Dear Mayor
I am writing this letter the morning after the primary election. Unofficial
results at this time show Harry Oberg as the winner of the close race for
Mayor. Therefore, I am addressing the letter to Mayor-elect Oberg. First,
congratulations to you and all the candidates for running clean, positive
campaigns focused on the issues. It was refreshing!
As you know, there is much work to be done. Although you won’t
officially take office until November, I know that you will be making plans
and setting priorities sooner rather than later. I join with others in urging
you to start with a plan to resolve the $72 million obligation that Prescott
has for the pension system for public safety retirees. The sales tax plan
failed in yesterday’s election, so that means of paying back our obligation
is off the list of possible solutions.
Quite frankly, there are not a lot of options left. When City officials
met with our Board of Directors several months ago, the stark reality was
that there simply isn’t an “extra” $2 million or so to pay the FY16 PSPRS
obligation. Budget cuts will need to be made. I’m hopeful that you will
involve a broad, cross-section of the community in helping make these
recommendations and decisions. You personally opposed the ballot
question and obviously will play a key role in deciding how to resolve
this issue. But, I hope that you will also ask one or two representatives
from the groups that opposed the ballot question to be part of whatever
discussions take place. That may sound a bit odd coming from a group
that supported the question, but I mean it quite sincerely.
History has shown that tax issues are always controversial and invoke
considerable debate. Anti-tax groups scream “no new taxes’ and often
find support from citizens who say they are tired of taxes…period. When
a tax measure is defeated, those who opposed it have done their job, so to
speak, and move on to the next issue.
My point is this: if those who opposed the sales tax approach really
want to help, then they should be encouraged to be part of the ultimate
solution. By defeating the sales tax question yesterday, it didn’t make
the issue go away—it merely took an option off the table. The issue
remains. Appoint a group of citizens representing both sides of the PSPRS
issue and put them to work. We would be happy to have a Chamber
representative work with that group, too.
Best wishes to you Mr. Mayor-elect!
The Chamber stands ready to help whenever and wherever we can.

Connect
with the Chamber
Your Prescott Chamber membership enables
meaningful connection and the ability to build new working
relationships. Each month we offer members a number
of opportunities to gain more community visibility. The
monthly mixers are fertile ground to grow your network. The
mixers attract business owners, managers, and community
leaders. New members have the chance to speak and
introduce their organization to the group. Throughout the
month, smaller networking groups named the Prescott
Possibilities Group and Chamber Area Networking regularly
meet to build long term relationships. Your Chamber
membership enables you to connect with local businesses!
On August 19th the Chamber welcomed our latest
members with a new member mixer hosted at Cuppers
Coffee Bistro. Over 35 people attended for great coffee and
conversation. This new, quarterly event is another way the
Chamber connects and empowers our members!
Did you know the Chamber offers high visibility, low cost advertising? By advertising with the Chamber your organization
will reach consumers and businesses through our website, visitor center, newsletter, maps, and calendar of events. Space is
limited, don’t delay. Call Neal at 928-445-2000 ext. 116 to learn more. If you have any questions about advertising, getting
involved with the Chamber, email Neal@prescott.org or call today!

Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) was recently
recognized as one of Arizona’s highest ranked hospitals
by U. S. News & World Report in their 2015-16 Best
Hospitals’ report. The report rated YRMC as sixth highest
among Arizona’s 110 hospitals and second highest among
northern Arizona’s 24 hospitals. It was also rated as “High
Performing” for hip and knee replacements. Only 11% of
all U. S. hospitals performing hip replacement surgeries
earned this ranking. Similarly, only 10% of all U. S. hospitals
performing knee replacement surgery earned this ranking.
Congratulations YRMC!
Yavapai Humane Society has received a 2015 Top-Rated
Award by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user
reviews about non-profit organizations. The Top-Rated
award was based on the large number of positive reviews
that the Humane Society has received written by volunteers,
donors and customers. The Yavapai Humane Society has
been serving Yavapai County’s citizens and animals since
1972.
The City of Prescott Tourism Office is working with local

of commerce offices around Arizona. The 2016 Greater
Prescott Area Visitor’s Guide will feature Prescott, Prescott
Valley, Chino Valley and other surrounding communities.
Various ad and directory sizes are available starting at $125.
Reserve your ad space by September 30, 2015. Ad materials
are due October 31, 2015. The guide will be distributed
throughout 2016. To advertise, please contact Elaine Earle at
cfo@raxxdirect.com or at the toll free number (844) 729-9769.

ribbon-cuttings and assist at Chamber events such as the monthly mixers. If you are interested in being an Ambassador, call

them on state support of the military and their families. She is
a member the Greater Arizona Development Authority (GADA)
and serves as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Prescott
Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and is on the Board
of Directors of Trinity Christian School. Patt was recently
selected as a member of Prescott Area Leadership (PAL).
