GARRETT — A special
program is planned Saturday
night to rededicate the Paul
Bateman Gym at Garrett High
School.
The ceremony comes 44 years
and four days after the first game
was played in the facility on Jan.
29, 1969.
The Garrett-Keyser-Butler
school board issued a proclamation naming the gym for its
longtime athletic director Paul
“Fuzzy” Bateman in April 1968.
More than 2,800 basketball
fans came to watch the
Railroaders play the first game in
the brand-new gym against the

NEWS IN BRIEF
County encouraged to
revise floodplain rules
By Aaron Organ
aorgan@kpcnews.net
AUBURN — DeKalb County
will look to pull the floodplain
articles from its unified development ordinance and create a
standalone law that would then
match the state — and, more
importantly, federal — format.
County zoning administrator
Clint Knauer approached the
DeKalb County commissioners
Monday to discuss the nowpressing need to make the move,
because flood season is quickly
approaching.
Knauer explained that the state
has reported complications when
counties used floodplain
ordinances from their unified
development ordinances, which
govern land use and development
throughout the county’s planning
jurisdictions. Knauer said the
nature of the ordinance can
create inconsistencies when
defining certain characteristics
and criteria.

INDIANAPOLIS —
Legislation authored by state
Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn,
to clarify and improve the
process of selling unused
public school buildings passed
the Indiana Senate Tuesday by
a vote of 48-0.
Current law on public
school building sales authorizes a school corporation to
sell a vacant or unused school
building after it is made
available to a charter school
for at least 48 months. Senate
Bill 135 would reduce that
waiting period to two years
and allow school corporations
to receive a waiver to sell an
unused building immediately
if no charter school objects.

LIGONIER — Several volunteer
firefighters and longtime members of the
Ligonier Fire Department were honored
recently for their years of service, and for
outstanding service in the past year. Barry
McDonald was named Firefighter of the

The honors were presented during the
department’s annual awards ceremony and
dinner, held last month.
Recognition was also given to several
volunteers who marked years of service.

“It’s a great

because there is no cost except
their time and their travel,” he said.
“We’ve found some of the

“We need people,” Knox said.
“Right now, the closest site is in

It is anticipated test costs will
increase in 2014 — nearly
doubling to $120 — and testing
will become more rigorous, Knox
said.
Currently, if a student fails one
portion of the GED test, the
student can retake only that portion
for just $20.
Beginning in 2014, even if a
student fails just one section, the
student must take the entire test
again, and pay another $120.
“If a person is thinking about
pursuing their GED, now is the
time,” Knox said. “We’re trying to
use that as a selling point.”
“A lot of people are apprehensive (about going back),” Knox
said. “I always give a lot of credit
to the people who want to go back
and pursue this.
GED programs cover math,
language arts, reading, science and
social studies. The curriculum is
individualized based on each
person’s strong and weak points.
“On the first day, we want to
find out how much they know in
math, science, language arts,
reading and social studies,” Knox
said. “It’s like a one-room
schoolhouse concept.”
Students also take practice
tests before taking the actual
GED test.
Knox has met with school
officials in an effort to reach out to
students who didn’t complete high
school.
“We’re not in competition with
the high schools,” said Knox, a
former school administrator at
Eastside and DeKalb.

going to make a huge difference in these

Hite said in a news release on the EMU
website. “We just want them to know that
people around the world care about them;
not just local people. Everyone around the
world wants to help them out.”
Hite’s father, Brian Hite of
Ligonier, said he is extremely proud
of his daughter and her teammates.
“It will be a very emotional trip
for some of these players,” he said
Tuesday.
Verdi reinforced that thought,
saying that when the team was asked
to help and decided to make the trip
to Newtown, emotions ran high.
“Like the rest of the world, we
feel strongly about reaching out to the
community of Newtown and providing
comfort and assistance in any way that we
can,” Verdi said. “As a father of three
children, I couldn’t imagine the everlasting
devastation that these families must now
endure. ‘Smiles and Basketball’ is one way
that our team, school and community can
unite and provide something positive out of
this horrific experience.”
Verdi said his and the team’s objective is
to help the children and families ofm
Newtown keep moving forward and
understand that they are not alone. The event
will be “an action-packed day of fun, excitement, laughter, smiles and basketball,” he
said.

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Members of the
Eastern Michigan University women’s
basketball team, including West Noble
graduate Chelsea Hite, soon will be headed
to Newtown, Conn., to help stage an
afternoon of basketball instruction
and fun activities for youngsters in
that grief-stricken community.
The event was spearheaded by
Tory Verdi, women’s basketball
coach at EMU, who was born and
raised in Connecticut. His first
coaching experiences include a stint
at Pomperaug High School in
Southbury, Conn., just 10 miles from Hite
Newtown.
On Dec. 14 of last year, 26
shooting deaths at Sandy Hook Elementary
in Newtown shook the entire world,
sparking Verdi’s desire to help the
community in any way possible.
On Feb. 10, Verdi, Hite and more than a
dozen members of the EMU team will work
with the Newtown Youth Basketball Association to stage the “Smiles & Basketball”
clinic at Newtown High School.
The clinic will include three hours of
basketball instruction and an hour of
entertainment. A carnival area will consist of
games, arts and crafts, face painting, a
balloonist and clowns, plus food and prizes.
Eastern’s players will be working at stations
in both the gym and carnival areas.
Hite is a senior at EMU, majoring in
elementary education. She was a three-sport
standout at West Noble and an honor
graduate.

Senate president said Friday, a day
after the House overwhelmingly
passed the bill.
Teresa Paiva Weed said she
remains opposed to the bill and has
heard that the sticking point for
many senators is on how broad of a
religious exemption is included in
the only New England state that
doesn’t allow same-sex marriage.
The Newport Democrat said she
doesn’t want to fast-track the
legislation and promised a “full and
fair debate” on what she said is a
personal and emotional issue for
many lawmakers. She made the
comments during a taping of
WJAR-TV’s “10 News Conference.”
She said she doesn’t know
whether there’s enough support in
the Senate to pass the legislation,
which would make Rhode Island
the 10th state to allow gay marriage.

LAKE JAMES — A live webcam has been
installed at the Pokagon State Park toboggan
run, a news release said.
The refrigerated toboggan run at Pokagon
can now be watched on computer or a handheld device.
With financial support from the Steuben
County Tourism Bureau, the webcam offers a
real-time view of the toboggan run from a
tower overlooking its twin tracks.
The Pokagon toboggan run is the only one
in Indiana and one of only two in the Midwest.
The webcam can be accessed at
TobogganRun.com, where viewers can also
take a virtual toboggan ride and find fees and
hours of operation. The cam is also available on
the bureau’s website at Lakes101.org.
The toboggan run is refrigerated and open
all winter weekends and holidays until Feb. 24
this year. The run can operate when there is no
snow on the ground and temperatures are above

To see riders racing down the toboggan run,

operating hours: Fridays, 5-10 p.m.; Saturday,

certain holidays.
Holiday hours and additional information is
available at TobogganRun.com.
Even when the toboggan run is closed, the
webcam shows local snow and weather
conditions, said Pokagon interpreter Fred
Wooley. Additionally, viewers may see people
hiking the often crowded sidewalk next to the
toboggan run or observe wildlife.
“Who knows what might come zipping by at
other times when the toboggans are not,”
Wooley said.

employee-related flu vaccine policies like IU Health’s,
have in part put a laser-like focus on how health-care
providers ensure employees don’t pass on the flu to
patients.
Douglas Leonard, president of the Indiana Hospital
Association, believes all of his organization’s 174
member hospitals eventually will put mandatory flu
vaccine policies in place for employees, and the consequence for all nonexempt workers who do not comply
may eventually be termination.
Presently, he said, about a third of the hospitals have
established such policies, and the penalties for noncompliant workers have ranged from being ordered to wear
masks to unpaid suspensions to dismissals.
