For a guide to historic sites in Fauquier County, please call (800) 820-1021, or visit www.VisitFauquier.com A genealogical resource center focusing on Fauquier County. Fauquier County was the birthplace of Chief Justice John Marshall, 4th Chief Justice of the U.S. (1801-1835), who helped shape American constitutional law. Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail 10 Ashby Street, Warrenton 20186 • (540) 347-5525 www.fauquierhistory.com The Warren Green Hotel (now the Warren Green Building) was originally built on the site of the Norris Tavern in 1819. In 1825, General Lafayette was given a banquet here and addressed a crowd of 6,000, including James Monroe, Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay, who later declared his run for presidency here. In 1862, General George McClellan bade farewell to his troops after being relieved of command of the Army of the Potomac. The hotel burned and was rebuilt in 1876. The new structure hosted President Theodore Roosevelt, and was the residence of Wallis Warfield Simpson who spent a year here in 1927 while awaiting her first divorce so she could marry the man who would abdicate the throne of England, King Edward VIII, to become the Duke & Duchess of Windsor. One of Virginia’s most perfectly preserved jails from the early 1800’s. The jail buildings now feature displays concerning history of both the jails and Fauquier County as a whole. The footprints of Confederate and Union soldiers can still be found throughout Fauquier County. Many battles and skirmishes were fought throughout Fauquier, its towns and countryside frequently occupied by Union and Confederate troops. Brentmoor (Spilman–Mosby House) 173 Main Street, Warrenton 20186 After the second Battle of Manassas, which took place just 6 miles from Fauquier County, over 1,800 wounded soldiers were brought to makeshift hospitals in Warrenton’s businesses, churches and homes. Around 650 casualties of the Civil War, were laid to rest in the Warrenton Cemetery. Fauquier boasts over 16 Civil War Trail sites, many registered historic districts, numerous historic buildings & sites, and several museums. On the National Register of Historic Places, this home was built between 1859 and 1861 by Edward Spilman, a well-known local attorney and judge. By 1866, the Confederate “Gray Ghost”, John S. Mosby, had moved into the home with his family while pursuing his law practice in Warrenton. Following the War, Confederate Colonel John S. Mosby made his home in the Town of Warrenton where he practiced law for a time prior to becoming the American Consul to Hong Kong. Mosby is also buried in the Warrenton Cemetery. ry Museum at Fauquier Histo Monroe Park Gold Mining Museum 14421 Gold Dust Parkway, off Rte. 17, Goldvein 22720 (540) 752-5330 • www.goldvein.com Request/download the following history-related brochures by calling (800) 820-1021, or visit: www.VisitFauquier.com • The Old Town Warrenton brochure includes a historic walking tour of the Old Town area. • The Fauquier County Civil War Heritage brochure includes the Civil War history of Fauquier, and three historic driving tours of the County.
