Dear New Student,
You are about to begin 4 (or more) of the most fun and exciting years
of your life! Oh, and some school will be thrown in there too. Coming to a
new city can be quite overwhelming, but with great education comes great
responsibility. If you still have questions about how things work around
here, this is the book for you. Included in here are helpful tips and tricks from
seasoned college veterans that will help ease your transition into college.
My name is Neil Marshall, and I am going to be a sophomore this year
studying Actuarial Science. With one full year of college behind me, there are
many things that I have learned.
The first thing I learned is to not be worried about talking to new people
and potentially having an awkward conversation. I have had my fair share
of those moments but with the big campus here at UW-Madison, you most
likely will never see those people again.
The second thing I have learned is to not be afraid to share my faith and
beliefs with others. Hide it under a bushel? No! I’m going to let it shine. You
will be surprised with the number of people who are also Christian, even on
a largely secular campus such as Madison. Also, if they are not Christian, you
have just opened a door for them to ask questions about what you believe
and that is a perfect opportunity for you to share Jesus’ love.
Finally, remember to read the most important textbook of all— your
Bible. Think about life as the most important test you will have. Also, just like
in class, you will have many small pop quizzes thrown at you. You never know
when these challenges will come up, so you need to be prepared. Your Bible
has all the answers you need, but it is up to you to find them. Come to the
Chapel often and meet people who you can study with for life’s pop quizzes.
Join a Small Group Bible Study (I’d love to have you join mine!), be a regular
at Wednesday night Vespers and grab a bite at the Triple Dollar Dinner on
Mondays.
God’s Blessings on your first year at Madison!
I hope to see you around Chapel!
