Their use of props and poetry was phenomenal. I personally loved the performance because it was funny and they taught me how to write better poems. I would watch it many times over if I could. They taught us about the key steps: rhyme, rhythm and imagery. The story they presented was perfect. Mello Santillan Poetry in Action was very good. The actors were hilarious and the skit was extraordinary. They included the audience as if we were in the play. We learnt about how to write a poem on the spot and find out how to make them sound like they ‘role off the tongue’! In the end we all enjoyed it and it didn’t even matter if you didn’t like poetry! Memories, feelings, connections, good feelings, frustrations, all sorts of things. We have quite a large table in our eating area at home that has been with us for a decade and a half. On the wall above it, is an array of portraits of our children and family, each one showing the growth of the children and gradual (or not so gradual) aging of the adults. I love that there are pictures of our kids when they lost their teeth and have those gummy smiles, how their hair styles have changed and how there are also reminders of where we lived at the time, and how they include family members no longer with us, but who still hold a wonderful warmth in our heart. We had school photos yesterday and as I watched the classes, individuals and families being photographed, I began to wonder what memories our children will have flood to their minds when they look back on these photos in the years to come. It is my hope that they will have experiences that bring a sense of warmth and fondness and that we are doing all we can as a school family and home families to build those memories. I had a meeting this week with a group of students and an architect to help gain the students’ perspective on things to consider in our Master Plan for the next 5 to 10 years. As we sat around the table and the children shared about what they liked, didn’t like and would like to see, I was so blessed to hear their reflections on school life and the things they remembered and it struck me again how vital it is we lay these experience and memory foundations for our children. When the difficulties and storms on life come their way, it is these foundations that stand them in good stead emotionally and spiritually. This coming Saturday night we have our Quiz Night and Silent Auction run by our Community Events Committee. I invite you to come along and enjoy an evening of fun and togetherness and at the same time contribute to funds to help develop a new playground. Have a great week with your kids, Mark B schoolfocus | 3 ADMIN STUFF Yesterday we had the lovely staff of Advancedlife Photography take our school photos. Students did themselves and their college proud and had a blast doing it! It was so encouraging to see our young people progress throughout rehearsals and to witness their confidence flourish after each performance. Manuela Akot acted as the evening’s emcee and did a spectacular job introducing each item and keeping the evening flowing. We showcased the Prescott College Choir singing in harmonics and accompanied by an instrumental band. Students performed several special items, including a piano recital, singing, and poetry recitals. The Year 9 drama class performed a creative expression piece and a reader’s theatre. The Year 10 drama class performed a comedy entitled ‘Romeo To Go’. A big thank you to our Prescott community for supporting this night and we look forward to more productions to come in the future! Mrs Jodie Ronca, Drama Teacher Prescott College schoolfocus | 5 CHAPLAIN’S CORNER LOVE WINS Go back 24 years to the ’92 Olympics. I was 2 years old. Barely old enough to walk, talk and crawl. Yet something happened in that Olympics that the world has continued to remember. No, it didn’t happen in the pool- where most Australians place their attention. And it didn’t happen on the Basketball court- where my natural inclination hits. Instead it happened on the running track. the line. A standing ovation, clapping and cheering was witnessed on that day as Derek and Father, Jim, finished the race. Since that time, world records have been broken, new achievements have been made, and new heroes of every sport have emerged, yet it is still the story of a father and son who Derek Redmond, a British 400m runner, was lined up finished last, that captures our attention. Why? Let in the starting blocks of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic me suggest that it’s because inside each of us, we Games. He was the current British record holder for know that the true spirit and heart of humanity is not the 400 metre sprint, and had won gold in the 4x400 in how much we win, how fast we move or how far metre relay at the World Championships, European we go, but in how much we care. So that in that Championships and Commonwealth Games. Now moment, as we look back at a situation such as this, here he was, his chance to make an Olympic gold we can’t help but find ourselves standing with the medal part of his tally. 65,000 other spectators at that game, watching as love wins. As the race began, Redmond hit the track in fine form. It looked as though he could do it. Then a As a Christian, it’s not too difficult to see another crack. Pain shot up the back of his leg. Redmond had the line, I am reminded of another Father who does pulled a Hamstring and it now looked set to be the the same for all of us. A Father who runs alongside end of the race for him. However, lifting his head, us, cheering us on, lifting us up, and bringing us up Redmond said “no”. Rising from his slumped and over the finish line of life. As the Bible puts it, position, Redmond lifted his body and continued to “LOOK! What great manner of love the Father has for stagger around the track. Breaking from track us, that we should be called His children.” 1 John 3:1 security, his father joined his side running along the outside of the track calling encouragement. May you have a great week this week, knowing that However, as Redmond continued to move around no matter who your earthly Father is, that you have the track, looking up he saw the other competitors a Heavenly Father who is running with you on this already over the line. His heart sank, and again he track of life. sunk to the ground. At this point, his father broke the track boundary and took his son under the arm God bless, and hobbled with him the rest of the way and over Miss R The Year 6’s, with Mrs Stackelroth, made up 5 plays that they had taken from children’s books, and presented them to the Year 1’s and 2’s in the Church Hall.
