Summer 2016 Kids Connection registration will
open Monday, April 4, 2016.
All registrations will be done online using FeePay, an online
software program that allows parents to register, schedule, and
pay for Kids Connection online. Families need to have an
account set up on FeePay. This can be done by going to
https://johnston.ce.feepay.com.
There will be an informational meeting on Tuesday, May 3 at
6:15 p.m. in the Horizon Elementary cafeteria for parents
of incoming kindergartners to learn more about the summer
program and FeePay.

Children entering or eligible to enter kindergarten in the fall of 2016 will
learn about all aspects of safety; fire, poison, strangers, traffic, home, cars,

Mad Science Big Jump Start (Gr. PreK-K)
Campers must have had one year of pre-school or be entering
Kindergarten. Classes will be fun, entertaining, hands-on, and interactive.
Topics include: All about H2O, Ears & Listening, Eyes & Sight, Energy &
Motion, Outer Space Frontier, Shapes & Structures, Tactile Discoveries,
Visible Light Spectrum, and Wacky Weather. Max. 14 participants.
Cupcake Addict Kids Hour (Ages 6-10)
Want to take your kids to a fun and safe environment where they can
be creative, run, jump, and dance? Here is the place! Join us at Cupcake
Addict’s party room (8705 Chambery in Johnston) once a week for a mini
adventure, including something expressive and creative, a game, and a

use clay to make caterpillars, snails, slugs, spiders, butterflies, gnomes,
flower pots, and more! In Sweet Treats with Wayne Thiebaud, study
Thiebaud’s work and learn to make your own 3D desserts like cupcakes,
pies, doughnuts, and ice cream. Or, take Clay Toys and make a variety of
toys out of real clay, including Animal Water-Squirters, Rockin’ Aliens,
Crazy Calendars, and Finger Puppets. All class projects will be fired in a
kiln and the instructor will email parents with a pick-up date. All tools

In this summer camp, students will build multiple projects and use
those projects to investigate basic engineering concepts. Students will be
challenged to adjust, test, modify, and test their projects again. Challenges
include: marshmallow toss, Mad Top, fastest LEGO car, Land Yacht, and
tallest tower. The pace is fast and the atmosphere is fun.

Launch and watch your very own rocket speed 300 feet into the air!
Students will make and take home multiple rockets of varying difficulty
throughout this session. Use rockets and airplanes to investigate basic
aeronautical concepts, including propulsion, thrust, lift, drag, and more.

Show Choir (Gr. 1-9)
Whether you’re trying show choir for the first time or looking to polish
your skills, plan for a super fun week! Students will develop skills in vocal
technique, choreography, facial expression, and projection. Workshop fee
includes the cost of music, hired professional choreographers, hired vocal
instructors, a camp t-shirt, and a snack each day. Max. 110 students for
grades 1-6 and max. 60 students per week for grades 7-9. Performances for
family and friends will be held each Thursday at 11 a.m.

Tales from Theatre Camp (Gr. 3-6)
Explore the world of theatre with this camp, designed to introduce kids
to drama by teaching them basic acting and production skills. Learn
techniques such as voice projection and emotion portrayal as well as the
importance of flexibility and teamwork. Scenes will be performed in a
final show for family and friends on Friday, July 1 at 12 p.m. Please bring

Join us for the annual Johnston Summer Flute Choir Workshop and
become a part of our flute family of the Greater Des Moines area! These
five days are filled with flute fundamentals, sight-reading, collaboration,

professional flutist and Johnston alumna, who received her Bachelor’s and

Flute Workshop and Masterclass (All Ages)
This three-day intensive workshop is designed to help students solidify
their fundamental skills, create healthy musical habits, and explore
chamber music. As a group, we will explore workshops such as Musician
Wellness, Golden Sounds, Fit Flutist, Fluid Breathing, and Full-Range
Flutist. Students will learn and prepare duets and perform them in a final
concert. Participants will be involved in all workshops and perform duos.
Performers will have the added experience of performing solos or etudes
that they have prepared for the group and receive one-on-one feedback
from the instructor. The final concert will take place on Friday, July 15
from 5-6 p.m. Max. 6 performers and unlimited participants.

HOW TO REGISTER
Participants need to register for all summer camps and classes according
to the grade level they will be in for the 2016-17 school year.
To register, mail in a registration form to Johnston Community
Education, P.O. Box 10, Johnston, IA; visit the Community Education
Center in person at 6600 NW 62nd Ave.; call the Community
Education office at 515-278-0552; or go online to johnstonCE.org.
FEEPAY
Johnston Community Education has a new online registration system
for all of its programs: FeePay. FeePay allows for convenient online
registration and secure online payments. Families need to create a new
account in FeePay as no information rolled over from the previous
ActiveNet system. Only one account is needed per family for all
programs, including KTC, Preschool, S.A.S., Aquatics, and adult
and youth classes. To set up an account and register for classes, go to
https://johnston.ce.feepay.com.
REGISTRATION DEADLINES
Registration deadlines are most common for sport classes and camps.
Deadlines are set for each camp to help participants reserve a spot. If
you sign up after the deadline, you will not be guaranteed any T-shirt,
water bottle, or other potential gift included in the camp.
CANCELLATIONS
Community Education staff reserve the right to cancel camps and
classes due to insufficient enrollment. If a program is cancelled by
staff, all participants will recevie a full refund. For weather-related

Camp Invention: Build a solar powered cricket, discover the science of slime and squid,
take apart machines and make original prototypes, think on your feet in high-energy
games, design an eco-adventure park, and more!
The camp is for children entering grades 1-6 and will take place at Summit Middle
School, July 11-15 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Register online at campinvention.org. Cost

Youth triathlons are popping up all over the country so why not join the
craze? Introducing the Johnston Triathlon Camp in conjunction with
Iron Works Athletics! If you can swim two lengths of the pool without
stopping, own a bike, and can run or walk a mile, this camp is for you.
Each practice will be different and fun, taught by coaches that understand
the sport. There will be three opportunities for participants to practice
what they have learned in a race-like situation: an on-campus triathlon
with fellow campers (cost included), a 5K in Urbandale on July 4 (cost
included), and an opportunity to compete in a local youth triathlon (cost
not included). All swimming will be done in a pool. Each participant
will receive a camp dry-fit shirt. No class on July 4, instead campers and
immediate family members are eligible to participate in the Urbandale 5K.

JOHNSTON BLAZE
The Johnston Blaze Swim Club engages in a multi-level competition
program with United States Swimming that attempts to provide challenging
yet success-oriented competitive situations for swimmers of all ages and
abilities. Anyone can become a member of the Blaze Team if they have
achieved level three of American Red Cross swim instruction and can swim
25 yards unassisted.

There is a $50 discount for a second swimmer in a session from the same
family and a $75 discount for the family’s third swimmer in the same
session. A minimum of 10 volunteer hours per swimmer are expected
from parents for home meets. Register as early as possible in order to
submit to swim in meets (meet sign-ups begin prior to swim sessions).
Intro to Competitive Swimming (Ages 6-18)
Enroll in the Blaze intro to competitive swimming class and learn about
all four competitive swim strokes, drills, starts, turns, and sport rules.

Johnston Neighborhood Watch Program
Neighborhood Watch is one of the oldest and most effective crime
prevention programs in the country. It brings citizens and neighbors
together to safeguard communities with the goal of preventing crime
before it happens. On any given day, and often without warning, people
are subjected to varying levels of criminal activity taking place directly
within their community. The Johnston Neighborhood Watch Program is
about neighbors helping neighbors. The program partners directly with the
Johnston Police Department, which provides knowledge on how to make
yourself and your community safer. The Johnston Police Department
meets regularly with neighborhood watch groups to answer questions,
discuss current crime trends, and provide training and information on
Crime Prevention, Home Security, and other topics of particular interest.

The Johnston Running Club (JRC) is hosting an
informational meeting on our spring track program
on Wednesday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Johnston
Public Library. For more information, please email

The Johnston Running Club (JRC) is a non-profit organization committed to
promoting the sport of running in our community. Our volunteer staff of
experienced coaches work with area youth through our Johnston Youth Track
and Johnston Youth Cross Country teams.

Soccer Club
Join the fun!
Johnston Soccer Club is a non-profit, professionally managed
organization focusing on developing youth soccer. Based in Johnston,
Iowa, the Johnston Soccer Club is home to over 1,000 recreational
soccer players and partners with Johnston Urbandale Soccer Club
(JUSC) to provide competitive soccer to an additional 400 players.
Fall Registration
Registration for the fall season is opening soon. Players do not have to
attend school in the Johnston School District to be eligible to register.

The U4 Little Kix program is designed to introduce younger children to

REFUNDS
Refund requests must be made before the second class is held.
No refunds will be made for trips after the registration deadline.
There will be a $5 administration fee per class on all refunds.
Full fee will be returned if the class is cancelled by JCE staff.

Register in person at the Community Education Center at 6600
NW 62nd Avenue in Johnston. Registration hours are Monday
through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. A drop box is available in
the parking lot to drop off registrations before or after hours.
CANCELLATIONS
JCE staff reserve the right to cancel classes.
Class will be cancelled if there is insufficient enrollment.
