Welcome to Simon Fraser University
Message from the Vice-Chancellor and President of
Simon Fraser University
I would like to welcome Fraser
International College (FIC) students to
one of Canada’s leading universities,
situated in one of the most beautiful and
vibrant cities in the world. Simon Fraser
University (SFU) opened its doors in
1965, challenging convention and striving
for innovation in higher education. Now,
four decades later, SFU has emerged as
a formidable academic presence with an
international reputation for innovative
teaching, research and community
outreach. This reputation is built on our
strengths in the liberal arts and sciences,
as well as our distinctive interdisciplinary
and professional programs, and our
commitment to the close integration of
leading-edge research and teaching.
of our students. SFU faculty members
are recognized internationally and
our students excel in their fields after
graduation. We believe this record will
be enhanced by our association with FIC
and our connection with its students.
Our record is one of embracing risk and
bold initiative; a record that is reflected

Dr Michael Stevenson

living on SFU’s campuses. Our student
residences, student services, and
our recreation and athletics facilities
and programs provide a welcoming
community, making your transition to
FIC and to SFU an enjoyable experience.
It is my pleasure to invite you to
explore Fraser International College
at Simon Fraser University.
Message from the College Director and Principal of FIC
You are at an important stage in your
life when you have to choose the right
pathway from secondary school to
university. It is an important decision
that can determine your future career.
At FIC, our focus is to help you make
the right decision and make the most
of the opportunities available to you in
achieving your ambitions. We provide you
with a unique pathway that prepares you
for entry into post-secondary studies and
allows for a smooth transition into SFU.
The FIC programs and approach
to teaching are special. University
designed programs, taught by qualified
instructors on the main SFU campus,
ensure that our students have the
very best preparation for the demands
of higher education in Canada.
FIC students are treated like university
students and, with the added benefits of
smaller classes, students receive more
personalized attention in a dynamic and
supportive learning environment that
better equips them for life at university.
In choosing an FIC program, you will be
following thousands of other successful
students who have achieved their
ambitions by joining SFU, which is
widely recognized as one of the most
creative and influential universities in
Canada. Take the first step towards
achieving your goals with FIC. We look
forward to welcoming and supporting
you on your journey to SFU.

Guaranteed entry into
second year at SFU
FIC’s UTP Stage II programs are
the first year equivalent of SFU’s
Bachelor Degree Programs.
You are guaranteed transfer to
SFU when you have completed the
specified courses and met the GPA

face-to- face teaching. This extra hour
of academic contact allows you more
time to fully develop your knowledge
and understanding of each course.
University campus location
FIC is located on SFU’s Burnaby campus.
FIC students enjoy full access to all of
the university facilities and services
including libraries, computer laboratories,
sporting facilities, clubs and associations

Life on campus
FIC is located on SFU’s Burnaby campus in the thriving and
culturally diverse city of Burnaby, a 30-minute drive from
downtown Vancouver. The Burnaby campus is one of the most
awe-inspiring university settings on the continent, offering a
stunning panorama of mountains, cities, ocean and islands from
its location at the summit of 400-metre high Burnaby Mountain.
Designed by internationally acclaimed
architect Arthur Erickson, the campus
has everything one would expect of a
major university, yet on a scale that will
make you feel at home. The vast majority
of students pursue their studies on the
pedestrian-friendly campus, which houses
administrative and academic offices, the
main library, student services, on-campus
residences, and the new UniverCity
community of residences and shops.
For students wanting to live on campus,
SFU provides fully-catered single room
accommodation as well as an on-campus
hotel where visiting family members can
stay. Buses operate between the campus
and Greater Vancouver’s rapid transit
system at the foot of Burnaby Mountain on
a regular basis. Studying at FIC will give you
access to all of these facilities and more.
There are plenty of opportunities for
students to get immersed in their campus
life. The Simon Fraser Student Society
funds nearly 100 clubs catering to
endless interests. Numerous events such
as Terry Fox Day, Clubs Week and Gung
Haggis Fat Choy foster multicultural ties
and connect people from all walks of life.
SFU Clubs Week
This provides both FIC and SFU students
the opportunity to meet with members
of a wide array of clubs that exist at
the University. SFU Clubs Week runs
the second week of every term and
during this time, students can choose to
become members of the more than 100
SFU clubs. These include professional
as well as fun clubs, such as the
Association of Latin American Students,
Burnaby Mountain Toastmasters,
Chinese Culture Club, Engineers
Without Borders, Food Club, Games
Developers Club, International Business
Association and many, many more!
Sports Clubs
Joining a sports club is an excellent way to
meet new people, learn new skills, and enjoy
a sport or activity that interests you! They
are also a great way for student organizers to
gain valuable leadership, management and
organizational skills. There are many sports
clubs including Badminton, Cheerleading,
Cricket, Dodgeball, Field Hockey, Golf,
Ice Hockey, Kendo, Kung Fu, Lacrosse,
Rowing, Rugby, Ski/Snowboarding, Table
Tennis, Tennis, Triathlon, Ultimate Frisbee,
Volleyball and Waterpolo to name a few.
