It’s very likely that most of you know this already. And before I go on I am also aware that: a) many of you were born after her reign and have very little idea of who she was and care even less, and b) many more of you are sick to the back teeth of hearing about her. But the fight over her legacy - over history - is fierce. And we should all have our say, lest David Cameron’s assertion that, “We’re all Thatcherites now” takes hold. Thatcher was first elected as British Prime Minister in May, 1979. Arriving at 10 Downing Street, surrounded by photographers and supporters, she paraphrased the Catholic Prayer of Saint Francis: “Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error, may we bring truth. Where there is doubt, may we bring faith. And where there is despair, may we bring hope”. It’s fair to say that in the eleven years that followed, harmony, truth, faith and hope were in short supply. Indeed, most Scots seemed relieved when she was finally deposed in Nov, 1990. In recent weeks much has been said and written about the hated Poll Tax, introduced in Scotland a year ahead of England and Wales, and the Miners’ Strike, where Thatcher is still seen by right wing commentators as finally breaking the backs of the unions (in fact more than a quarter of working adults in Scotland still choose to join a trade union). The sinking of the retreating Belgrano warship during the Falklands war has also excited much comment. Her somewhat heartless response to the deaths of 323 people, “Rejoice” is well known. What many don’t know is that after being grilled about the massacre on the BBC’s flagship news show Nationwide, her husband Denis went radge at the show’s producer yelling that his wife had been “stitched up by bloody BBC poofs and Trots”. And there is no doubt that Thatcher, like much of the British establishment at the time, was antigay. In a speech to the Conservative Party conference in Oct, 1987 she spoke about education: “…but it’s the plight of individual boys and girls which worries me most... Children who need to be taught to respect traditional moral values are being taught that they have an inalienable right to be gay... All of those children are being cheated of a sound start in life - yes cheated.” In May, 1988, Section 28 of the local government act was passed, banning local authorities from ‘promoting’ homosexuality (Clause 2a in Scotland). This in effect prevented teachers from even mentioning the subject in schools, and inevitably led to the homophobic bullying of gay and straight kids just for being a bit different. O P INIO N Clause 2a was repealed in June 2000 in Scotland as one of the first pieces of legislation enacted by the new Scottish Parliament. At the time in England, the young David Cameron would repeatedly attack Tony Blair’s plans to abolish Section 28, publicly denouncing then-Prime Minister Blair as being “anti-family”. In 2003, Cameron supported a Conservative amendment on abolition that retained certain parts, which experts and campaigners described as “Section 28 by the back door”. Fortunately this was unsuccessful, and Section 28 was repealed by the Labour government in England without such concessions. It wasn’t until June 2009 that Cameron formally apologised for his party introducing the law, stating that it was “a mistake”. I came out as bi just as Section 28 was being introduced. In the late 80’s, going to protests and demos “Against the Clause” was as natural as popping down to the local gay bar. I hated Thatcher, and the very idea that you could be queer and a Tory was unthinkable. But it wasn’t just LGBT rights, Thatcherism seemed to want to take away everything I cared about. Schools, hospitals, libraries... all suffered cut backs almost out of existence. Things that as a nation we owned - like gas and electricity were sold off. She diminished communities, denied that society even existed and taught that greed, above everything else, was good. Whenever the economy got into trouble it was the poor that suffered whilst the rich - who caused the problems in the first place - expanded their wealth. Demonstrations were frequently crushed with a police force that seemed more like an armed wing of the state. I really hated her. I wanted her and everything she stood for to die and stay dead. When I was a child my father was a little too quick to use his fists in temper. I distinctly remember thinking that one day that I would be bigger, older and stronger and would return to give him a good kicking. I never did, although I still feel strongly that what he did was utterly wrong. Revenge would be to reduce myself to his level. So I didn’t cheer “Rejoice” at the death of an old woman from a stroke. And face it, Thatcherism is very much alive and well. Denis Thatcher thought his wife had been “stitched up by bloody BBC poofs and Trots” obar dheadhainn Aberdeen G AY S CE NE #OMFORTABLEANDCONlDENTIALENVIRONMENT 2 ESPECTFORYOUANDYOURRELATIONSHIPS where and when the team are online or out on the scene. Thanks are due to all those who have passed on their comments on my first column- it’s appreciated. So keep those tweets and emails coming in and let’s get down to business. First up, the latest news on Pride Scotia is that it’s to be on Sat 15th Jun. Plans are for the Pride March to assemble outside the Scottish Parliament for the usual speeches before heading up the Royal Mile at 1pm. Confirmed destination is Bristo Square and Teviot Row House – where there will be entertainment on indoor and outdoor stages, a Health and Community Fair, an unlicensed Tea Dance, a Club Room with local DJs marshalled by Cilla Slack, and a Sports Bar with sport on wide screen TVs. More details will be available in the Pride Guide which will be available in the pubs and clubs and online at www.pride-scotia.org a few weeks before the event. As most of the funding for Pride comes from advertising in the Guide or the hire of stalls at the Health and Community Fair, advertisers and stall holders should contact Pride Scotia asap – E-mail: hello@pride-scotia.org or Tel: 0131-556 9471 or download details from the website. Planet are celebrating 3 years reborn on Fri 17th May! Already??! Their birthday party promises to be a real hoot as this year, John and the staff are going for a Las Vegas vibe. Elvis, apparently, will be in the building, alongside some tasty showgirls. Dresscode is not compulsory, but it’s a chance for all you drag kings and queens to strut your stuff if you’re inclined. Moreover, the whole event is a fundraiser for Pride Scotia, so this is the must attend event of the month in Edinburgh! I had an amazing night in Planet just last week. John and the boys certainly seem to be on to a winner with the crowds packing themselves into the best pre club bar on the scene, with happy days promos running Mon-Thu and their own quiz with prizes up to £100! running on Thu, plus all their house spirits are now top brands. Don’t forget Cilla will be entertaining the crowds now and again too. At the Regent, it’s confirmed that Legendary Quiz Mistress Siobhan has returned with a brand new quiz night held from 8pm on the first Mon of every month, (which in May is Mon 6th). I was in attendance for her Apr return quiz and my old partner in crime certainly had the vibe going! Check it out and maybe you can win a nice prize for testing your knowledge! At Habana they are launching the first ever Golden Pint Awards. Nomination forms are already available from the bar and the Award Ceremony will take place on Sun 26th May, with a fabulous Mystery guest host at the podium. Combine this with the regular Habana offerings and some of the best deals and promotions on the scene your onto a winner! Moving next door to CC Blooms, it just goes from strength to strength in there. Not only is the food awesome but they’re still producing some amazing nights. The launch night of Disc. Co. purveyors of beatucuious beats and smooth groves takes place on Sat 27th Apr with Dale Lush at the decks promising the best mash up of kitsch and current house and disco tunes. The team in CC’s have also confirmed May 25th as the second Disc. Co date. Don’t forget that CC’s also hosts the Church of High Kicks every Sun. Finally, CC’s still has its Thu night Camp evenings! Moving to the Street, if you wanna chill out with a few drinks and nibbles it’s still the place to be! Then as the evening moves into late night pop down stairs and bust some moves. Down Dublin Street at the New Town Bar, the Easter event of Michelle McManus @ the musicals was a smash success - the bar was packed and the crowds went mental. The success has prompted the NTB to announce that this Fringe Festival they are becoming a fully-fledged venue! Not only will the usual Famous Sunday FUNdraiser be on the table, but The new G Spot Show - featuring comedians like JoJo Sutherland, Scott Agnew, Charlie Ross, Stu Murphy, Viv Gee and many more... A dark comedy show called Forever 27 will be travelling up from the South, Glasgow based favourite Susie McCabe will debut her solo show at the NTB and Michelle McManus will take up residence for a week long show! The plan includes the downstairs bar being converted to a 50 seat theatre. Looking at May, Sat 11thth is Bear Night and the following afternoon sees a fetish party in full swing. Sun 26th May is a pants party but the boys will have just completed the Marathon so give their legs a little rub. Finally the makeover in the toilets is complete and it’s looking amazing. I spoke to my pal Stephen at the bar to try and get the Goss surrounding this year’s Pride in the NTB but he was tight lipped, but told me to expect the usual - tits and teeth and a bloody good show! That said, the Regent is still the place for the best selection of beers and ciders in Edinburgh - I just don’t know how they do it! The LGBT Centre For Health and Wellbeing are launching Scotland’s first National LGBT Helpline which goes live on Tue 7th May and will operate every Tue and Wed from Noon-9pm. Stephen McCabe from the centre said, “As you are aware, many of the local LGBT Helplines in Scotland have recently either closed or cut their hours, so the time now is vital to launch a nationwide service where volunteers are trained to offer support with whatever an LGBT person or their family, friends and supporters need. All of our volunteers are trained to offer emotional support with any worries, issues or concerns our callers have. As well as this, we offer non-judgemental support with issues around sex and sexual health, links to LGBT groups across Scotland, and support with LGBT rights issues. We are open to callers from across the whole of Scotland.” The new help line number is 0300 123 2523. I wish all involved the best of luck for the launch of this vital service. Well what a month Apr has been! The giver of Section 28 (clause 2a in Scotland) has departed and as in life proved to be equally as controversial in death. It’s thinking of how far we have come really puts into focus why we still need and should support our Pride events. Please put 15th Jun in your diary and join us as we celebrate who and what we are and that we are lucky enough to be able to celebrate. This was when Spain was still suffering the dictatorship of General Franco – a deeply authoritarian defender of the catholic faith. I recall thinking. “How optimistic are they? Gay Liberation in Spain?” How foolish was my pessimism then, and how far has the world come since. In the past decade a democratic socialist government in Spain has faced down right-wing and catholic protest marches and legalised gay marriage. Recently, we have read about horrific new laws proposed or brought in in Russia and in parts of Africa and of people still being executed for their sexuality. We have loud homophobes here and worse in America. However, Scotland’s homophobe-in-chief was recently silenced, hoist by his own petard, as the cliché goes, - and it is possible to feel some sympathy for the long life of emotional confusion that it seems the former Scottish Cardinal has led. A kind of life led by so many in the past and still by LGBTIs in many lands. But things are changing. We have many powerful friends today. U N Secretary General Ban Ki-moon gave a speech in Norway on April 15th – Human Rights Day about homophobia in all its forms. He made a very full and impassioned call for LGBTI rights. He said, “Let me say this loud and clear: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are entitled to the same rights as everyone else. They, too, are born free and equal. I stand shoulder to shoulder with them in their struggle for human rights.” He went on to refer to his intervention in Malawi, where gay men were given long prison sentences for their wedding, and condemned proposed laws in Ukraine which would make a supportive speech such as his illegal there. Stonewall Scotland have posted a video of his speech on their website. We live increasingly in a globalised world, with communication, trade and travel making us increasingly interconnected. One global event in the LGBTI calendar is I D A H O day – International Day Against Homophobia. May 17th. A Friday this year – no excuse not to celebrate! This event – commemorating the day on which the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of illnesses – has grown remarkably in a few years. It was started by a charismatic French Caribbean guy, Louis-Georges Tin, and quickly spread world-wide. Before his resignation, President Lula of Brazil made it a national day. One of the big ideas this year is the IDAHO Global Rainbow Flashmob. At least seventeen countries are already involved. Manchester based L G F, one of the largest LGBTI organisations in the U K is calling on LGTI communities and our allies to get “Flying the Flag” on May 17th. They plan a series of events in the north-west of England, and it appears that in Scotland events are already planned in Glasgow and Aberdeen. Maybe many more will be announced in the coming weeks. (www.lgf.org.uk/flag) One of the ideas in Manchester is for a “Kiss-in Flashmob” in the city centre at 1pm on Saturday 18th. Sounds like fun! Be great if some kiss-ins were to be organised in Scotland. Never mind the weather on the day – go out and give your friends and lovers a kiss and a cuddle, all in a great cause! You will be part of a global action. Under the heading, “We will never be silent,” organisations representing LGBTI, women’s and human rights groups are planning a wave of action across South Africa – which hopefully will register beyond that nation’s borders. Activists in Georgia plan to hold a silent protest. Last year, a peaceful march there was attacked by anti-gay protestors and some of the victims were arrested… Flashmobs are planned from Quito to St Petersburg. It’ll be very interesting to see the response in St Petersburg. This is a chance to stand up for and with our sisters and brothers globally. If you go online at International Day Against Homophobia you will see the mass of events that are planned. To be living here and now as LGBTI people is to be historically and geographically very privileged. Yet there are still battles to be fought and won. And for our kin in many parts of the world the struggle has hardly begun. Let’s get it happening. And if public embracing and kissing can help the cause, what’s not to like? In 2004, he founded Napier Bathrooms & Interiors. He says that he focuses on forging relationships with quality branded manufacturers and suppliers. This enables his company to offer its clients unrivalled care and attention to detail, products and services that aim to meet individual client budgets and expectations. G eberit AquaClean with Napier Bathrooms brings together pleasant comfort, lasting quality, and elegant design in the bathroom. Discover the new generation of WCs which make a daily contribution to your well-being, with outstanding hygiene: a jet of warm water cleans you gently and pleasantly. Geberit AquaClean thus offers an attractive alternative to the classic bidet. For a feeling of freshness and cleanliness. Simply at the touch of a button. The new display at Napier allows clients to experience the Geberit AquaClean 8000plus which leaves nothing to be desired and offers many extra pampering functions in addition to the shower function: the spray temperature and intensity can be adjusted to suit your personal preferences. The pulsating massage function has an invigorating effect, while the soft lady wash is ideal for ensuring gentle personal hygiene for women. As soon as you sit down on the shower toilet, the automatic odour extraction function switches on, creating a pleasant ambience of freshness in the room. After the spray has finished, the integrated warm-air dryer dries you off in comfort. The final practical touch: all functions can be individually adjusted and your preferences saved via remote control. Water has always been of central importance for us as human beings. And we cannot do without the liquid element in our daily personal hygiene. In many cultures, cleaning with water after going to the toilet is natural, as it is the purest medium for personal hygiene. In fact it is surprising that we largely make do with paper. Modern toilet with sophisticated technology Geberit AquaClean is a WC that goes back to the source for freshness and cleanliness in the search for better hygiene: water. A jet of water, which can be regulated individually, cleans you gently and pleasantly. Geberit AquaClean thus offers an attractive alternative to the classic bidet. Using it is simple but effective. Added value for health and wellbeing Depending on the WC model, the shower experience can be enhanced by additional functions such as an oscillating shower arm, the ladies’ shower for natural intimate personal hygiene, a pulsating massage shower, warm-air dryer, remote control or memory function. Quality in materials and comfort Geberit AquaClean combines design, comfort and functionality for your bathroom. It is available as a WC enhancement solution or WC complete solution, depending on your preferences and living situation. The same standards of quality and comfort apply to all models – the differences lie in how they are fitted out, from simple to luxurious. Design element, to suit any bathroom Geberit sets high standards for aesthetics too. The WC enhancement solutions, which are easy to install, fit conventional toilets perfectly. And the elegance of a Geberit AquaClean WC complete solution convinces even the skilled eye of the designer. Retrofitting Even for the subsequent renovation of your bathroom, there is an attractive design solution for retrofitting a Geberit AquaClean in your bathroom/WC: with the Geberit AquaClean design panel, the existing water connection can also be used for the shower function, with the water supply being concealed out of sight behind the design panel. This ingenious bathroom planning solution thus leaves the basic structure intact. Would you like more information? The tale of 6 out of work steel workers from Sheffield who decide to see if there is money to be made by taking their clothes off was taken the heart of not just the British viewing public but cinema goers around the world. The movie was of course the Full Monty. The story set against an industry still reeling from the effects of Thatcherism and the human impact of discovering sexuality, suicide and self-image was transformed into somewhat of a lack lustre Musical when the action was transposed to Chicago. Now the films writer has corrected this mistake by bringing the Full Monty on UK tour. This play version expands the 88 minute film into a two hour stage production and it’s a real treat to behold. The increase of running time has allowed the script to be fully opened up and the stellar cast revel in portraying perhaps the most human characters on the British stage. Kenny Doughty as Gaz takes the best of Robert Carlyle’s film performance and enriches it with more compassion and comedy as Gaz struggles to raise the funds in order keep his son Nathan in his Life. All the film characters are here in fully fleshed out form. TV’s the Bill veteran Simon Rouse turning in a fine tuned performance as Gerald who is struggling to stop his wife from going mad on the high street with a Barclaycard whilst she doesn’t know that he is not working. The particular highlight of the show is the relationship of Lomper (played by Coronation street star Craig Casey) and Guy (played by Kieran O’Brien). In the film version the fact these characters were gay and start to fall in love was touched upon by a touch of hands and a loving look. In the stage production this has been opened up in a full scene where they actually discuss sexuality, when Guy asks Lomper when did he realise he was gay. It’s an incredibly touching moment performed to perfection. This is a tight show filled with humour and pathos and excellently directed by Daniel Lewis with assistance from former Eastender Jack Ryder as associate Director. The final scenes of the play turn the theatre into a working men’s club with the female audience and several male audience members baying for the cast to go the legendary Full Monty. If you want to see if they do then check out the UK tour which includes stops at His Majesty’s theatre Aberdeen. This really is comedy theatre at its very best. Brett Herriot The Full Monty is a tight show filled with hunour and pathos.
