DIRECTOR'S DISPATCH
The best definition of science I ever heard was this: It is
our effort to understand how the world works. Opening
February 6, 2016, we are pleased to offer you an
experience that will show you how our planet’s most
violent forces work. Nature Unleashed uses interactive
displays and animations to empower you to start an
earthquake, simulate a tsunami, generate a volcano, and
stand in the center of a roaring tornado—then walk away
safely with a deeper scientific understanding of them.
This highly interactive exhibit will immerse you in these
powerful events. It will take you behind the news stories
to explore these natural forces and real stories of the
resilience and creativity of the people who survive and
study them.
I hope you will explore our dynamic relationship with
Mother Earth by visiting Nature Unleashed. And please
come join us to explore the rest of the universe in our new
and improved planetarium
featuring full-dome
video technology.
Pink Palace Benefactor Passes Away at 91
Our museum and our entire
community were saddened by
the loss of Richard H. Bodine
December 16. Our deepest
sympathy goes out to his wife,
Museum Trustee, Peggy Bodine,
and her and Dick's family.
"Dick" was that rarest and best of
men, a true friend. His kindness,
ready wit, and leadership will be deeply missed. His
example will keep us strong.

CTI 3D Giant Theater open MON-SUN
The CTI 3D Giant Theater is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. At present,
we have a total of 27 assistive listening devices. Nine of these devices (Captiview) provide
closed captions. We also have 18 devices that enhance the volume for those visitors with
hearing issues and those devices are also designed to provide a descriptive narrative of on
screen actions on an additional audio channel. At the present, not all of the documentary
movies we have shown in the theater have been digitally encoded by the documentary
movie distributor with the necessary codes for the Captiview closed caption device and the
DoReMi descriptive narrative capabilities. We have been informed that in the near future
more documentary movies are being encoded with closed caption viewer Captiview and
the DoReMi descriptive narrative features. The theater provides hearing impaired customers
with a copy of the movie’s script with a red flashlight, for low light level reading. Customers
in need of these devices should call our reservations number, (901)636-2362, so that we
can make appropriate accommodations to serve their needs.

SHARPE PLANETARIUM
THE GRAND OPENING OF THE NEW
PLANETARIUM January 30, 2016
immersive digital planetarium functions simulate not just
the earth and sky, but can take audiences to the edge
of the known universe. The MEDIAGLOBE’s famous
Graphical Control Interface (GUI) is now as powerful
as it is easy to use.
Full Dome Digital Video is finally here and it will
revolutionize your planetarium experience. Get
completely immersed in sight, sound and comfort
like never before!
Our dome is 50' across. Its top is 32’ 6” off-of-floor. The screen
area is 3,925 sq. ft., making it the largest projection screen in
Memphis.
The projected image is 2400 pixels in diameter, placing
more than 4.5 million pixels on the dome. The software
generates real-time simulations of the cosmos as seen
from Earth or anywhere in the known universe. It not
only simulates space travel but can simulate time travel
as well by showing how the night sky changes over 1
million years in the past and up to 1 million years into
the future.
The new Planetarium seats 145 people, with 5 designated
wheelchair spaces.
The Digital planetarium system is a SUPERMEDIAGLOBE II
manufactured by the Konica Minolta Planetarium Co., LTD
in Tokyo, Japan, and installed by Magna-tech Electronic
Company in Miami, Florida.
The advanced high-definition, single-lens, all-sky digital planetarium
projection system that combines Konica Minolta's famouse optical
technology with a stunning color-rich, high-contrast 4K projector!
SUPER MEDIAGLOBEII is the latest top-level
model of the Konica
Minolta MEDIAGLOBE
series, the world’s first
full-color single-lens
digital planetarium. It
projects simulations of
the latest information
gathered about our
universe and presents it
with leading-edge digital

Firefall
Throughout Earth’s violent history, impacts from comets and
asteroids have mercilessly shaped its surface.
This ceaseless FIREFALL is our only tangible connection to
the universe beyond and is an ever-present reminder of our
own humble beginnings in the hostile environment of space.
Seasonal Stargazing
Find out more about “what’s up tonight” in just a few
minutes than some people do in a lifetime! Hop through
constellations, learn cool star names, and groove to
planetarium space music in this Full-Dome audiovisual
experience.
Astronaut
The exploration of space is the greatest endeavour that
humankind has ever undertaken. What does it take to be
part of this incredible journey? What does it take to become
an astronaut?
Experience a rocket launch from inside the body of an
astronaut. Explore the amazing worlds of inner and outer
space, from floating around the International Space Station
to maneuvering through microscopic regions of the human
body.

Comments from visitors who attended a sample show:
"Great plan! As an astronomy teacher at
U of Memphis, I would love for this to be
accessible to my students as well as students
of all ages, like my 6-year-old son!"
"The show was excellent. What promise
for educating school children and adults
- make us use our imaginations as we
explore our universe as well as all facets
of education.”

CTI 3D GIANT THEATER
Journey to Space 3D
Opens January 9, 2016
The Pink Palace is ready
to take you out of this
world! Journey to Space
3D showcases the exciting
plans NASA and the space
community are working on and
the challenges they must overcome
to carry out missions. What once was
considered science fiction is now science fact!
The film calls attention to the reality that the space program did not
die with the end of the Shuttle Program in 2011. It is, instead, vibrantly
alive.
Journey to Space provides a timely review of how NASA has been
transitioning from the end of the Space Shuttle Era to a much more
ambitious future that will forever change how we live and operate in
space as a species. The audience is sure to be filled with excitement
about America’s future in space, and be much more knowledgeable
about how those plans are coming to action!
Fun Facts:
•When the Space Shuttle rocketed off the launch pad for the first
time in 1981, it became the world’s first reusable spacecraft to carry
humans into orbit.
•The United States, Russia, Canada, Europe, and Japan all worked
together to make the International Space Station.
• The International Space Station weighs 924,739 pounds, is the size
of an American football field with the end zones included, and it’s
roomier than a six-bedroom house.
• When the ISS celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2010, there were
1.5 billion statute miles on its odometer (that’s the equivalent of eight
round trips to the Sun).
•The Space Shuttle Orbiter is 122 ft long (that’s longer than 3 school
buses) and weighs 178,000 lbs (that’s 13.4 African Elephants)!
