Q-5 Lake St.Francis Renegade Bass Q5 Lake St. Francis August 16th, 2014 Cornwall Ontario-August 16th, 2014: The last Renegade Bass qualifier for 2014 took place on Lake St Francis. Anglers had access to over sixty kilometers of water along that stretch of the St Lawrence Seaway. Many who prefished the week before faced mostly rainy conditions, but things changed on the day of the event as it was mostly clear with only a bit of rain at weigh-in time. On the morning of the event, conditions were mostly cloudy and winds were minimal. The winds picked up a bit with some gustly conditions at times during midafternoon. Teams spread throughout the body of water, with some boats reporting that they had ran beyond South Lancaster in search of their fish. Back at the weigh-in site at the end of the day, many teams reported that the bite was better during the morning than in the afternoon. There were a fair amount of big bags brought to the scales at weigh-in time with roughly a fifth of them topping twenty pounds. The weigh-in occured at Marina 200, located next to the Cornwall Civic Complex. This time, the teams that dominated the top positions were mostly from Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The winners, Jean-Charles Goulet and PierreHughes Lussier, managed to weigh in a total of 23.58 pounds, being roughly a half pound more than the the highest one day weight brought to the scales when Renegade Bass held their Classic there in 2013. Following the event, Jean-Charles and Pierre-Hughes mentioned that their prefish strategy was for Pierre-Hughes to look for promising deeper areas with help of his Lowrance HDS Structure Scan Unit whereas Jean-Charles focused on shallower areas with specific targets that held promise. In both cases, they avoided broad areas, focusing on smaller ones and avoided those that they considered to be community holes. They explained that due to a cold front in the days leading up to the event, they ultimately needed to run and gun between their deeper and shallower areas in order to get their key bites throughout the day. They added that they used Berkley Gulp! 4 inch Crawlers on a drop shot, green pumpkin coloured tubes, Megabass Jerkbaits and Booyah spinnerbaits to catch their fish. They explained that the use of their Power-Poles was important in the shallows in order to be able to target specific spots. Their victory not only earned them $5000, but also $500 from Ranger Boats through the Ranger Cup program. In second place was the team of Roberto Straccini and Matt Wolfgram, two anglers fishing together for the first time this season. Their total of 23.04 pounds earned them a cheque for $3000. They also received two Shimano Cumara rods as they had signed up for the Shimano Platinum Anglers program. Rounding out the top five was the team of Mark Baker and Eric Ming with a weight of 22.47 pounds, earning them a check for $2000. In fourth was Marc Alain and Jacques Chopin with 22.3 pounds, which earned them a cheque for $1200. Marc and Jacques also won $250 from Rhodes & Williams. In fifth were Steve Barnett and Jack Levert with a weight of 22.05 pounds. They took home a cheque for $1000. All payouts from second through tenth place were increased for this final event of the year courtesy of Hookset Marketing. The Lowrance/Navionics Award was handed out to Carl Roy and Eric Clemot through a random draw. They each received a Navionics Platinum Plus chip. In true Lake St Francis fashion, all three of the fish that qualified for the Big Fish prizes managed to be in the five pound range. The team of Marc Alain and Jacques Chopin took top honors with a 5.64 pound largemouth, earning them a cheque for $550. In a post-event interview, Marc explained that the fish was caught on a Simmz Patriot Tube. Second Big Fish honours belonged to the team of Clancy Mulvihill and David Craig. Their 5.42 pound bass earned them $330. Jean-Charles Goulet and Pierre-Hughes Lussier received the $220 Third Big Fish Prize as they brought a 5.26 pound lunker to the scales. In other news, the team of Dave Roy and Andy Kinstler won the 2014 Team Of The Year Race following a strong ninth place finish at this event. They beat out the second place team in the standings by less than a pound.
