By Jane Keighley Age Well, Naturally “The World Health Organisation defines health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. A healthy skin contributes greatly to a healthy body. So how can we help our skin and the rest of us to look and be healthy and contribute to our overall health, beauty and sense of wellbeing?,” says Kevin Farrow, author ‘Skin Deep’ (Lothian Books). “It’s no good putting things on your skin that improve your appearance if you’re poisoning your system by doing so.” So it’s important to take a natural approach to anti-ageing. And with so many people conscious of living a pure, natural and organic life, it’s easy. want to maintain your looks into the later years. Fill your plate with plenty of vegetables, leafy salads and opt for whole grain foods,” says Saxelby. We’ve found the best ways to keep you looking young and vibrant. Cosmecanique is a non-invasive anti-ageing treatment for the face and neck that comes to us from France. “The treatment is performed by the Lift 6 – a small, hand-held machine comprising two mechanised flaps that massage the face – like gentle ‘butterfly kisses,” says Cosmecanique Therapist, Lyn Yu of Organic Living Wellness Sanctuary in Mosman. 02 (Oxygen) Facials “Healthy skin requires a delicate balance of oxygen, nutrients, good capillary circulation and excellent lymphatic drainage that enables the body to rid itself of toxins,” says Fiona Selby of Body and Soul Wellness Clinic at Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast. “If the body can’t eliminate this waste then the oxygen levels will drop in the skin causing skin cells to become dry and brittle and eventually die. Your complexion will become dull and lacklustre which will also encourage premature ageing. And no amount of moisturiser will solve the problem, so the key is to replenish the lost oxygen.” Using a specialised delivery system, oxygen, minerals, vitamins and nutrients are sprayed on the face in a fine mist to maximise even absorption. Skin cells become reinvigorated with these vital constituents. Oxygen facials take approximately one hour and the result is supple and glowing skin that is visibly improved. Feed Your Face “Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables are the richest source of antioxidants (molecules that fight free-radicals) and slow the ageing process.” Oily foods – good oil that is – including avocados, oily fish (omega 3’s) nuts, olives and vegetable oils provide essential fatty acids that enable the skin to retain moisture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Cosmecanique “The process stimulates fibroblasts, increasing the production of collagen and elastin in the skin which has decreased due to the ageing process. It also works on the lymphatic system to dispel the build-up of harmful toxins.” Cosmecaniuqe is a relaxing and stimulating treatment that takes approximately 30 minutes. With regular sessions you can expect significant smoothing out of fine lines, softer and more supple skin, improved skin texture and a glowing complexion. And as the skin on the face and neck is very fine and thinner than the rest of the body you will be able to see visible changes after just one treatment. “It’s a natural, holistic face-lift alternative for people who care about their health but still want to maintain their looks,” explains Lyn. More Moisture Researchers from Monash University in Melbourne have found that eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and unsaturated fats and avoiding butter, red meat and sweets prevents wrinkles. Dehydrated skin will increase the appearance of wrinkles so it’s important to use a moisturiser to hydrate the skin. Choose a product to suit your particular skin type and moisturise every day. Nutritionist and author of ‘Nutrition For Life’, (Hardie Grant Books, rrp $24.95), Catherine Saxelby agrees. “A healthy diet is a must if you It seems organic is the way to go as many moisturisers now contain organic ingredients. “Scientific and medical research has shown that 10 OPTIONS - FRESH IDEAS FOR HEALTHY LIVING an estimated 8-10,000 toxins are potentially absorbed through the skin from commercial cosmetic and skin care products,” says Mukti Lloyd, director of organic skin care company, Mukti Botanicals. Mukti Aloe Vera Moisturiser is made from all-natural products, contains no chemicals, is absorbed quickly and rejuvenates all skin types. Feeling Fruity Luscious fruit masques will leave your skin soft and luminous and are easy to make. Pineapple Pizzazz 1 cup fresh pineapple ½ cup fresh paw paw (slightly green) 2 tablespoons honey Puree pineapple and paw paw in a food processor blender. Add honey and mix thoroughly. Spread mixture over clean face, avoiding eye area. Leave on for no longer than five minutes (less for sensitive skin) and then rinse with cool water. Strawberry Sensation 2 ½ tablespoons ground oats or oat bran 3 large ripe strawberries 1 tablespoon plain yoghurt. Combine oats, strawberries and yoghurt and mix to a smooth paste. Apply to a clean face, avoiding eye area. Leave for 10 minutes and then rinse off with warm water. For a quick and effective every day moisturizer, spritz entire face with extra virgin olive oil. Laugh a Lot A good old chuckle is also an excellent way to maintain your youthful looks. “Fifteen minutes of laughter each day stimulates the blood supply to the face, and the oxygenation of the body from a good laugh helps nourish the skin and reduces that tired look. The facial muscles also get a great tone up with laughter,” says Director of Authentic Happiness Australia and Certified Laughter Therapist, Susan Welch. “Exercise of the mouth, cheek and the eye muscles in full laughter helps lift the serotonin levels in the brain, which makes us feel and look happier. Finally, by squeezing the tear glands in laughter, the eyes are moistened and sparkle is added. Combine all these, and laughter is an instant facelift.” November/ December 2004 7 SKIN SAVERS For a flawless compl e x i o n a l l year long, it’s impor t a n t t o . . . 1. Engage in Exercise It improves blood circulation, elasticity, strength and firmness of the skin. Sweating also rids the body of toxins that can escalate the normal process of ageing. 2. Drink Sensibly Limit alcohol to only one or two glasses a day with some alcohol-free days as alcohol dehydrates as well as depleting the body of vitamin B1 and folate. 3. Cut Caffeine Caffeine can dehydrate the skin leaving it dull and wrinkly so keep coffee, cola drinks and chocolate to a minimum. 4. Quench Your Thirst Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated – at least eight glasses (two litres) a day, and even more in summer. 5. Sleep On It Lack of sleep can cause stress, which tightens blood capillaries, affecting the flow of nutrients to the skin. This causes your skin to look dull. 6. Butt Out Smoking is another major contributor to wrinkles. “The latest Japanese research shows that nicotine causes up to a 40% drop in collagen production and that by age 40, a lifetime habitual smoker has the skin texture of a 55-year-old,” says Mukti. 7. Stay Out Of The Sun Experts agree that sun exposure is one of the main culprits when it comes to premature wrinkles. Wear sunscreen every day, even in winter, by using a moisturiser and foundation with added sunscreen.
