you think something about you don't want. Step2- knowing what you do want. Whenever you know what you don't want, isn't rather easy to figure out what you do want. Eg( when you're sick, what is that you do want. Good health/ feel better, when you don't have enough money to buy something that you want, what is it that you do want ? More money). Step 3- the most important step that most people miss altogether. Step 3 is once you identified what is that you do want than talk about why you want it, describe what it would be like to have it, explain it, pretend it, or remember another time like it . But keep thinking till you find the feeling place, continue to talk to yourself about what it is that you do want until you feel good. It's because, until you change the way you feel , you're getting into your well-being. Being in well-being is the natural state. It's truly who we are. Step 4- That is when you get what you want. The physical manifestation of your desire. Enjoy the Law of Attraction by attracting the things you want in your life in the most empowering way . Anjali Nagpal is a life coach and workshop facilitator certified to present Heal Your Life transformational workshop worldwide (based on the philosophy of Louise L Hay) approved by Hay House, US. One can find people belonging to different origins, languages and regions, Mumbai in true essence stands for unity in diversity. With so many varying elements, how can we miss out the climate here? Mumbaikars are blessed with a number of seasons from monsoon to summers, from autumn to light winters- one can all find it here. Right now also the climate here plays with the people tricking them into summers and winters. At one point you will find it sunny and soon enough it chilly already. You walk out dressed in your best jackets and coats keeping the chilly mornings in the mind, but soon you will find the scorching heat welcoming you and when you are all set to take off your jacket, the sun will wave you good bye bringing back the chills. It's funny how the climate changes here with time. One day it's sunny, next day it's cloudy. The climate in Mumbai is unpredictable and changes like the music in your playlists. Fashion Alert Weekend Getaways this Season Agonising over what to wear and making sure you look your absolute best has become part of every woman's daily routine. All the same, in our endeavour to strive to keep up with the current fashion trends while still opting for a silhouette that is most flattering, there might be times where we stray into 'unacceptable' territory. AT YOUR BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING While dressing for your best friend's wedding, one of the biggest sins you can commit is to outdo the bride with your bling quotient. Traditionally, wedding-appropriate Indian attire tends to be fairly heavy with the sequins and bling. In such a scenario, it is advisable to keep your jewellery to a bare minimum. OVER-ACCESSORISING There is a very fine line between choosing the appropriate necklace to complement your plain white shirt and going overboard with multiple items of jewellery in one look. If you are wearing a big statement piece then the rest of your look has to be left unaccessorised. On the contrary, you can mix multiple delicate pieces like rings, bracelets and chains together if that's your style. Loading everything on at once, no matter how pretty will spell suicide for your look. MIND YOUR LINGERIE As a general rule of thumb, irrespective of what you are wearing, it is absolutely imperative that you do not display your lingerie. Visible undergarments in the form of showcased bra straps, inappropriately coloured undergarments that shine through your attire, scooped necklines that leave nothing to one's imagination or even a visible panty line, are all fatal mistakes for everyday dressing. TOO LOOSE, TOO TIGHT? The final sartorial sin that each of us should solemnly swear to consciously avoid making is associated with ill-fitting clothes. There are some of us who make the error of wearing clothes that are far too tight while some of us sit at the other end of the spectrum with clothes that are baggy and far too loose. Irrespective of this, ill-fitting clothes are extremely unflattering and make you look un-kept. Mumbai is known as the 'city that never sleeps'. Shahi Gulrajani is a nature lover and she is ready to do everything possible to preserve them. An interior decorator by profession, this simple woman plants trees wherever possible. She has planted different types of trees in her society like Guava, Mango, and Asoka etc. In fact she says that she personally gets affected when someone hurts them. For her, trees are like her children. She hopes to increase the number of trees in her area as much as possible. If a lone woman can conserve our trees, is there any reason why our local authorities are rendered helpless to do the same? TREES Natures gift, our victim The trees around us are extremely important and have always been instrumental in improving human life both during its life and post-harvest. There is no doubt that without trees, humans would not exist on this beautiful planet. They are the ground troops, making up an environmental frontline. Our existing forests and the trees we plant, work in tandem to make this a better world. At the very beginning of our human existence, trees were considered sacred and honorable but the modern human community has other, more practical reasons to admire and honor trees. Nowadays, the scenario has changed because people have started to ignore the underlying truth to their existence. They are the only medium of survival for us and as soon as trees start to diminish, so will us. DEGRADING CONDITIONS OF TREES IN MUMBAI I n r e c e n t y e a r s , s e v e ra l infrastructure projects have been sanctioned for the 'good' of the city. Due to ignorance of all the concerned authorities, mangroves are decreasing in Mumbai. These include various road-widening projects, construction of new flyovers, etc. Consequently many trees face death in the name of development. The entire stretch of trees at Upper Juhu and DN Nagar Link Road in Andheri has been shaved, barring just a few. A bystander says, “Since the trees were all dry, they had to be cut by the BMC to avert any mishap.” More than 50 trees have been cut and the BMC claims that the trees were infected by bugs, but most locals believe that they were killed for ulterior motives. Now the question arises: How can all trees at the same stretch die a natural death? And if they did, wasn't there a way to save them? AN ATTACK ON MANGROVES Mangroves are critical for maintaining our ecosystem, especially Mumbai and its surrounding region. Mangroves are also the best forms of natural protection. As natural barriers, they reduce soil erosion and provide stability to the land. Not only do they act as a barrier, but also as a source of livelihood to thousands of economically weaker sections of coastal communities. Illegal dumping, encroachment, toxic pollutants are some of the most common threats to the mangrove cover of Mumbai. Lokhandwalas Back Road area is a classic example of depleting mangroves. Untill few years back, there used to be a large land full of mangroves but now they only occupy THE SELFLESS ACTS OF TREES • TREES PRODUCE OXYGEN • TREES CLEAN THE SOIL • TREES CONTROL NOISE POLLUTION • TREES SLOW STORM WATER RUNOFF • TREES ARE CARBON SINKS • TREES CLEAN THE AIR • TREES SHADE AND COOL • TREES ACT AS WINDBREAKS • TREES FIGHT SOIL EROSION • TREES INCREASE PROPERTY VALUES the boundary, while the inner area has been totally cleared by land mafias. Residents of the area Dhawala Shah, Ganesh and Komila Bains express, “There used to be a large area covered by mangroves but slowly and gradually, the selfish and self centered land mafias have started encroaching this area in some very clever ways. The BMC officials have started dumping debris on the mangroves which makes this place look filthy. Also, the water flow has been clogged so that the Mangroves die due to dryness. They have also started foreign weed plantation there which kills the soil in such a manner that no tree can grow around them. They will first kill the Mangroves and when no tree will be left, they will start commercial constructions.” On being asked if they have raised their voice against this to the authorities, they said “The only India's National Air Monitoring Programme (NAMP) classifies air pollution into four air pollutants: 1. Sulphur Dioxide, 2. Oxides of Nitrogen, including Nitrogen Dioxide, 3. Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), 4. Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM/PM10). 5. At almost all observation points, there has been an increase in air pollution in Mumbai in 2011 – 2012 as compared to the last two years. 6. The month of December experiences the highest level of air pollution in Mumbai. Air pollution levels start rising post-monsoon. 7. 451 new vehicles are registered in Mumbai every day. These motor vehicles are deteriorating the quality of air. Also, slow moving traffic leads to increased air pollution as compared to smooth flowing traffic. 8. Increased construction (housing, Metro, bridges, roads, etc) has increased dust and Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM). 9. International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the UN World Health Organization (WHO), declared in October 2013 that Air Pollution is carcinogenic which increases the risk of lung and bladder cancer. WHO's cancer research department came to this finding after reviewing thousands of scientific papers. answer to this question is money. The government official's main motive is also to clear the mangroves and earn money by commercializing this land.” To save the depleting Mangroves they continued, “We need to make people aware about the importance of mangroves and how they should save them for a stable future. If they understand, they will definitely move towards saving Mangroves by at least not throwing any waste in that area.” It is important for us to save the mangroves because in their absence, we fear that Mumbai will be extremely vulnerable to climate change.
