Annual Report - Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana
Join Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana in ending shelter overpopulation. Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana YEAR IN REVIEW 2014 Released May 2015 Dear SNSI Friends, It is a pleasure to share with you highlights of the progress that Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana (SNSI) made in 2014, working toward our mission of ending the euthanasia of healthy and treatable cats and dogs by focusing on spaying and neutering to prevent the birth of unwanted animals. SNSI is dedicated to the animals in our state, seeking to ensure they can be cared for as each of us would love and care for our own pets. As with anything, an excessive number of animals is a recipe for disaster, with animals being euthanized at shelters across the state, because there are too many animals and not enough homes. But, SNSI is working to change the landscape in Indiana. By spaying and neutering, we can reduce the numbers to meet the demand for companion animals. When supply and demand meet, all animals can be adopted into permanent, loving homes. This is the day we are working toward. This has been a year of tremendous growth and vital results, thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, partner veterinarians, and our partnerships with other animal welfare organizations who share our mission. SNSI facilitated a record number of surgeries, launched and expanded programs, opened our first office and hired our first staff person in order to keep up with an ever-expanding workload. Still, we remain a predominantly volunteer organization, focusing our resources on animals. Demand for our services has continued to outpace our budget, so increasing our funding is a top priority for 2015. In the meantime, let’s take the opportunity to celebrate the successes of 2014. Sincerely, Cheri Storms President, Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana, Inc. Spay/neuter requires an upfront investment, and that initial investment reduces the amount of money spent on euthanasia and future dollars spent on capture, care and killing of healthy dogs and cats. In model states across the country, proven approaches to spay/neuter are resulting in dramatic reductions in euthanasia. These states have implemented comprehensive programs with reliable funding sources. New Hampshire witnessed a 75% decrease in euthanasia rates, and New Jersey realized a 61% decrease in rates after implementing strategic and comprehensive programs. Connecticut also realized a huge decrease in intakes for more than a seventeen-year period when they focused on spay/neuter services, cutting unnecessary euthanasia by 63%. ] ] When a Lafayette shelter received unlimited surgery certificate from SNSI, they experienced a 29% decrease in euthanasia. But when budget constraint no longer afforded Lafayette with as many surgery certificates as they needed, the decline in euthanasia numbers leveled off, stagnating their progress. Network of Vets SNSI continues to expand its network of veterinarians across the state to assist with low-cost spay/neuter surgeries. These shared-mission vets represent almost every corner of the state, and provide a convenient place for limited-income pet owners and animal advocates to access low-cost surgery options. Vets who participate in SNSI’s programs are a special and caring breed that recognize that providing these services means less suffering for Hoosier animals. PAGE 4 More Than 150 Partner Partnership Organizations SNSI is not a shelter or rescue group. SNSI is an organization that provides direct support to more than 150 non-profit groups and municipal shelters across Indiana. These groups frequently have too many animals and too little funding. They spend the vast majority of their funds on caring for animals, especially those who may be sick or injured. The free surgery certificates from SNSI provide a bit of financial relief to these hard-working animal welfare groups. Organizations Financial Partners SNSI couldn’t do our important work without the many individual and business donors who give generously of their time and in-kind donations. Two very special family foundations propelled SNSI forward with financial assistance in 2014: ● Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust – provided $70,000 for surgeries, marketing, staffing and capacity development. ● Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust – provided $23,000 for marketing programs and staffing assistance. SNSI Grows in 2014 Since 1977, SNSI has been promoting spay/neuter to reduce shelter overpopulation. In those 38 years of doing good for Indiana’s animals, SNSI has operated all of its programming with generous and caring volunteers. In 2014, SNSI made significant steps forward by adding its first-ever full-time staff person to coordinate all of its efforts. By adding staff, SNSI has increased its capacity to provide more programs and services and operate more efficiently. For a small non-profit organization like SNSI, volunteers continue to be its backbone. Community Cat Program Pet Friendly Group Grant Quick Fix SNAP Vet SNAP Assist In addition, SNSI was able to open its first-ever office, located in the Indiana Interchurch Center in Indianapolis. Neighbor to many other non-profits, SNSI can operate more effectively. Having a place to call home benefits not just the staff, but also the many SNSI volunteers and supporters. SNSI is grateful to all those who donated time, talent or money, or who purchased a Pet Friendly license plate. PAGE 5 ] What is a Community Cat? An outdoor cat that has been fixed, vaccinated and eartipped. They are unowned stray and feral (unsocialized) cats that are cared for by one or more colony caretakers. SNSI Programs Overview Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) – Provided 6,255 limited-income pet owners with $20 surgeries. Pet-friendly Group Grant – Rescue groups and municipal shelters all across the state are eligible for 10 free surgery certificates. SNSI issued 1,546 certificates in 2014. Community Cats – SNSI issued 30 free spay/neuter surgery certificates to groups fixing feral and free roaming cats, totaling 435 surgeries in 2014. ] SNSI Special Program – SNSI assists to fill funding gaps in unique circumstances where services are lacking and animals are particularly vulnerable. One example of a Special Program Grant recipient is Indiana CanINE Express Transport Project, a dog transport program that brings animals from areas of the state with few low-cost spay-neuter options to clinics that can provide those surgeries. February and October Campaigns – During two months of the year, many of SNSI’s participating veterinarians discount their fees to offer low-cost spay/neuter surgeries to all Hoosiers. This program is especially helpful to pet owners in need, but that do not qualify for SNSI’s financial-based program. A complete list of all 2014 SNSI assistance recipients is located on page 11 of this report. What SNSI Does SNSI Outreach and Education Through five unique and targeted programs, SNSI works with a diverse group of non-profit organizations and families across the state to ensure access to affordable spay/neuter surgery options. Help Us Help Them Donate Money With your help, SNSI is making significant strides in Indiana. SNSI stretches each dollar to provide maximum services and benefits to animals across the state. All donations to SNSI help save lives, reduce shelter overpopulation, and are tax deductible. Consider a donation today! How Many Lives Can Be Saved? SNSI is also working to educate Hoosiers about the importance of spay/neutering pets to reduce unwanted animals and shelter overpopulation. SNSI attends several events to reach out to individuals about the organization’s services. In 2014, SNSI created an educational brochure, updated our website, and attended tabling events, including: ● Indianapolis Mega-Adoption Event ● Pet Sitters International Conference ● Indiana Veterinary Medical Association Conference ● Great Indianapolis Pet Expo ● Earth Day Indiana Festival SNSI programs include: Pet Friendly Group Grant (PFGG) Provides free surgery certificates to non-profit animal groups and municipal shelters. Donate Time Help us staff a booth, organize an event, assist with a fundraiser (like our annual nut sale) or market our programs by being an SNSI volunteer. Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) Provides $20 surgeries to limited-income pet owners. SNSI Special Programs Fills funding gaps in unique circumstances, where services are lacking and animals are particularly vulnerable. Community Cat Program Provides groups that trap-neuter-return feral and free-roaming cats with free surgery certificates. February and October Campaigns During these two months, participating vets discount their services to encourage all Hoosiers to spay/neuter their pets. Collectively, these programs are reducing shelter overpopulation and saving animal lives. SNSI knows that this is the key to reducing, and someday eliminating, unnecessary euthanasia of healthy animals. This year promises to be one of continued growth and success. Demand for surgery certificates is higher than ever. To keep up with demand, SNSI is working to secure legislative funding, and will continue to market the Pet Friendly license plate in order to increase awareness and funding. There are many wonderful rescue groups, shelters and animal advocates throughout the state that are working to help animals. With limited resources of their own, they frequently look to SNSI for additional assistance. Our free and low-cost surgery certificates make a world of difference, and allow animal lovers from all walks of life to stretch their dollars and do more for the animals in their direct care. SNSI is truly honored to work in tandem with these outstanding advocates. We know that, by working together, we can prevent the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals. www.Facebook/ GetThemFixed Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana, Inc. 1100 W. 42nd St., Suite 205 Indianapolis, IN 46208 317-767-7771 Spay_Neuter_IN
