Over the weekend, I spent
some time looking for safety
information specific to spider
lifts. My company has one
now and I’ve talked to quite
a few other arborists who are
making that purchase, too.
We bought ours to improve our safety
as we tackle the problem of thousands of dead backyard ash trees. So, I
thought I’d see what others are saying
about these amazing machines.

In my searching and reading, I found
very little specific to these compact
lifts. Safety advice was always very
general - stay focused, clip in, pay
attention to your surroundings. These
were followed by descriptions of tree
work related deaths and injuries - who
doesn’t like a bit of gore. There were
two main types of accidents. The first
was arborists who weren’t harnessed
to the bucket and got bounced; the
second was homeowners surprised by
a tree that fell the wrong way. No real
surprises there.
So, here are my conclusions after an
afternoon of cringeworthy
reading:
1. If you’re curious about spider lift safety, come to our fall conference or one of our conferences this year. We are working at get-
ting some safety experts to talk about spider lift safety and safety in general. You’ll get better information at a conference than in the maga-
zines.
2. No matter how busy you get, never let safety out of your mind. Whether you’re a bucket operator, ground man or owner, everyone plays a part in getting through a job without an accident.
3. Homeowners are often foolish and confident enough to tackle danger-
ous jobs with no professional ex-
perience. Get the word out when-
ever you can. Not only are they taking work away from us arborists, they’re hurting and killing each oth-
er or themselves.

York State Fair duties from Brian Skinner. For more than 30 years, NYSA
members have attended the Great NYS
Fair to provide assistance and information to Fairgoers. Jim is looking for

4. No matter where you live in NY, you will be, or are, dealing with thousands of dead and dying ash trees. Ash trees are especially brittle when dead. A couple weeks ago I was talking to a Cornell tree scientist. He told me that within one year of death, an ash tree is at high risk of failure at the base. Watch out for those dead ash trees and don’t climb them.
Well, get back to work and be safe. I

On Saturday, June 13, Planting
Fields Arboretum hosted our 26
climbers and a large contingent
of volunteers, judges, technicians
and families for the Tree Climbing
Championship. Climbers were
judged on their skill, speed and
precision in five events – the Work
Climb, Aerial Rescue, Throwline,
Belayed Speed Climb and Secured
Footlock with the top three finishers competing in the Masters
Challenge.
After a full day of competition,
Brian Krawczyk from Birchcrest
Tree & Landscape, Inc., Tadhg
Leahy from Remy Tree, Inc., and
Lawrence Schultz from Central
Park Conservancy finished as the
overall top performers, and then
competed in the Masters Challenge
to see who would be named champion.
In an extremely close contest,
Brian Krawczyk emerged as the
winner of the Masters Challenge.
He will represent New York State
at the International Tree Climbing
Championship, April 2-3, 2016 in
San Antonio, TX. Congratulations
Brian!
As an added value for our members
and climbers, TCC co-chair Joel
Greifenberger worked with the ISA
Certification Department to offer
Tree Worker Climbing Specialist
Evaluator and Aerial Specialist Evaluator training sessions, and the Tree
Worker Climber Specialist skills test
at the competition. More than 20
people went through the evaluator
training and thirteen climbers received a waiver for the skills portion
of the TWCS exam. It is our goal
to offer the evaluator training and
skills test annually at the tree climb-
ing competition.

and technicans who gave their time
to make our event another memorable experience. Special thanks

of Certification, and Kathy Phelan, Executive Secretary of the ISA
Atlantic Chapter in Nova Scotia, for
