Welcome
About Glasgow
It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome
the World Irish Dance Championships back
to Glasgow in 2016.
This will be the fourth time the city has hosted these wonderful
championships that always bring so much vibrancy, colour and
entertainment to Glasgow and remind us of the rich Gaelic
culture we share with our Irish cousins.
Scotland and Ireland are shaped by their Gaelic roots. The World Irish Dance
Championships are very special and highly valued by our citizens many of whom
are proud to trace their roots back to Ireland. These Championships have become
part of the fabric of this city and continue to reinforce our Celtic connections across
the centuries.
They always present a wonderful opportunity to showcase our joint Celtic heritage.
So it is with great pride I welcome talented dancers from across the world to perform
and thrill us in Glasgow.
I can assure you that wherever you go in our wonderful city, you’re guaranteed great
hospitality and a warm and friendly welcome. As we say ‘People Make Glasgow’.
Warmest regards
Councillor Sadie Docherty
The Rt Hon The Lord Provost of Glasgow
Glasgow was recently voted the
“friendliest city in the world”
in a poll by Rough Guides
and highlighted as a must
visit destination by leading
international titles such as the
New York Times.
Firmly established as one of the
world’s great cities, Glasgow has
a wealth of cultural attractions,
world class architecture and
design, the best shopping in
the UK outside London’s West
End and a cosmopolitan café
culture and vibrant, burgeoning
restaurant scene - there will
always be something for you to
do when you are not competing.
Glasgow stand in
Montreal
2
With all this, plus a fantastic
year-round events calendar,
some of Scotland’s best hotels
and the famously warm and
witty Glaswegian personality,
it’s no wonder the city
enjoys a position as a
must-visit destination.
Come and meet representatives
from Glasgow at Palais des
congrès de Montréal on 1st
and 2nd April.
We can’t wait to once again experience
the electric atmosphere of the
Championships and are very much
looking forward to meeting you.
Visit our stand and learn more about our
wonderful city and we’ll be on hand to
help with any enquires you may have.
3
Combining the energy and sophistication of a great international
city with friendly, hospitable people, Glasgow is a vibrant, exciting
destination - the city centre is compact and getting around is easy.
TAKE AN OPEN TOP BUS TOUR
For an entertaining introduction
to the city, join the red city
sightseeing bus on their hop on
hop off tour. With 28 stops across
Glasgow, you can get around all
the major attractions and learn
about the city’s history too.
In addition to the Championships; officials, competitors, their
families and friends may want to get to know the city better. Take
some time to explore – from beautiful architecture, to fun family
attractions, outstanding shopping and an amazing selection of
museums and art galleries, there’s something for everyone.
Things to do in Glasgow
SHOP ON THE STYLE MILE
CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH
With the best shopping in the UK
outside London’s west end, and over
1,500 shops, Glasgow is a shopper’s
paradise! The biggest brands and major
retailers can be found in the Style Mile
– the place to head for shopping malls,
department stores, high street favourites
and designer boutiques. With most
shops open to 7pm weekdays, and
8pm Thursdays, there is plenty time for
hunting down a bargain or picking up
some souvenirs.
Glasgow born architect, designer and artist
Charles Rennie Mackintosh is internationally
recognised as one of the most creative figures
of the early 20th century. His elegant Art
Nouveau work is distinctive and inspirational.
Many of his best known works are in Glasgow
– from the Glasgow School of Art, to Queen’s
Cross Church, House for an Art Lover and
The Mackintosh House - and when you need
a break, head to The Willow Tearooms for
afternoon tea for a well-earned treat!
4
As a UNESCO City of Music, Glasgow hosts
an average 130 music events each week,
from small intimate gigs at historic venues
such as the Barrowland Ballroom to full scale
performances by international superstars at
the fabulous new SSE Hydro Arena.
FOOD & DRINK
VISIT OVER 20 FREE MUSEUMS & GALLERIES
Glasgow has more than 20 museums
and galleries, most offering FREE
admission. Don’t miss the city’s
principal collection Kelvingrove Art
Gallery & Museum, and the newest
addition to Glasgow’s portfolio,
Riverside Museum housing its world
class transport collection. Berthed
alongside, you will also find the Tall
Ship Glenlee where you can step on
board for a taste of Glasgow’s maritime
heritage. For full-on interactive fun,
head to the Glasgow Science Centre,
perfect for kids of all ages.
LIVE MUSIC
PARKS & GARDENS
In traditional Scots Gaelic, Glasgow
means “Dear Green Place” and it more
than lives up to this reputation with
over 90 parks and gardens – you’ll
find attractions nestled in many of
them, such as the Peoples Palace in
Glasgow Green, the Burrell Collection
in Pollok Park or House for an Art
Lover at Bellahouston Park. If you’re
looking for a place to relax away from
the Championships you’ll find a green
space that fits the bill.
You’ll never go hungry in this city!
Glasgow has a delicious eating and drinking
scene with a huge selection to suit all tastes
and budgets. From traditional Scottish food,
to Indian, Italian, Thai and Japanese – you can
literally eat your way around the world! Many
restaurants do a fixed price early evening
menu – and check out the exclusive World
Irish Dance Championships dinearound
offer courtesy of the Glasgow Restaurant
Association, details can be found on page 11.
