May 2016 Kwik Cricket Success Well done to all the children who recently took part in the North West Leicestershire Kwik Cricket Competitions. The girls team played very well in what was the first time many of them had played a competitive game. The Mixed team won two out of three games and only narrowly missed out on progressing to the semi finals. A very enjoyable afternoons cricket, which was very well supported by parent spectators. Kasper Schmeichel Signed Gloves Kasper Schmeichel, Leicester City and Denmark goalkeeper, has very kindly donated a signed pair of his gloves towards our SPACE Charity. These are available to win by entering our competition. To enter a bid costs £2 and the winner is the person who places the lowest unique bid over £10. (Bids must be rounded to the nearest 20p, for example the lowest bid could be £10.20p or a higher bid could be £12.80p) For full details of how to enter, to be in with a chance of winning the gloves, please visit our website or speak to Mrs Wight in the school office after half term. Best of luck. Bikes and Trikes Our children in Oak Class love playing with our bikes and trikes, but we could always do with more. Before we invest in more, we would be grateful if anyone has any old bikes and trikes they could donate to school. They need to be appropriate for children aged 4 and 5 and fairly robust! Many thanks. Please Note All children return to school after the summer holidays on Tuesday 30th August An electronic copy of this newsletter and all letters home are available on our school website www.swann.leics.sch.uk May 2016 Dear Parents and Carers, Our SPACE Day really encapsulated everything our school is about, happy children successful learners. The day ensured the children had a enjoyable day, but one which was full of learning through investigation and practical activities. The morning and the evening involved everyone coming together to enjoy the very best of our school community, an event which would not have been possible without everyone pulling together, which we do so well. I would like to wish every an enjoyable and restful half term. Yours sincerely, Mr Mawdsley Headteacher SPACE Many thanks to all our parents, staff and friends of the school for all your contributions to a wonderful day on SPACE Day. The official launch of our fundraising campaign and the design of our new building was a tremendous success. So far the day has raised an amazing £1,151.87 towards our new classroom. All the children had great fun and learned a lot about space. I was delighted to see so many parents and members of the community join us for breakfast and how wonderful to be able to go to your local primary school for a curry! Many thanks to Chilli and Spice for supporting us with the food for the evening and A Holmes and Sons butchers in Coalville for providing the sausages for the BBQ in the morning. A wonderful community event all round. For more photos and a video of the day please visit our website. May 2016 Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations WWII Shelter at Swannington The children in Chestnut Class have been learning all about life during World War II. This has been brought to life this week for the children in Year 3. They have been working hard with Mr Cairns and Mrs Huckerby to build their very own Anderson Shelter. They have thoroughly enjoyed designing, digging and building their shelter, complete with corrugated iron roof. They made history come alive by recreating an air raid and going down into the safety of the shelter. Well done to all the children involved. Sycamore Explore The Sikh Religion Sycamore have been learning about Sikhism as part of their Religious Education lessons. Karter Singh from the St Phillip's Centre in Leicester, delivered a workshop and brought various items for the children to see and hear. They had a wonderful time learning about another religion and sharing their knowledge of Sikhism. May 2016 This year’s celebrations for the Queen’s Birthday will involve a very special day on Thursday 9th June. Children are invited to come to school dressed in red white and blue (no charge). They will have the chance to have a special picnic lunch and all children will have their lunch on the ball court. See our website for full details. Street Parade Thurs 9th June from 1.45 pm From 1.45 pm the children will be walking through Swannington and we would welcome parents to come out and see the children parade. More details to follow after half term. In the afternoon, all children will be having afternoon tea sitting on their specially decorated chairs on the ball court. Summer Fayre This years’ summer fayre on Sat 11th June will continue the celebrations with themed events celebrating the 90th Birthday. Robin Hood This summer’s school production involves all our children in the adventures of Robin Hood. This musical comedy features Robin and his Merry Men and Maid Marion in adventures with the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. We very much hope you are able to join us for what will be two nights of great fun and entertainment on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th July. Further details to follow after half term. Oak Class Visit Swannington Church The children in Oak Class are learning all about places of worship. Reverend Neil kindly showed the children all round the church, where they identified the key features of a church. The visit included a Baptism, Holy Communion and a Wedding all in the space of 45 minutes. There was even time to visit the new born lambs at Mrs Smith’s house on the way home. Djembe Concert The children in Chestnut and Oak Class have thoroughly enjoyed learning how to play the Djembe drums this term with Miss Taylor. They are looking forward to sharing what they have learned with parents on Tues the 28th June from 2.30 pm. We very much hope you are able to join us for this exclusive concert.
