campfire around the (248) 647-1100 1 WINTER • • • • 2009 Experience camp life Friendships Memories Enriching Jewish identity tamarackcamps.com President’s Message I chuckled each time I saw a commercial that ran this past summer. The ad, promoting an outdoor outfitting company, featured scenes around a campfire, starry nights, vast and beautiful hiking trails, and people fullyengaged with each other and the outdoors. The tagline of the commercial was that the company, in promoting camping, was “the original social networking site.” How clever! The marketing arm of the company really “got“ the essence of camping and the way in which true social networking is very different from that which we do on a computer. Camping is all about building lasting relationships. The most basic and the most important relationships are those between people. At Tamarack Camps, those relationships become the basis for ad hoc communities. In my position as President, I have had the pleasure of meeting camp alumni of all ages. I am always delighted when I learn not only a name, but also the “Tamarack pedigree”: “She was my Tripper”; “I was his T.S.S.”; “Her brother was my counselor” or “He was my camper.” No matter the age, the memories of those that mentored, and those that were nurtured, are still on the tip of the tongue. At Tamarack Camps our campers and staff also have the opportunity to build personal relationships with their Judaism. We come from all levels of observance, and many different synagogue affiliations (and sometimes non-affiliation), yet we are able to find commonality in our shared Judaism, build upon and revel in that common denominator. Together we observe Kashrut, engage in creative Jewish programming and celebrate Shabbat. Additionally, we bring Israeli children to camp each session along with our partner, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. This program, unique among Jewish camps, allows our Israeli and American campers to truly experience each other’s culture and form lasting friendships. Camping affords the opportunity to spend unstructured time outdoors and away from computer screens, TV, video games and cell phones. It is remarkable that in 2009 – 107 years after Ida Koppel and Blanche Hart the established the Fresh Air Society – we still need to get our children away from the day to day and into the fresh air at camp. It is the mission of those founding mothers of the Fresh Air Society that continues to drive all that we do on the board. That mission prompted our recent board decision to keep fees flat for the 2010 camping season. In doing so, the board hopes to provide assistance, not only to those who qualify for financial aid, but also to families which may not qualify for scholarship, but are nonetheless struggling. It is that mission that our board members will be promoting when they call you to ask for your continued support. Please help us continue sending children to camp so that they may continue to build lasting relationships with the environment, with Judaism and with each other. (248) 647-1100 2 tamarackcamps.com Executive Director’s Message As I write this, I’m sitting on an airplane, and all I can think about is pride. I’m returning from Massachusetts, having just attended a conference sponsored by the Grinspoon Institute for Jewish Philanthropy. The conference, which included 250 camp professionals and lay leaders from 70 Jewish camps around the country, focused on fundraising, board development, financial aid and, of course, the profound impact a Jewish camp experience has on the identities of young people. While the Grinspoon Institute has presented annual conferences over the past seven or eight years, it was clear to me that this year was different. The summer of 2009 presented a series of challenges (economic downturns, swine flu, etc.), inconsistent with a typical summer and we were eager to learn how each other had weathered the storm. I was joined by Lee Trepeck, our camp director, Deena Lockman, our development director and two Board members, Elizabeth Sollish and Frank Ellias. We were one of the larger contingents, and we attended various sessions, determined to listen, learn, ask and return with what we hoped would be a laundry list of best practices. Now, nearly 48 hours later, we return to Michigan with not just plenty of notes, but also an abundance of pride. Session after session, the five of us – sometimes together, but more often separately – heard first-hand accounts from our colleagues of the challenges and struggles they have faced over the last few years relating to fundraising, disappointing board participation and lack of successful structure within their camps and agencies. Not only did I have difficulty relating to their woes, I found myself energized by the recent successes of our agency and community. While many attendees assumed that we would arrive at the conference depressed and withdrawn because of our more challenging predicament – otherwise known as Michigan’s economy – they were shocked to learn of the truth. Three points, among many, that continued to repeat themselves throughout the conference were: (1) In 2009, Tamarack Camps allocated more financial aid to help send children to camp than any other Jewish camp in the world; (2) Our agency had recently experienced tremendous growth relating to board member recruitment, training, participation, governance, committee structure and management; and (3) The swine flu cases at Camp Maas in 2009 were nearly the lowest of any camp represented, serving as a testament to our incredibly talented Health Director, Roberta Blumberg, and the dedicated doctors, nurses and clinic assistants of our clinic and Medical Committee, who demonstrated their effectiveness by preparing our camp community for a safe and healthy summer. I truly believe that it takes a community to raise a summer camp – not one family, not one synagogue nor even one city. It takes selfless board members, always ready to devote their time, advice and financial resources. It takes skilled professionals, capable of working countless hours and consistently going the extra mile to deliver impactful experiences. It takes a strong Federation, committed to the significance of a Jewish camp experience, especially for those who otherwise would not be able to attend. And it takes hundreds of donors, who give to our various campaigns, providing momentum to enhance our facilities, programs and staff. As I exited the conference center, there he was, Harold Grinspoon, by himself, enjoying a quiet moment. An overwhelming sense of gratitude consumed me as I approached him. Standing before me was a man who had already single-handedly changed the face of Jewish camping in just over five years – contributing millions of dollars to camps all over the country, providing them with mentors for guidance in board development, strategic planning and fundraising. “Harold, it’s truly incredible what you’re doing for children, families and camps all over the country. On behalf of just one camp, thank you so very much,” I said. “Have you ever stopped and realized how much of a difference you’re making?” Harold looked at me, took a second, and then responded. “There’s a lot more to do,” he answered with a determined look in his eyes. “There are still Jewish children unable to attend camp and many camps in need of improvements. We need to do a lot more.” Instantly, my focus was redirected. We need to do a lot more. The plane is about to land and I still have a great sense of pride. But I also have a refreshed sense of focus. Our mission continues – more children, more improvements, more excellence, more impact – more pride. Jonah Geller Executive Director (248) 647-1100 3 tamarackcamps.com The Real World Nearing the conclusion of this summer, when the reality of separation becomes increasingly visible, I can recall a significant theme, expressed by many campers and staff members: it is difficult to leave camp and return to the “real world.” Yet, today, months removed from the summer sun, it strikes me: camp is the real world. Within the daily structure of camp, the “real world” is reflected through significant channels: the value of community, a need for a break from the grind, and the importance of educational opportunities. At camp, we are the essence of community. In 2009, we attracted people from 14 countries around the world and 18 states throughout our country, mixed together on common ground for 10 weeks. At camp, we eat together. We participate together. We live together. Like a community, our villages mirror various neighborhoods, where different lifestyles connect, creating common bonds. And our bunks become homes – a place to hang out with friends, tell stories, and laugh. We grow to rely upon each other, establishing trust. Special relationships are born, which last forever. Again, the epitome of community. Also, just like the “real world,” where people need an occasional break, camp is an escape from the usual, daily grind. There are periods of freedom and relaxation scheduled along the course of every session, which includes a time to play and a space for a child’s sensible and boundless release of energy. Finally, in many different respects, camp is really a giant playground, where informal educational opportunities abound. Daily, we are teaching campers – emphasizing positive social interaction and constantly encouraging them to seize productive activities, stretching beyond the boundaries of their original comfort zones. Camp is a place to experience a Jewish education, skillfully wrapped within programs like horseback riding, arts and crafts, water skiing, tennis, ropes, basketball, softball – just to name a few. We teach the joy of outdoor living, maximizing the thrill of a village trip, where campers gain knowledge of canoeing, hiking, and cooking around a campfire. Also, for staff members and professionals, camp continues to exercise our minds. Creatively, we aspire to pique a camper’s interest, tirelessly working to produce and promote dynamic, educational programs. And, similar to life in the “real world,” we must intelligently confront obstacles, recognizing that, even during a fun experience, challenges can exist. Unquestionably, at camp, education is prevalent, ongoing, and important. At Camp Maas, where campers, staff members and professionals live in a safe, controlled, exciting, stimulating, challenging, rewarding, and positive environment, we are proud to represent community, respite and education – a microcosm of the “real world.” Lee Trepeck Director, Camp Maas WE NEED YOU Save the date! The banquet is attended by the many individuals who help deliver our summer program (bus drivers, maintenance staff, office staff, clinic staff, kitchen staff, counselors, specialists, supervisors, senior staff and TSS/Hadracha participants). Additionally, our board members participate in the festivities, assisting with the evening’s set-up, food prep and serving of dinner. The evening is one of the summer’s highlights…and not just because of the meal! The Chadar Ochel (Dining Hall) is transformed with decorations, where a camping theme dominates the walls, ceilings and tables. We enjoy a fabulous staff slide show, speeches of gratitude and appreciation, and, of course, the distribution of our summer awards. All of our staff members work hard throughout the summer, and their rewards are numerous. However, we also take advantage of the opportunity to recognize those individuals who put forth extraordinary effort. As our campers learn throughout the summer, Jewish history is full of miracles. The Hanukkah story is all about miracles. Miracles surround us today as well, we only have to open our eyes to become aware of them. Hanukkah is the only major Jewish holiday rooted in history rather than in the Torah. Hanukkah literally means dedication. When we affix a mezuzah to the doorpost of a home for the first time, it is called a Hanukkat Habayit (a dedication of the house). As our camp’s rabbi, this is a ceremony I have conducted often throughout the summer. When the Chadar Ochel (dining hall) was renovated, we dedicated it by affixing mezuzot to the entrance doors. This past summer, we celebrated the refurnished Butzel Conference Center with new mezuzot on all the doors as well. More than a way of spiritually protecting our homes and buildings, the mezuzah is a signpost informing all who enter that there is Jewish activity within. The story of Hanukkah is also about the struggle to remain Jewish in a growing secular society. King Antiochus decreed that all people under his rule, including the Jews, must Hellenize (adopt the culture of the Greeks). At our camp, we are proud to celebrate our Jewish heritage and beliefs. We maintain core Jewish practices, like observing Shabbat and eating kosher food, as well as displaying our love for Israel. Unlike our ancestors under the Greek ruler of Syria, we are not coerced to renounce our Jewish beliefs and values in place of secularism. Rather, we choose to embrace secular society in addition to our religious convictions. At camp this often means bridging the Jewish and the secular. For example, this past summer our campers put on the musical “Shrek,” but at the end of the performance Shrek and Fiona were married in a Jewish ceremony by a rabbi, where I appeared as the rabbi (talk about typecasting). When I think of Hanukkah, I also make the comparison between the sukkah and our experience at camp. Why on Hanukkah do I think of the sukkah, the temporary hut in which we eat during the Jewish festival of Sukkot? In the Hanukkah story, when the Maccabees were fighting the Greek army, they missed the celebration of Sukkot. So, when they defeated the Greeks and rededicated the Temple, they celebrated joyfully for eight days just as they would have on Sukkot. The sukkah is a temporary dwelling place. By law, it should not be a permanent edifice. When I think of sitting in the sukkah, eating delicious meals with family and friends, and enjoying our time together, my thoughts quickly shift to camp. Like the sukkah, camp is a temporary experience. As fun as it is, we know it will not last throughout the year. That is one of the ways that camp is so special and magical. In the Talmud, the rabbis do not have much to say about the miraculous defeat of Greeks by the Maccabees. Rather, the Hanukkah focus in the Talmud is about the sanctification and rededication of the Temple. This is also where we learn about the miracle of the oil. While there was only enough oil to keep the menorah lit for one day, the little bit of oil actually burned for eight days. The next year would be the first Hanukkah celebration with songs and praises. Camp is full of miracles. From the lighting of the Israeli scouts’ fire sign on the first night of camp to the lighting of the menorah at the Zaks Amphitheatre on the final night, there are miraculous experiences all summer. Our Horizons/Avodah program is a miracle. The way campers overcome their fear on the ropes course is a miracle. The interaction between our Israeli and American campers and staff is a miracle. Hundreds of campers celebrating their Jewish pride is a miracle. As we celebrate Hanukkah with our families, let us also reflect upon the joys of our camp – a miracle for which we should all be grateful. Beginning in 1960, the first travel trip departed with 12 campers and three counselors in two green station wagons and a trailer truck. Fifty years later, our trips have evolved, traveling out west with 25 campers and six counselors on a chartered coach bus. Through 50 years of growth, while much has changed, even more has remained the same. The focus of the programs has never waivered: Jewish community, friendships, Shabbat and havdallah ceremonies, rustic wilderness experiences, pushing the limits and comfort zones of the campers and FUN. Between the mix of adventure, fun and community, we instill in our travel trip campers Jewish values, teaching life-long lessons along the way. We are not only preparing them to be our future staff members, but more importantly, we are preparing them to be our community’s future Jewish leaders. Jason Charnas Director of Teen and Family Programs Agree Outpost Camp For me, crashing headfirst through foaming, curved waves unlocks my gates to freedom... Now, I am nothing but myself. – Dylan Welch, 2009 Agree Camper The above passage was left in the Agree 2009 Journal and will forever be a statement of the incredible power of a summer at Agree Outpost Camp. Deep in the Canadian Wilderness, we are free to look inward and realize our incredible potential to canoe through raging rapids, summit peaks along Lake Superior and become amazing, engaging leaders. As we begin taking our winter clothes out of storage, I want to encourage all of you to look forward to the summer of 2010 and get excited and energized about the magic of Agree. This upcoming summer promises to be an amazing adventure. We will travel up and down the eastern coast of Lake Superior, rock hopping along the crystal water, canoeing through inland lakes and rock climbing awe-inspiring cliffs. We will work cooperatively, cooking, cleaning and caring for each other and celebrate our community with spirited song sessions around our campfire under the northern lights. I want to wish you all warmth and peace through the (248) 647-1100 winter and encourage all campers entering 9th grade to register for adventure in 2010 – take the road less traveled to Agree Outpost Camp! Sincerely, Amit Weitzer, Director, Agree Outpost Camp 8 tamarackcamps.com Camp Kennedy This past summer, we sat with our Agree brothers and sisters in Kennedy’s lodge during what has become a yearly joining of forces, a celebration of old and new friendships, and a remembrance of shared moments. Two musicians taught us a protest song from the stage of the fireplace: “…like a tree that’s standing by the water, we shall not be moved.” Maybe it was the people in the room, or the sound of our voices echoing off of old pictures and older walls, but the phrase “we shall not be moved” became a source of solidarity for Kennedy ’09. From then on, those words followed us up the trail, drove with us across the U.P., and put up a wall when we arrived at Adat Shalom the last day of camp. “Ok all, time to get off the bus.” “WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED!” Every summer, there will be an “aha,” and every summer, it seems like that moment happens sooner and with more force. I am so lucky to be a witness to that experience, so proud to know the campers who have made Camp what it is in my experience, and so excited to welcome the campers of 2010 to next summer’s Kennedy. Every summer, there is an “aha!” moment when Kennedy campers realize that camp is theirs. The moment is usually accompanied by some sort of phrase that exemplifies the essence of our purpose. In years past, “no parents” has been a big one. It signifies the obvious – that there are no parents around – but beyond that, it is a kind of deep breath and big stretch – we are on our own, a bunch of youngsters in the woods with no purpose but to expand our minds and experiences. We approach everything with gusto because we’re it, we’re all we’ve got, and by golly, we’re going to make it good. To next summer! You can do this without taking the distribution into your income, which can significantly reduce your Federal and State income tax bill for 2009. Don’t wait until year-end – simply direct your IRA administrator to transfer your required annual distribution, or any amount up to $100,000, directly to Tamarack to make a donation to this year’s campaign or to create a Scholarship Endowment Fund which will provide an annual gift to the Send a Kid to Tamarack campaign in your family’s name in perpetuity. The time is now. This benefit is only available until December 31, 2009. Please call Deena Lockman (248) 355-6830 or Jonathan Lowe (248) 203-1490 today for answers to any questions you might have, and to assist you with making an IRA gift in 2009. CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES Are you tired of earning less than 1% on your savings accounts? Would you like to learn more about how you can increase your income by 400% or more – guaranteed – and enjoy a charitable deduction while providing for the future of our Detroit Jewish community? Sound too good to be true? Let us provide you with a no obligation personalized illustration of the benefits available to you through a Charitable Gift Annuity issued by the United Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit (UJF) to benefit Tamarack Camps. A Gift Annuity is a contract between you and the UJF which is a combination of a gift to charity and an annuity. In exchange for a transfer of cash or appreciated securities to UJF, you receive a guaranteed fixed stream of income for your lifetime and that of your spouse or another person, which reflects interest earned combined with a tax-free return of your principal. Your payment will stay the same each year, and will not fluctuate regardless of current investment or market conditions – like a bank CD, only better. When you establish your Gift Annuity, you will receive a charitable deduction for the ultimate gift to Tamarack Camps at the end of the annuity’s term. You receive an amazing income, a charitable deduction, current income and capital gains tax relief, and the comfort of knowing you are leaving our Detroit Jewish community stronger and more financially secure. How much better does it get? Please call Jonathan Lowe at (248) 203-1490 or Susie Feldman at (248) 203-1461 for a confidential no-obligation consultation and a customized illustration reflecting your own specific situation. You will be amazed with the results! (248) 647-1100 14 tamarackcamps.com A l umn i F am i l y F un D ay Thank you for attending Alumni Family Fun Day 2009! Special thanks to all of our sponsors! The program, which begins and ends with a Camp Maas residential camping experience, includes experiential exercises that teach environmental and team building skills. Did You Know? The Jewish Women’s Foundation granted Tamarack Camps $20,000 to help single Jewish mothers send their children to camp? Camp Maas finished the first summer of a three-year program, funded by the Jewish Fund, to study, improve and expand its Horizons/Avodah program for special needs individuals? The Sinai Guild continues to support the Wally F. Straus Clinic by purchasing medications and supplies to keep our entire Tamarack community healthy? Lee Henkin has been connected to Tamarack Camps her entire life. As a child, Lee was a scholarship camper and has spent her adult life giving back. Lee began volunteering as a nurse in the Fresh Air Camp clinic in 1949, and has been supporting Tamarack Camps’ health efforts ever since. She is always smiling, cheerful and ready to lend a hand. Tamarack Camps is proud to honor her as a Shalom Street “Mitzvah Model.” Our TSS/Hadracha campers participated in Summer in the City as a result of funding from the Schulman Millennium Fund. All TSS/Hadracha campers spent 2 days volunteering in Detroit? For the third year, our Send a Kid to Tamarack campaign has benefitted from the Summer Dreams Program of the Detroit Free Press Charities and the Skillman Foundation? The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit allocated more than $900,000 to support Tamarack Camps in 2009? Jonah Geller, Executive Director, and Shelley Hutton, President, presented Susie Zaks with the “Heart of Tamarack Award,” which ackowledged her decades of service with Tamarack Camps. Grinspoon Reach Your Match 2 Donations of $3,600 or more, paid over three years, will be matched by the Grinspoon Institute for Jewish Philanthropy, the Jewish Fund, and the Henrietta and Herbert S. Charfoos Fund. For more information about how to donate, contact Deena Lockman, Director of Development, at (248) 355-6830 or lockman@tamarackcamps.com. (248) 647-1100 16 Board Member Arik Green received the President’s Award, which recognized his tremendous assistance designing and renovating the Butzel Conference Center and Camp Maas dining hall. tamarackcamps.com We Honor our 2009 Donors (November 1, 2008 - October 31, 2009) who help us fulfill our mission of providing enriching, Jewish camping experiences for children and families, independent of financial ability, building a vibrant community.
