• Cart
• Dumpster/Roll off
Placement
• Next to garbage cans
• Not in food areas
• Do not overpopulate
– More recycling containers
does not necessarily led to
more recycling!
Collection Methods
• Have operational
support
• Garbage collection for
contaminated recycling
• Truck that can fit within
the event space
• A well branded truck
• Tonnage reports
– Make sure truck is empty
– Secure keys after event
Signage
• Recycling Guidelines
• Directional Signage
Dedicated Staff
• Staff needs to be
versatile and willing to
work all event
functions.
Communication with Event Planners
• What waste items will the event and vendors
be producing?
• What will the recycling role be at the event?
• Will there be a dedicated food area?
• Will there be separate vendor cardboard
collection?
• Will they be requiring a
tonnage report?
After action meeting
• Bring everyone together!!!
– COT staff meeting
– COT staff and Event staff meeting
• Talk about what went right
• Talk about what can we improve on
Lessons Learned
• Determine what you want
to recycle
– Commingled recycling is
not viable at all events
• COT Focus is on:
– Cardboard
– Bottles
– Cans
• Glass is not allowed at
COT events
– except behind the
counter/hidden from
public
Lessons Learned
• Some events are just not an appropriate
venue for recycling or recycling education
– Music
– Alcohol
– Food
• Always have a plan
for the Weather
Lessons Learned
• Everyone has a good time…
